This is the official music from the movie titled "Fire and sword". The film was based on a novel written in 1884 by the famous Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz. "With Fire and Sword" is the first part of the trilogy. The others are: "Potop" and "Pan Wołodyjowski". All these parts tell about the ancient history of Poland. Henryk Sienkiewicz received the Nobel Prize in Literature. The song for the film "With Fire and Sword" is sung by famous Polish singers: Mieczysław Szczesniak and Edyda Górniak, who took second place in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Ask the wise forests about me
    And set me free

    Ask the wildflowers about me

    Ask those fragrant bents

I know no sleep anymore, measuring off the steppe

How am I supposed to ask the Cossack?

'With Fire and Sword' is a great movie. Basically a story of lovers separated and trying to find one another in a country ravaged by a civil war. You should watch it for sure It has two versions: cinematic (shorter) and miniseries (longer and significantly better - especially the character of Helena, the woman from the song, is better developed there). The movie is from 1999, and the book it is based on is from 1884, so it might be a little old-fashioned, but still a great watch.

I was 14 when reading the novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz in Polish (With the Fire and Sword) and it was just a stunning experience for a teenager. It was much better than a film. The very language style was a discovery for me. The author succesfully recreated the Polish language of the 17th century with all the archaisms, borrowings from Latin, mixing dialogues with Ruthenian language. And the amazing plot set in the Commonwealth of Two Nations (correctly Three Nations: Poland, Ruthenia and Lithuania) - a romance and adventure in the fire of the Kossacks War called the Chmielnicki's Uprising which was in fact the Civil War.

Dear Lady - go ahead! A sensitive person must cry when presented with music, words and images of pure love, without... vulgarity and ugliness.
As another Polish poet and musician sings: "Tears are a sign that the heart is beating, and there is no shame in that."
    Greetings to you from Poland.

The film is not that old, but the latest from Sienkiewicz's triptych (the author of the novel). If you would like to watch them, do so in the reverse order to the order in which the films were shot. First, "With Fire and Sword", "The Deluge" and "Pan Wołodyjowski". The latter has aged quite a bit, but is still worth watching.

The film tells the story of the Chmielnicki Uprising, a conflict between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Cossacks who lived in the areas that today belong to Ukraine, then within the borders of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Even though Ukrainians are trying to build their identity on this, I am not convinced whether 17th century Cossacks can be called Ukrainians.

    • @elzbietabetlej4085
      @elzbietabetlej4085 Před 4 měsíci

@@piotr818 they certainly can be called like that. they lived in eastern lands of today's Ukraine and they actually were very versed warrior cast of local community . They often raided Tatars who in turn raided them back, therefore there were so many conflicts with Crimean Khanate. This conflict with Poland nobility also raised Ukrainian nationality awareness and a want to be independent or at least being treated equally to Poles and Lithuanians.

    • @piotr818
      @piotr818 Před 4 měsíci +1

@@elzbietabetlej4085 It's not so simple. The Chmielnicki Uprising, like several previous unsuccessful Cossack uprisings, was not so much a national but a peasant uprising against the magnate families who controlled huge areas of land and tried to control the local population, reducing them to the role of serfs.
The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, waging numerous wars with its neighbors, used the services of Cossacks as soldiers and kept a register for this purpose. The problem was what to do with these people in peacetime. They did not want to work as peasants, and there was no money to pay everyone permanently, so not all those willing were included in the register. King Władysław IV, mentioned in the film, planned a war with Turkey, which did not happen.

One of the best Polish movies IMO :) One of a trilogy - "Sir Wolodyjowski", "The Deluge" and this is "With fire and sword". All 3 are monumental and epic. Together these 3 movies stand as amazing adaptation of one of Polish classic novels written by H. Sienkiewicz. "Sir Wolodyjowski", "The Deluge" and "With Fire and Sword" are epic stories about wars of 17th century Poland - showing a culture or knightly honor, glory, bravery and betrayal.
My translation of this song :
    O my falcon cloudy-eyed,
    Ask about me mountains high,
    Ask about me wisdom forests,
    And set me free
    O my crystal falcon sheer,
    Ask about me nimble streams,
Ask about me flowers of fields
    And set me free,
    My beloved…
How m I to ask heavenly stars ?
They are jealous of your dowery
    Four coffers of love
    And of kindliness of yours,
    My beloved..
How to ask the other ladies ?
They will find my own heart in yours,
Although they know they'd not tell me,
I would not find you there,
    O my falcon thunderer,
    Ask about me fabled steppes,
    Ask these fragrant herbal weeds,
    And set me free,
    Across kurgans burned to ashes,
    Across hamlets all on fires,
    I dont know sleep anymore
    measuring steppes
    to find you,
    My beloved,
How am I to ask the Moon,
He is falling for your orbs,
    He’ll chase off the Sun
    Veiling the steppes,
    I would not find you,
    My beloved…
How am I to ask the Cossak?
Who went down with sickly love,
He would scorch the world from grief,
    If he lost you,
    Me…
    If I lost you…
How am I to ask the Moon,
He is falling for your orbs,
    He’ll chase off the Sun
    Veiling the steppes,
You would not find me, no!
We, the staring, we the listening,
    So presently to the limits,
    In the darkness of Cinema
    Wipe away our tears,
    secretly.

There is another film, both based on the novel by the great Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz. Together he wrote 17 volumes. Although there is no "Dumka na dwa 'serca" there, there is a similar story of great love between Colonel Kmicic and Oleńka Billewiczówna from the Billewicz family. The title of the film sounds similar to the title of the book, i.e. "The Deluge".
