stellar content, as always Josh, and the cinematography and design are a level apart. Something that I almost take for granted because I've accustomed myself to expecting but is worth mentioning again. I believe it would be more insensitive for simply criticising somebody, and in this case, for having.
Solid headphone. I personally prefer the HE1000SE variant for better resolution and technicalities to my ears, but the V2 has a more enveloping sound. Some V2's can be found for ~$1600 in the used market, vs ~$2,000 for the SE.
Hifiman makes me so nervous with their QC issues. If I'm going to drop $2k on a pair of cans, I want them to last
Thatâs why I own ZMF
Ya itâs return city with them. Even the $500 XS I own Iâm on #4. Amazon understands but not sure other retailers would. Sad đą
I owned the v2, 4k sounds $400 build quality in terms of how solid they are but very comfortable. I also owned thebzmf VC. 2500 sound and 3000 build quality but for me one of the least comfortable headphones I've owned. Now I own the susvara $1500 build quality $5000 sound but I'll take it the less build quality for the sound and awesome comfort. I really want to try the atrium and Warwick bravura, but I think I better not and enjoy the susvara as my final headphone.

@@MAELOB Eikon here :P. Bought it second hand and it hasn't let me down yet. It's awesome on a cheap tube rolled tube amp.
own the v2's and after break-in period they are soo good. absolutely love them.
Great video. I would love to see a review of the HE6 SE v2 some day to see how it competes!
He 6V2: great punch, nice sparkling high end, clear but pleasant mids.
But not very impressive staging.
And very few details. Also a little bit forward in higher mids. In comparison to the V2 1000both worth their price but the V2 1000 is in every area better. Only for electronic music more punch of the He 6V2 is might worth the less details.
I actually have the HE1000 version 1 which does have some annyong trait like the lack of dust cover on the headphone itself and 2.5mm jack. But sound wise, still absolutely love it. The main characteristic of this headphone to me is how relaxing it is to listen to, like you could listen for hours and enjoy some of the best performance in the market without feeling fatigue. The strong bass and mid also make it an excellent choice for movie and even gaming. Bought it second hand for $800, best money I ever spent on audio stuff. Highly recommended!
I brought a V1 for a bit more than that, and I totally agree. It really feels spacious and relaxing as a sound signature, it took a little getting used to compared to the base stuff I was used to from the sony's, but now it is my daily driver, be it working at home or just enjoying something. I had thought about upgrading, but I really don't want to lose what I got right now.
What type of portable audio player would be a good matching?
strong bass ? im wanting a headphone with really strong bass. would you rtecomend over the arya ?
@@TheBobby1kenobi Focal Clear. $800 brand new, will blow your mind with punchy dynamic bass.
I have the v2, and as an owner I'll tell you to keep the v1. It's far better than the v2 esp if you still own the original pads.
Josh this was a very thorough review, great job
Would like to see a comparison between the 1000v2 vs your abyss diana v2 if you can do it.
Thanks for the great review. I have a Ibasso DX320 DAP that powers up the v2 really well in my opinion. I wonder what 4.4mm headphone cable you would recommend? At the moment I do have a Meze PCUHD premium copper cable. In the meantime i also listened to the v2 Stealth. In my opinion it is more refined and laidback in the treble but I prefer the bass on the v2. To me it is more relaxed and layered. Especially when listening to jazz what I do a lot. The soundstage is also wider on the v2 in comparison with the Stealth. Looking forward to your answer. Cheers Fonz
Thank you for the great review. I bought one with the new price and Iâm very happy.but I have a question: can you recommend a cable to substitute the original ones? I think they suckâŠ
Either Periapt or Fog City Cables! BOTH are an EXCELLENT choice for the money; great BANG for the BUCK!
I wonder how would they sound on RebelAmp? it's "only" 1watt but it's class A so you can use all of it, I had pretty good success powering some difficult planars with it
Hey Josh. Iâd like to hear your thoughts on the Singxer SU-6 DDC. Perhaps some comparisons would be great
Hey Josh ! Hope youâre having a lovely day. I was wondering if youâre going to review the new airpods pro ? Hey Josh can you do a video on the ZMF Atrium?? I think it would fit right into your sound preference
My mom bought these and we use a silver dragon 4.4mm balanced cable with an Astell and Kern SR25 MKII player. The detail and soundstage is better than my Focal Stellias.
I am curious the better part on Stellia over the V2. I have V2 with full satisfaction, but considering to add the Stellia for the back close configuration.
â@@waterglass55Did you get the Stellia in the end? Hardly surprising that a planar at this level would offer superior soundstage to a Focal (and I love both my Radiance and my Elear w/ Dekoni pads).
Really tempting, in the past hifiman had issues with reliability but I think hifiman is gettting better about customer service and reliability
I had these for about a year, pretty amazing headphones
Some day I will own a high end planar headphone. Just can't justify over $1k on a headphone yet. I do love my HE500 though. They sound great all these years later. Maybe I'll eventually upgrade to a Arya someday.
He500 is already high end planar headphone. I have both - he-500 and Arya. And I'm going to sell Arya.
My audiophile headphone journey ended with the HE1000 V2. In a word, it is astonishing with the iFi IDSD portable DAC/Amp. I am waiting on delivery of the Hifiman EF400 DAC/Amp and hope it will allow me to be even more impressed. Nice review.
Is this the ifi signature? The one with the bass click?
Hi John, can you please tell your experience with he1000v2 and Gryphon combination. Thanks in advance.
The EF400 is just a horrible amp sorry I just couldn't listen to it's cold clinical small soundstage sound.
@@Jootn2kx I have been listening to the EF-400 for about six months, and my experience is very different than yours, apparently. Joshua I have to ask why no Audio-Technica they have been around for a bit soooooo ?
You are correct that Hifiman stopped these. But great thing is that he1000 stealth magnets came . Waiting for your review on them.

