Norcold sells a COLD weather kit that automatically will overcome this problem, getting ready to look into it myself
as ours stopped working for 5 days in 15 degree weather.

Empty the freezer into that cooler, or any box and put it outside! (If the highs are below 20)

I like your first recommendation (said in jest), drive south. We're wintering over in Yuma, AZ now. We never even had to put on a sweater this year.

If you're out in 20 degree temps, find a safe way to put your food either in your vehicle or in a protected space (bear box, etc.) and keep it frozen that way. You can always bring it back in during the day if the daytime temps are going to get above freezing.

Hmmm, we DID come south! And it was freaking colder here in Dublin/Comanche than it was at home in Ohio! It was to cold outside for the LP burner to heat the ammonia mixture. Doing what the manufacturer did not recommend, I blocked the wind from blowing into the exterior vent cover blocking off 90% of it, then used a halogen bulb in a trouble light to help the LP burner heat up the boiler! But the whole frige/freezer got to the same temp as it was in the camper. Thank goodness we had our Iceco with us and had electric hookup at the COE campground! We kept the meat we had just bought at Thompson's from thawing. Hearing coyotes at night, I wasn't about to set up a buffet outside for them! Not to mention the half dozen feral cats that made their rounds everyday!

In the south, it's to hot to camp. Humidity, no campfire, sweating. Naaaa, spring, fall, and winter are the best camping times.

Home study course, lesson 1.6 Resistance creates heat. For example IF the furnace fan motor is dragging (dirty, dry or worn out) will that resistance act like a kinked water hose and cause heat? I think that situation something the average person would not think of unless it would be a screeching sound. First trip out in a new camper my furnace motor was froze tight. Yes it did work at the pre purchase walk thru inspection. Stuff happens.

Thanks again Todd for a great tech tip but we live in Eastern Idaho and when it gets below Zero my fridge just stopped working altogether so what I did was introduce heat in the back of it with one of those small heater units and set it on a thermostat and cut half my vents off with cardboard and believe it or not it started to work again after about 1 and half days. And there's your tech tip. Lol, I always wanted to say that but you say it so much better.

Hey Todd, Thank you for all these FREE tips. 1 Question though, is this the same for 12v fridge or do they follow the residential style?

As Todd stated, this is for ABSORBTION style fridges not compressor style.

We are currently in New Hampshire and it's 23 degrees. We can't pull up and head south as the Wife is a travel nurse and her assignment is here until the first week of April. Our 2003 coach has a 20 year old Dometic NDR1292 side by side absorption fridge that runs like a charm. What works for us in these temps is a small, low volume personal heater that fits in the outside lower compartment behind the unit. There is an electrical outlet there for the fridge to plug into and an open outlet that lets me plug a small fan for airflow when temps are freakin hot, or the heater when freakin cold. The heater helps keep the outside ambient temp around the cooling unit warmer without the need to partially seal off the air grates. Our unit also has 2 mini switches inside the fridge door mounted at the very top. One for "climate control" and the other for "low ambient temp". Both on during these cold spells along with the heater. This combo works for us and the ice cream does stay solid (although currently we're more into the hot chocolate as one would expect).

Holy moly, 23 degrees! We can not complain. Just left Joshua Tree because it was getting in the mid 40s. We are traveling to warmer areas...

Good video Todd. We have an old style in motorhome, but had a 12v in TT. I think we will miss it!

We have used chunks of dry ice both in summer ( in order to travel with propane off) and winter to keep the freezer food frozen.

Makes perfect sense buddy. Mine hasnt done this yet even in 22f. Mine though froze up 1x dont know why but the thermostat doesnt really change in temp when moved. Maybe 5 degrees. Very odd to me

I spent the entire last summer in Alaska, with our fridge and freezer, freezing food.

Very interesting...if it's 20 degrees outside, I'm not camping, but if I am, I'm keeping my freezer items outside the rig!

We have a Norcold refrigerator in our Arctic Fox that has a “cold weather kit” installed, what exactly is it and how does it work? We’ve always had problems with our refrigerator not cooling properly so we travel with an ice chest in case it decides to stop working.

keeps the refrigerant mixture from gelling up. basically thermostat controlled heating blankets

    • @randallyxe1482
      @randallyxe1482 Před 4 měsíci

The kit heats a small portion of the tubing on the back of the fridge via a small 12v heating element to prevent the solution inside from gelling. The heater is thermistatically controlled and should only come on at freezing temps. This will increase somewhat your 12 power draw. The kit WILL NOT address the 1 thermostat issue this video is speaking about.
