- Hello, I screen recorded this video from Dr. Brian May’s Instagram stories so I could use his teachings and learn the “Bohemian Rhapsody” guitar solo myself. Since, a lot of people missed out on his story, I decided to publish screen - recording of his explanation on CZcams so that everyone can learn the solo from the man himself. In this video he explains how to perform the solo on his iconic/ original “Red special” electric guitar that he constructed with his father. Dr. Brian Harold May is the lead guitarist of the legendary Classic rock band, QUEEN.
Brian Harold May CBE (born 19 July 1947) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and astrophysicist. He is the lead guitarist of the rock band Queen.
May was a co-founder of Queen with lead singer Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor, having previously performed with Taylor in the band Smile, which he had joined while he was at university. Within five years of their formation in 1970 and the recruitment of bass player John Deacon completing the lineup, Queen had become one of the biggest rock bands in the world with the success of the album A Night at the Opera and its single "Bohemian Rhapsody". From the mid-1970s until the early 1990s, Queen were an almost constant presence in the UK charts and played at some of the biggest venues in the world, including giving an acclaimed performance at Live Aid in 1985. As a member of Queen, May became regarded as a virtuoso musician and he was identified with a distinctive sound created through his layered guitar work, often using a home-built electric guitar called the Red Special.[3] May wrote numerous hits for Queen, including "We Will Rock You", "I Want It All", "Fat Bottomed Girls", "Flash", "Hammer to Fall", "Save Me", "Who Wants to Live Forever", "Too Much Love Will Kill You", and "The Show Must Go On".
The Red Special is the electric guitar designed and built by Queen's guitarist Brian May and his father, Harold, when Brian was a teenager in the early 1960s.
Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1970. Their classic line-up was Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals) and John Deacon (bass). Their earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, hard rock and heavy metal, but the band gradually ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works by incorporating further styles, such as arena rock and pop rock.
They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

The fact he's chilling in his boxers. The fact he calls comments notes. This guy is my hero.
@@Adam_Barrett a moving sofa arm????
And 'Snap on, snap off'. Very sweet.
omg he is chilling in comfortable clothes.... :OOOOO No way man
Dad showing you the song he wrote vibes
And my Hero too ♥️
For those who remember the 70’s, it’s an other-worldly experience to have one of the greatest guitarists of all time pop up on your handheld device and give you a guitar lesson for one of the greatest songs of all time.
He fitted Queen perfectly and has his own unique sound, but one of the greatest of all time is a bit of a stretch isn`t it?
@@JamoZNL agree. We know Mr. Jimmy Page deserves that all on his own.
@@Linkmarine777
I disagree. He was very influential and important to the band with a huge deal in their succes, but a great guitarist? Meh, he wrote some incredible songs but technically he was mediocre and usually too wasted to even play normally just like Hendrix.
It`s hard to say who`s the greatest but i`d rank Shawn Lane and Buckethead easily in the top 5 for both song writing and technical skills. Maybe throw Van Halen in there together with Malmsteen and i`d still have one very hard to fill spot with so many great players out there....
CPolishing is right. I’m not a huge Queen fan but I recognize Brian May as a living legend. I would definitely rank him as “one of the greatest guitarists of all time”. Not top 5 and probably not top 10, but recognizably great none the less. Newer players like Buckethead, Petrucci and HermanLi are technically impressive but they aren’t inspiring new players to the level that May, Page, Clapton, Nugent, Hendrix, Blackmore, Gibbons or Slash have. We’re not claiming any of their ranking, rather simply that May is a guitarist worth recognizing out of the history of everyone that’s ever picked up a guitar.
@Leafs20XXChamps
"Oh man, someone doesn't share my opinion..let's insult him"
The legend himself taught us how to do that in Bohemian Rhapsody. It feels unreal
One of the many benefits of You Tube. I was around when there was no You Tube.
This teacher is great. He should do a Queen tribute band.
plz be joking

@@anthonyjohn3445 what do u mean then?