@@Snxgur Anyway, I bought he1000SE.
Previously i was using edition xs. Compared to my previous edition xs, the 8 times expensive he1000SE is not a huge upgrade in sound quality. I really feel the bass in xs is punchier than it is in Hekse. Hekse is better in other aspects, but not worth 8 times the price of xs.
I am getting a feeling that All the reviews are nothing but hot air.
It is now 1180 on Taobao in China. Looks like a real bargain now.
These were release 6 years ago, did they get any silent revisions since then.
Any opinions on Dank Audio Expanse headphones?
For low impedance and low sensitivity headphones you need an amp with high levels of current NOT voltage. This is likely why the high voltage amp sounded bad and this is also why for tubes you would likely need to use a hybrid as OTL tubes are great for voltage but not for current. Usually, current is not advertised on amps so you usually have to look at the wattage it puts out at low impedance to see if it can power them low sensitivity planars.
Adressing a myth: amps are not "tuned". Performance depends on a good match in current delivery for low impedance (AND insentive) HP.
High impedance headphones, 300/600 Ohm need higher voltage to work as designed.
Bad match leads to underdriven, "starved" headphones that sound flat.
Could you do a review of the Sony NW-ZX507 dap?
Around a week ago these had another big drop in price, now the standard price is $1400

Nice review. I had a 1000V2 for 4 years and I loved its huge expansive sound, but I havenât looked back since I upgraded to HEKSE, which to my ears is a faster, more organic sounding, far more detailed set of cans which also has incredible bass. If the V2 was a big room, the SE is a medium room, but thereâs way more going on in the room with the SEâs than the V2âs. Both sets of cans are excellent, it just depends on what size of room you like.
what is the HEKSE?

Just got my Ananda stealth at 500$ brand new. In my testing I would say it beats XS in almost all aspect besides bass respond.
Where'd you get it for $500? That's an amazing price.
Rumble Rumble Its on sale in my local store. XS at $400. Iâd probably get the XS over Ananda v2 if its at $700 tho
Yeah, I can't say enough good things about the Ananda, especially for the price. It's the best under 1k cans I've listened to.
I had the opportunity to try the HE1000v2 along with the Arya. I tried them powered with the Adi2Pro (1.5wpc balanced) and also an Auralic amp. It was the first time I realised that a higher priced product might not necessarily be the 'better'. The Aryas were perfect for the higher energy techno and electronic music I listen to, while the HE1000se turned all the techno I played into polite elevator music.
It was astonishing how much the HE1000se did NOT suit my music and how starkly they contrasted the Aryas. Though the Arays (the OG ones) had atrocious build quality.
Sort of like the HD600's, there's very little that's a direct upgrade for their signature, besides maybe focal clears, and then you go from ultra reliable, hard to find one that doesn't work, to focal's very unreliable driver headphones.
I think thatâs the thing, I own a set of V1âs and itâs resolving and tone is fantastic, but itâs also very laidback and subdued, which is fantastic for my tastes as I can use an amp to get more out of it and it suits my temperament nicely when working from home. I can see how it wouldnât be to everyoneâs taste.đ
Exactly my findings!
At the moment my Arya V2 lies next to a HE1000 V2 and it's NOT a upgrade for me. Foremost they are sounding the same at first and second listen (90%+) but that was to be expected. The Arya V2 is more energetic and a little more forward sounding, where as HE1000V2 is less forward, more laid-back and a little more bass quantity. But strangely the Arya sounds a little more punchy to my ears. Soundstage, imaging, are on par to my ears. Nothing to speak about, any difference here is minor. I think next to my Empyrean, my Arya V2 is the better pair of headphones to go with.
I bought a HE1000se and I love it for classical and certain rock music but admit too on electronic it can be hit and miss (although its great for new-agey sub-bass type electronic music), is it worth it to get an Arya to complement? I was worried getting one might just be a downgrade.
@@mikafoxx2717 I had the same experience with trying to find an HD600 replacement. I ended up getting the Austran Audio x65 instead, 1/4 the price of the clears, and I think they are superiour for my purposes. grerat imaging, more comfortable, almost as much detail as the clears, and a very controlled treble that never gets harsh or peaky for me. The HD600 might still have an edge on midrange, but no can is perfect. I suggest demoing an x65 if you can.
I just returned the he1000v2 and got the Meze Empyrean. The small and delicate hinges really worried me.
Do you have any complaints regarding the Empys?
@@h.hristov for fit and comfort 0. I use the leather pads and still get the clean top end so that part for me is ok. I still use EQ through Roon or APO equalizer because I like more brightness in the sound. The build quality for the Mezes are so good that I think it justifies the cost. I felt like I spend 2k with the HE1000v2 and they put about $20 of that into frame for the headphones. Also the hinge comes with a slight bend so that it will slide over the plastic washer, which makes them look and feel awful.

