The animation of these suits dodging around in space is just so good. But that still shot of the gms just standing and sitting on the ship on it's last legs is still my favorite of this series.
"Remarkable for being unremarkable". That only means that they don't have any outstanding weaknesses. Boring, but practical - and that's what you want in a general-use grunt suit. The scene of Burning's unit exploding is also very interesting, it's just a scratch but you get to see the internal workings of the mobile suit close up before it explodes. Really helps to remind you that these are still giant pieces of machinery, and even a stray bullet can turn one into scrap metal.
You need to rewatch the Burning GM scene again... by all accounts South Burning practically did the impossible just getting into his cockpit as Cima and Gelgoog Marine Custom approached and he immediately neutralized her attack... however Cima is protected by some plot armor...ok okk but her Gelgoog has an arm mounted gattling gun that sprays gunfire so in a way it's a reverse of the scene in Gundam 0080. The gunfire lodged into a sensitive part of Burning's GM Custom... also he was basically the Gandalf or Obi Wan or even Qui Gon Jin character in the sense that he was a veteran ace pilot that despite his injuries was still very dangerous as a pilot... Monsha, Alpha Bate and Adel as well as Chuck Keith and Kou Uraki are supposed to improve enough to survive the conflict. Further.. Kou Uraki is the unlikely "winner" as Gundam 0083 beings, he has a number Five on his helmet for a reason, because he was ranking lower than Keith as a trainee and since he was not placed on court martial for commandeering the Gundam because of plot and because of plot where the regular Monsha ended up messing his chances is why Kou remained a Gundam pilot even thought technically he was not qualified initially for it. Therefore Kou mainly survives due to the power and performance of the Gundam relative to the GMs and Gelgoogs and other MS up to a certain point.
I forgot how good of a track record the GM Custom has in Stardust, IIRC Burning's Unit is the only one lost in the series, Damn nice to see a Federation Grunt unit NOT instantly dying when its stared at.

It could easily keep up the the GP01. (You could also say that it was because the GP01's pilot was a rookie, but still, it could keep up with a Gundam Type.)
Gm custom is based of the Alex gundam arguably the best gundam of the OYW it can definitely keep with the gpo1. If amuro had access to a gm custom char and zeon wouldn't stand a chance
i love Gundam series that focused on regular pilots both Federation and Zeon. The prodigy young pilot was a little to unrealistic for me especially since my husband is a veteran of the SANDF (South African National Defense force) and an infantryman. 08th Shotai,0083 and MS Igloo were both me and my husband’s favorite Mobile suit series. When i asked my husband what his favorite MS were only one Gundam showed up as his favorite the Ground type RX-79(G) the rest were standard infantry GM customs,Zakus,Gouf Custom and Dom Tropen. Shiro Amada and Aina Sakhalin is both me and my husband’s favorite Gundam OVA characters.
0083 Stardust Memories OVA. You should watch it, it's really good. Also, these things are based off the Alex and were originally meant to be the next gen mainstay mobile suit for the Federation, but it got phased out in favor of the cheaper GM Kai. After that, it became an ace machine.
You must not have seen episide 1, 2, 3, 7,8,10,11 or 12. Bate gets his leg shot off, Monsha almost gets kamikaze'd, Adel's unit suffers electrical issues, Burning literally DIED ON CAMERA.... they get their ass KICKED the few times they aren't struggling against the enemy. If you really watch, they very seldom get an "easy kill". That's what makes Stardust Memory so damn good... it's not gundam seed beam spam back flippy pretty hair spike gundams
Love the GM custom and the GM cannon from the Albion. 0083 may suffer from uneven writing, but it's action and animation are a highpoint for the franchise.
I still remember getting a GM Custom 6 inch figure back in the day at a school Christmas gift exchange. I only knew about Gundam Wing, but hadn't watched much, so that figure was essentially my entry into the series. Nowadays I'm much heavier into Gundam, especially the Gunpla hobby, so I hope there is/will be a nice model kit of the Custom I can find one day.
You know, I remember wondering why they suddenly started using bullets for the gm units again when the beam spray gun exists. Maybe they were more cost effective? I've read a lot online where people say the beam spray gun is like a shotgun in range, when in reality it's often depicted as just being a bit weaker than the Gundam beam rifle.
The GM rifle used by this one is new and can easily penetrate the armor of Zeon suits and has more range than the spray gun. The custom has a beam rifle option too.
I wish more Gundam series would treat the EFF veterans like this. I'm not saying they should never lose/get shot down but it feels like even suits like the Commander ReZELs and custom Jegans get jobbed needlessly hard.

In WW2 the better training cycles of the Allies ultimately produced novices who, when paired when a more capable machine, could (and did) go on to take out many of the Axis aces during the European and Pacific air wars. Japan *really* leans into the mythos of untouchable aces who fly until they die-almost solely when the plot demands it- even though the majority of their experienced pilots who weren’t lost to anti-aircraft fire were killed by those same novices. Not a dig at you or any gundam fan, it’s just something that sticks out to me throughout the series.
If 0083 is Top Gun, GM custom would be the F14, the coolest GM ever made, also the most badass and actually wasn't treated like some random grunt suit.
the GM Custom is more or less the Apex of the Design Doctrine to come out of the One Year War for the Federation. on paper, its performance was on par or better than that of the RX-78 Series Baseline Gundams. I only say this came out of the One Year War, because it was built using the same level of tech as mobile suits from that era. The Moveable Frame introduced by the Gundam Mk-II and later, the Zeta Gundam, wouldn't become a thing and a part of mobile suit construction for another four years or so by the point of Stardust.
It was a bit expensive, not good if they wanted a mainstay mobile suit they could use to project power all over the earth sphere and beyond. Also, not all Federation pilots were aces and could bring this thing to its full potential, so we could see scenes where it would be wasted. In the end, they went for the cheaper GM Kai as their mainstay suit and kept the GM Custom as an ace unit.
Too difficult to mass produce, however there is a variant that was masd produced, the RGM-79Q also known as one of the first mobile suits of the Titans
actually, gm custom developped into some more advanced and remarkable mobile suit and the development resulted into Gundam Mark II and mass produced into GM III

Disgusting not the original sound. Really hated when Sunrise got into this mood to redo the sound of these animations. Glad I picked these up on DVD before that happened. I know Cowboy Bebop in the west is VERY hard to find a copy that doesn't have a completely reworked sound, to a point Spike's gun doesn't sound like Spike's gun anymore.

no, GM Custom is developed used NT-1 Alex, GM Command and GM Sniper Custom . while Jegan was developed using combination of Nemo, GM III, and Jedah. so spec-wise, Jegan is WAY Better than GM Custom
The GM Custom VS Gundam battle in 0083 made no sense. Kou should also be in a GM Custom. Monsha and Kou were fighting to see who was the better pilot and most worthy to pilot the gundam. Kou should be piloting a GM Custom. That way both sides are even and its just a battle of skill. Why is he in the Gundam? It makes No sense.

この頃、富野さんのｆ９１が売れなくて、同時期に作られた、スターダストメモリーとポケットの中の戦争っていう、富野さんが関わらなかった作品が評価されたっていう、結構皮肉な時代だったんだよね。
富野さん的には、もう時代遅れとして扱われて、相当きつかったみたいだけど、ガンダムって富野さんが関わってない方が売れちゃうんだよな。

セリフやら効果音の撮り直しをしてます(旧音源はセリフを単独録音した原版が無かったとかなんだとか)
DVDBOXで追加された5.1ch版。同時期に出た08小隊のDVDBOXもこの音声改悪を食らってる。
当然購入者からは不評の嵐。
