Trains, French wines, squid dish cooked in the squid black ink and eaten in the Basque Country. You cannot get any better than that. I did not know that the French Seat of Governance was moved to Bordeaux in 1870, 1914, and 1940. The Germans and the French have such a close relationship. At least in 1870s the Prussian Army overthrew Napoleon III, weakened the French Royalists, and gave the French Republicans a chance to reestablish the Republic. Thanks Miguel Portillo-Bly.
You can never go wrong with travel, wine and confectionery. And if it's in the old world then it's really breathtaking. Miguel as usual is the perfect guide.
11:16 Baillardran - I appreciate how you highlight the local shops. These cakes look delicious!! I hope this shop receives increased patronage as a result of this BBC video. Good Stuff!! (From Iowa - USA)
To me Bordeaux is the best of all French towns (after Straßburg), with good food and enough alcohol for alhoholcs, with enough French decadence but not too much, far away from Paris, and it's location next to ocean. - Greetings, Heinz
I would like to make a correction; ETA was not a revolutionary group, but a terrorist group who engaged in a violent campaign of bombings, assassinations, and kidnappings in the Basque Country and throughout the rest of Spain. Between 1968 and 2010 ETA killed 829 people, including 340 civilians, and injuring thousands more. Wonderful journey, like always.
@@CityWhisperer They weren't very brave either, once they started getting some of their own medicine, their 'revolutionari' stamina was curved rather quickly also.
@@vicnzvitis The reason why the group was formed was to fight against Franco. Whatever they did afterwards is debatable, but the roots and the origin of it was the will of the Basque people to fight against the dictator's regime.
Ah, of course Michael could afford to throw his support behind Brexit considering he has a Spanish passport, just in case. It makes perfect sense now haha

True
Beautiful. I did love it. Europe is so so so beautiful.
One of the best corners of Europe. Never tired of Biarritz, San Sebastian and Pays Basque. Thank you :)
Michael, disarming in his approach to everyone, ready to give things a go and risk looking a little foolish but always interesting items and comments.
I find myself, as I get older, enjoying mostly BBC or at least British hosted shows on tv. Must be my British immigrant roots showing...
I´m not british, but I fully agree with you.
When I was younger I really enjoyed Monty Python and Benny Hill ... you know why
@@waltbrown8899: We all know why, Walt :)

Such a great host 💫🚟🚞🚃🛵
I love all of Michael portillo train series , legend
Like watching watching an updated version of Rick Steeves again, on rails.
Except Rick Steeves travels like an alien in a space suit, while Portillo immerses himself in the places and cultures he visits.
Magnificent

It was a revolutionary group, as its roots come from fighting against the oppression of the Franco regime.
@@CityWhisperer Nobody fights 'opression' killing civilians in a market. As well as the IRA, ETA was a band of terrorists.
@@CityWhisperer Most of their killings were not under the Franco regime but after Franco's death under democratic rule. As well as IRA just murderers

I only came here to make this comment ...
If one is wondering who this queen IS, he has a Wikipedia entry. He supported the "Conservatives," so he deserves a right good trashing.
Don't nasty. We love him.
Just what the show needed, a homophobic comment.
🤔📺
What about the ancestors of the squid? And cooking the squid in its own ink? No respect for the squid.
Too much information about the Royal family
No
It annoys me when Brexiter Portillo flaunts his Spanish passport.
Portillo brexiteer??? I think you are wrong!