still waiting for dx3 pro+ vs zen dac v2 vs fiio k5 pro
My wife prefers Arya just because how comfortable those are for her larger (than my) head, regardless what I mumble about it's build quality.
Would you recommend dt 1990 pro or the XS? I am looking for a new headphones. I play games and watch movie a lot. I am really confused of what to get. xd there are so many headphones at the price range of $500 and i am just getting into audiophile. Currently using a hd 58x with fiio k3.
I started with te dt1990 but they started to bother me. They are so bright and sibilant they taught me that I am treble sensitive. Some people like them though, but I sold mine after a few months. But the worst was that you can get used to the signature, even enjoy it, but when you go back to try other headphones everything sounds dark, and I mean dark, muddy, and muffled. That was the real deal breaker. I wish I had started with something like the Sundara instead, but they weren't available in my country.
I have the DT 770 Pro and yes they are bright. Too bright for my liking. It is remedied with a Khadas Tone Board tho. Bought the XS and they are great for EDM; particularly for their bass. I've read that the XS is also great for gaming
If you don't want to destroy your ears by incredibly high trebles then don't buy Beyerdynamic headphones.
Dt 1990 are dogshit headphones. Insane treble peak. Xs is much better
Both are in the same price range. The DT1990 are excellent and very very detailed but you have to listen with EQ. (or get used to the sound) Re durability: they are tough as a rock in the long haul.
the XS are at a much higher technical level. My only worry is build quality. If you treat them softly and can handle stuff such as hinges and headbands and ratchets you are ok.

So different vocals sound different on a different headphones. I think every Audiophile knows that.
I noticed that you didn't mention the Ananda. Is it not a viable option?
It is a very good option. They are great at "space" and "spot on" FR. No EQ needed at all. Perfect. Low power draw, it's not fussy about amps. They were selling at 1000$ not so long ago. Now they are a very worthy alternative to the XS. Some niggles with build quality.

