There are loads of tactics involved in it, whether it’s the runners taking up positions around the crowd of people ready to grab the ball and run if it breaks free, or which direction the main members of the hug (playing crowd) will go through the streets to get the ball to the goal as quick as possible

its such a good tradition as it gets every local out with the others and in all sorts of spots around the local area, it kind of brings everyone together! imagine being down the pub with a pint and some guy comes up to say he scrapped with you over the ball in the brook and you both can laugh it off! no event quite like it.
This sort of reminds me of when we used to play British Bulldog at school before the days of health and safety and we used to jump on each other and everyone would pile in.
Great days ( at school in the early 70s)
In the 80s, we used to play Murder Ball in PE, despite it being banned by the council. A gym mat at each end of the gym; a medicine ball in the middle; the class split into two teams; the *ONLY* rule was that you scored by getting the ball on the opposing team's mat.
We were still playing bulldog at our school in the early 2010s. We were lucky to have a large field and teachers who didn't give a shit so as long as you didn't start fighting.

thats because a lot of americans arent american at all, despite their legal status. There are many unamerican cabals within american society that make things like this impossible. Most immediate example that comes to mind are the various fairs and carnivals in southern california where, unsurprisingly, opposing gangs run into each other and ensues in violence. These people have no reverence for the setting, a place for families to have fun, and a lot of the time innocent people will be killed for getting caught in their crossfire.

William Shepherd why the hell this clusterfuck of a game is allowed is beyond me. It literally trashes the town, they have to board up buildings so they don’t get destroyed and people will _always_, inevitably, get hurt. When you have thousands of men running around town in flocks tackling and climbing over each other to put a ball in a goal miles away, injury is unavoidable. Each ball is designed for the person throwing it up and hand painted. The paint wears of quickly though and soon becomes a large brown leather ball. On occasion, ‘duplicate ball’ have appeared but players can feel the difference so they are soon discarded.
