  • Quick run down on this specific Mercedes SL500 convertible roof problem. In this video, we discover a different reason why the convertible top isn't operating properly. I mention that there might be a part two to explain the remedy, but there will not be. The lubrication of the hooks on the front of the roof panel assisted in the smooth operation, but it was then discovered, that the heat is causing the hydraulic motor to overheat, and not operate. If I park it in the shade, it operates fine almost every time. I believe, that the hydraulic motor, is just old and tired, and needs replacement. Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed the video or it helped you out. Also, as always, feel free to leave a comment. - Sponge

The actual problem was a low convenience battery, that’s why it said it convenience temporary unavailable, the reason it started running again was because it was running while you were messing with it and the rear battery got enough power

It might be that it had an airlock in the system so by keep opening and closing it was bleeding the air out

That video was perfect. My 2006 had the same issue and now it’s fixed with a little bit of grease separate question. Any idea how to reset the maintenance required or service required message on the dash again thanks so much!

Hi Warren. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, that I hadn't updated everyone. After countless hours over about 4 days, in the end, I found out that it works when the vehicle, or specifically the trunk, is not hot. If the car is parked in the shade, it works. If it is parked out in the sunlight, even more, on a hot day, it won't work. All the cleaning and greasing that I did, did help assist it in operating more consistently. Unfortunately, in the end, I believe the culprit is the hydraulic motor. It's just tired. And if it's hot, it doesn't have enough power to release the clamps at the top of the windshield. Kinda like if you operate it over and over again, the pump gets hot, and stops until it cools. You can try and test yours the way I did, after finishing the video. Leave it parked in the shade, or someplace cool. See if it works. Then, go park it out in the direct sunlight on a hot day, see if it doesn't. Then alternate a few times allowing time in-between to let the pump come to temp. I believe the remedy in my case, is going to be a brand new pump. Let me know what you come up with. - Sponge

@@spongestechtips-xu1xg Check the oil level on the hydraulic pump used to actuate the top. I believe the pump is located in the trunk next to the spare tire on the drivers side. There should be a sight glass with a Min and Max level shown. The oil level should be in the center. If it's low, then there's a leak somewhere. Many times the leak is the seal on the hydraulic cylinder that locks/unlocks the top (the same thing you were doing manually with the hex wrench). Just a thought.

If you have to open the trunk manually, like you showed, and your door locks don't work, the likely problem is the pneumatic pump. It is located below the hydraulic pump in the trunk. Also, quite likely the fuse to the pneumatic pump is blown and will instantly blow new fuses till the problem is solved. Check the fuses behind the passenger seat. There are several good CZcams videos that show how to do this and repair the pneumatic pump.

Thanks for your comment. All the fuses behind the passenger seat are good. The door locks work, but only if you put the key next to the little light detector, and bush the button in the key fab. If you are anywhere away from immediately next to that light detector, the fab button will not operate the lock or unlock feature. Also, the trunk release switch on the door, does not unlock the truck. As for the pneumatic pump, I'll look into tha on my own time, just out of curiositt. Because of the amount of hours we have into the roof, my clients do not want to address any of the other quirks at this time. Thanks so much for the information. - Sponge

Actually..those features operate off the secondary or convenience battery located in the trunk. If the car sits it discharges. You need to charge it..a noco genius battery charger will do it. I do have a 2006 500SL.

I appreciate your question, and wish I had an answer. Unfortunately, without having eyes and hands on it, it's very difficult to address a problem. Especially on these SL's, as they seem to be basket cases of problems as they get older, and their mileage gets up there. I'll keep my eyes peeled for one with a similar issue. If so, I will for sure post a tech tip video. In the meantime, maybe another viewer or commenter can help. Thanks for watching. - Sponge

Reached out to a company who works on Convertible Tops in Dallas where i live. Response: "You probably have a leak in one of your cylinders. I believe you have 9 of them. So until you can get that fixed try closing the top by filling the pump up completely with fluid. Now it will leak out but this is the only way to get the top to close until you get the cylinder or cylinders fixed. Be sure to use CHF11S fluid, you can get it at auto zone." Update: I tried it this morning and it was a success! Trunk and top is closed. I will keep it closed until I do the repair. Hope this helps you guys.

Your cargo cover needs to be manually moved into the down position. If you have done that, and it still says that it is not closed, then it is probably a faulty sensor that is activated when it's in the down position. Check that. If you scroll through my videos, you will find a video on a Volkswagen EOS, that had that problem. It should probably help since it is similar. Thanks for watching. - Sponge

Hi. So sadly, the place I do contract work with, did not want to make the investment in the new pump, and the labor. So they dropped the price a bit, and sold it as-is to a customer that wasn't concerned with the operation. We live in a state up here, that doesn't have a huge convertible season, so a lot of people buy them, and never take the top down. My hope, is , that down the road, the new owner, decides they want to fix the problem, and they return for the repair. If they do, I will for sure do a tech tip son that and a follow up. Thanks for watching. - Sponge

Your battery was low. After you let it run for a while it charged up enough to operate the latch. Check your battery in the trunk.

Sticky micro switch on the front lock mech, snip off the rubber cover on the switch contact to confirm, the rubber hardens and stops the switch contacting for full locked or unlocked