HE6 sev2 and Arya stealth are the go to moves for Hifiman.
I have both and the HE6 SEv2 is a pain to drive to itâs fullest potential. Itâs not just wattage either. I didnât believe the online chatter that it needs a speaker amp to drive properly but I now believe that to be the case. Iâve tried various amps on that thing and they almost always sound like a thin, pale version of the Arya. When I hooked up to the direct drive output of an A100 it came alive. Problem is A100âs are actually terrible amps otherwise for headphones, noise floor is way to high for high end hpâs. Still looking for the proper amp to daily drive the HE6 SEv2. Is the HEKv2 really worth an additional 1K over the Arya Stealth (which I can get for like $1099)?
Yes, at least for the classical music, more refine texture and richness. I chose HEK v2 over Arya SE after the comparison for a month.
I went from owning the hekse to an Arya v3, it sounds better to me. You have to experiment by yourself.
@@Baldy1964 The Arya SE sounds too bright, glossy, clinical, and unnatural for me compared to my Sundara.
@@Reeeepicheep You are the living reason why i said, you have to experiment by yourself. Nobody likes the same thing and that's okay. 1. We don't listen to the same music genres. 2. For me, ARYA SE and HEK V2 Stealth complement each other. The first one gives me the sound of being on stage as a musician in the music. The second brings me the music as if I were standing in the large hall as a listener. I prefer to live with the ARYA SE. But having the HEK V2 would be nice too, but doesn't fit every genre. And really think the Stealth Magnet line has taken things up another notch compared to the OG versions. If I was going to recommend a Hifiman HP to someone it would be the Ananda SM or the Arya SM. They do so much of what the more expensive Hifiman HP's do that it's just not worth paying up thousands of dollars more for a 10% sound improvement. I recently sold my HE1000se because of this. The Ananda SM has a great sound signature right out of the box with with a much nicer lower end Bass going on than the OG Ananda. And I also have the HE6se V2 which when amped properly competes with the HEKse and Susvara. And the HE6se V2 actually has a better Bass, Slam and Impact to my ears. And I bought it new for $500 on Adorama. You can achieve acquiring great HP's and audio gear without breaking the bank. I've been down the road of trying the TOTL stuff and realized the minor improvements are just not worth money for my setup. Very Happy being in the mid-fi range audio and headphone tier.
Especially in the wallet
PS- I was not impressed with the HE1000 V2. The HEKse is much better and a detail monster. I'd take the Arya SM and Ananda SM over the HEKV2. But this stuff is all subjective
Ananda Stealth is great, but they aren't that comparable in soundstage and sound characteristics! HE 1000 V2 is more like a slightly warmer, more laid back version of an Arya V2! Ananda Stealth doesn't have this grand stage the Arya (V2) and HE1000V2 possess, is more more intimate and "clearer" in sounding. Perhaps due to stealth magnets.
So, a cheaper version of the 1000 V2 is an Arya V2. "Golden Sound" has a video review of these two in comparison and I have to agree with him.
@@joggometer5393 Yeah it's all subjective and each person will prefer a certain something more. If I was heavily into soundstage I'd have kept my HEKse or probably get the HD 800s over any Hifiman HP. I've found myself recently realizing I'm a bit of a Bass head over a detail and soundstage seeker. I've found a few good all rounder HP's I'm happy with now that do everything pretty well and also have that low end Bass that digs deep that I like. Right now my Headphones are the Rad-0, Auteur Classic, HE6se V2 and the Ananda SM. All of them are different but still deliver what I'm looking for. Come to think of it an HD 800s would probably be a good one to put on the wish list for an altogether different sounding headphone with that soundstage. Good for gaming and movies too which is a bonus of the 800s
@@JTB-- Absolutely, I see what you mean! I've seen for myself that I absolutely need a few pair of headphones in my collection that cater to my different tastes of the day, as well as the genre of music.
So for me at the moment my Arya V2, besides a Meze Empyrean and a Meze Liric does it all, from the analytical, more neutral side with a touch warmth (AryaV2) to an allrounder like the Empyrean which sounds good with almost anything. The Liric for my needs as a great allrounder closed back planar.
I'm more fascinated by planar technology sound wise but we all know Meze does a great hybrid with their propriety planar driver technology between dynamics and planars.
HE1000 V2 is a great headphone, more so if I could have only one. But for me it isn't a upgrade to an Arya (V2), they are nearly identical and the Arya sounds better (more impressive due to its slightly more energetic and forward presentation) for my preferred genres like EDM, acoustic and pop.
Also, I'm not a fan of the cheap untreated leather head band of the 1000V2. It's just a matter of time that it gets dirty and unsightly. That's foreseeable. With the Arya, you don't have to worry about that!
At the end it's all about getting the right emotions with your preferred music, feeling the magic, that's it just right. ***
I just replaced my crappy M1060 v.2 with Drop/Hifiman HE5XX yesterday. I hope I don't regret it when they get here, after a couple days burn in. I'd like at least similar sound quality, if not better. They seem better designed & built anyway. I keep reading the 5XX have pad and cable quality issues after a while so I'll likely be upgrading those, as well as my little Dragonfly Red at some stage - I reckon a used Chord Mojo should do it. I always thought it a huge ripoff that so many of Hifiman's headphones share an almost identical ugly-as-sin square headband as the M1060 - Especially models like the HE1000, Arya and Susvara, for their asking price. Albeit, probably made with better quality materials. Still... Having used the M1060 since around 2016, I very quickly grew to hate it's build quality and I couldn't wait to replace them. I can't believe Monoprice haven't discontinued them.
If you don't have other good headphones to compare, it's gonna blow your mind. The M1060 is not very good. The HE5XX isn't amazing but it's pretty good. MUCH better than M1060. I assure you Hifiman's headbands are builtbetter than Monolith's. They used to have some quality issues but those have largely been solved. The M1060 has an awful floppy headband. These are much better.
@@geeknproud321 Thanks. The only saving grace for the M1060 were their soundstage and the fact you could EQ the bass back up and that 5k ring down.