@@vinelegendz3125 yes, I'm aware that it's Brian May. It's a joke

How generous to show it slowly ! The master himself, this is our youth's dream became reality.
@@thomasjones5537 Well, music is a very important part of my full and happy life, Thomas...
You can see many people agreeing with my comment... Internet changed everything - those of us who grew-up without it can fullly appreciate all the precious information that is now at our fingertips !
Yesss
Very cool 😎 the best
For decades, I have been trying to unravel these notes in my head...THANK YOU
I like the way he says “plucking.” My 4-year-old grandson calls a guitar pick a “pluck.”
It’s a pluck-trum lol.
anyone else surprised by his use of “snapping on and off” instead of hammer on and pull offs?
I think I’m going to start using these terms as well!
This is basically a video of a god that comes down to earth to show us humans how to do things.
FYI, his T-shirt says "感謝" meaning "gratitude" in Japanese.
lmao,he really looks like a god
Bapak ko
No it isnt
@@bp6837 Calm down mam
the licks starting at 1:17 so interesting how he chose to end it by pre-bending the string at 1:20 and again at 1:26. So accurately I would never have guessed it without seeing it. Precise pitch too.
I love that he's explaining hammer-ons and pull-offs, just in case anyone that's not a guitarist wants to learn the solo. Just genuine
Massive dad vibes right here.
For some reason i got teary eyed at the end here, Brian May himself just walking you, hand in hand, (and laughing and pointing out intricacies in it as well) through one of the most sensual solos. One of the best in pop music at least
Like watching DiVinci paint. What a gift!
We are so blessed to still have him here with us doing such a simple thing that is beyond the word cool😎 Thank you so much for sharing that with us please give us some more. PLEASE
Such a wonderful human.
This might be my new favourite video on CZcams.
absolute legend and very underated guitarist. His vibrato is sublime.
He's my fave guitarist however he's not underrated
It's difficult for me to imagine a world without this man
Wow Brian May himself teaching his solo!!! It's amazing man!!! God bless you!!!!
Brian May playing in his underwear should be a channel
If this man keeps on practising & getting famous he can soon afford some trousers. I wish him all the best.
Absolute legend, incredible guitarist, all round great guy and he loves his hogs too 🦔. You the man, Brian.
Ooohh my Brian ♥️♥️♥️ kisses from Spain Brian. QUEEN FOR EVER
Very kind of you, thanks Dr May. You are a scholar and a gentleman.
Love you Brian
I was about 9 when I started hearing the early music. I always wanted to play like this and when I was about fourteen I picked up the guitar listening to this music. These lead solos we're in the background of my mind throughout the early 70s. Eventually I learned how to play and how to do pull-ons and pull-offs and all the fancy stuff. I really appreciate you coming onto CZcams and sharing your talents far as I'm concerned you made the way for people like me to come and play the guitar. This was the sound that I was trying to emulate
Amazing. Thank you pops!
What a legend, thank you!
True passion in Brian mays guitar playing. 🎸🎼🎸
That's DOCTOR BRIAN MAY. This brilliant man deserves all the accolades, scientific and musical, that he has achieved.
A tremendously talented guitar player but more importantly a wonderful person. Saw you and many other great Rock Bands in the 70's. Queen was one of the best live performance of them all. Thanks so much 🙏
Amazing band queen fredy brian roger john
It’s A Kind Of Magic! Thank you Prof. Brian May!

His smile has always been awesome.
never heart and seen any greater, superb and sympathic man in public- and a guitar hero playing his own built instrument and by the way nebst musical carrier getting a academic title. much respect dr. may
What a cool guy!
the fact that he showed us how wrong he was and didn't rewrite the record touches me. that's why I fell in love with him, for humanity

He is not gonna see this comment btw if ur wondering
Also nah. While he is near the top, he isn't the greatest. That would probably be Jimi Hendrix or van halen or ray vaughan or even jimmy page

The one and only Brian May.
Thanks grandpa the legends... love you
Very electrifying! Thank you. I still recall in my memory January 1976. Bohemian Rhapsody was number one in the charts! I hit six years of age! I lived for music since I was four! Now I am happy as a 52 year old to enjoy music even more than ever!
It was #1 for such a long time, and they started clipping it short on TOTP, because it took up half the show (seemed like). Never got bored with it though, unlike some, Mull of Kintyre anyone? Or, I am Sailing?
Thank you for the lesson !
Thanks Mr Brian
Thank you so very much for all my teacher ,!!!
What a great blessing. Like he had us over for a bite and sat down in the floor and said the staggering word "So can I show you how to play Rhapsody??", as I pick my jaw off the floor. Lol. He's got a right to be among the most arrogant people on the planet but he's got such kindness in his voice. This was very warming to watch. Thank you for posting.
Brian May, vc é o cara!
Awesome that he did this. I’m sure there’s a trillion perfect tabs for this song, but other times tabs get botched and it’s great to have a direct source.
Awesome!
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Dr May for showing me how to play this
Impresive Brian, thx for your time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As great a guitar solo ever created!

Hey Mr. May, you are the Man. I've been wondering around the fretboard 30 years to work that out. To hear it from the horses mouth, sorry horses, 😂. Amazing. I'm only sending this to acknowledge my connection with the universe, you were part of. Thanks Bri
God bless you thanks 😊
Thank You - 🤘QUEEN! 👑

Hammer on. pull offs and trills are the words he meant to use.
Cleanest guitar player, ever.
He's great he should join a band
Bruh he is the Queen guitarist
I don’t play guitar but he makes me want to, Legend Dr B
Wonderful. I had no idea 🤷🏾♂️ the notes on the higer octave were bent to tune (perfectly) instead of fretted. Thank you 😊👍🏿
Thank you
Thank you Brian! you brought inspiration, I'm gonna go dust off my guitar and play.
That had all my attention
This reminded me of the way Star Spangled Banner gets played at sports events.
Thanks for all your musical genius Brian - nicely played.
Hammer-ons and Pull-offs are now called Snapping-ons and Snapping-offs.
