Had the Steelers beaten San Diego the year before I think they would have won against the 49ers. Young didn't fare well against pressure and Pittsburgh could generate hellacious pressure with just Green and Lloyd! Plus, the Chargers seemed happy with just being there while Pittsburgh would have wanted to beat the 49ers to their 5th Lombardi trophy!

I was a senior in high school during this game. Never been a particular fan of the Steelers but was rooting for ANY AFC team to win at that point. The set-up for a Steelers win in the 4th Quarter was beautiful, almost poetic, and then...nope. My jaw just dropped when Neil O threw the ball right to Larry Brown. The Braves, Cowboys, and Bulls were three teams that you just knew, if they got to their respective championship rounds, were not going to be denied. Many people don't remember this, but Kevin Greene was trash talking the Cowboys o-line after the game about them not being able to run the ball during the game. "Look at the scoreboard, Hulk," was their response.
We all know that Pittsburgh has beaten Dallas 2 out of 3 times in the Super Bowl. And they were all outstanding games. But despite success against Dallas from Super Bowl's: X & XIII, the Super Bowl XXX loss had to have hurt extremely bad for Steelers nation. From my perspective, Neil O'Donnell practically gift wrapped this game to Dallas. And manufactured an MVP.
Exactly....who else could they have given the MVP to other than Larry Brown who caught two interceptions that basically landed in his lap? Smith was stuffed the whole game. Irvin and Aikman had very average days. That high powered Dallas Offense never showed up due to Pittsburgh's D. Unless they gave it to O Donnell on behalf of Dallas.
I'm a Dallas fan since 1974. The MVP of that game as far as the Cowboys were concerned was Neil O'Donnell. They was going down in flames. O'Donnell threw that ball at Larry Brown like he was mad at him.
I was 14 and distraught in front of the TV watching O'Donnell throw the game away, I remember yelling "fucking cowboys, you will never ever win a super bowl again". Well, it has worked so far. So-called America's team hasn't even gotten to the conference championship game since.
Emmitt had less than 3 yards per carry! 18 carries for 49 yards and almost half of that came on one carry (23 yarder in 1st quarter). Remove his best run and he’s 17 carries for 26 yards. The Steelers D was excellent in this game. Pittsburgh had 60 or 70 more yards of offense. The Steelers D did not come up small. O’Donnel gave the game away.
This is one of the most underrated Super Bowls of all-time. The 90s incarnation of the Steel Curtain had contained Emmit Smith for a majority of the game. However the Steelers' cupcake offense was having trouble scoring points. After having to settle for a field goal to pull within 20-10, Bill Cowher calls for a surprise onside kick, one of the gutsiest calls ever. It succeeds (and if it didn't, game would have been over there). They rode the momentum to score a TD and pull within 3 points of one of the greatest dynasties of all time, get a big defensive stop and the ball back late with a chance to win or tie, and then...Neil O'Donnell throws a lameduck INT to Larry Brown for the SECOND time that day to basically set up a 1-yard TD by Smith. Cowher was such a good coach. The quarterbacks he had to work with: Neil O'Donnell, Jim Miller, Mike Tomczak, Kordell Stewart, Kent Graham, Tommy Maddox, these guys played in AFC Championship games during Cowher's tenure and their poor play in big games often cost them a Super Bowl trip. Even when Cowher and the Bus finally won a ring with Roethlisberger, Big Ben as a rookie sucked hard in the AFCC against New England, and despite playing great in the 05-06 playoffs had a HORRIBLE Super Bowl against Seattle. They would have lost again due to poor play from a QB in a big game (though Ben went on to become really good over time) had it not been for some lucky calls from the officials and from a nifty little trick play or two. Cowher has my Hall of Fame vote.
100%. My only problem with cowher was that he was very predictable on offense. But he was a great coach. This superbowl is the only loss that breaks my heart to this day.
Finally we got 1 on the Steelers series now 1-2 on that day it cemented the Steelers/Cowboys rivalry I wanna see my Cowboys tie the series lol... Our offense gets all the get Everytime it was our defense that got it done we were outgained they had more first down but we held them to 17pts. While the 2ints by Brown wasn't a spectacular play he took advantage and setup the offense tremendously... The drama distractions injuries spoke volumes to this teams mental toughness... Respect to the Steelers they didn't back down for 1sec.... And Coach Cowher's clip with his daughter needs to be shown to every parent and child how to be ultra competitive and hate that you lost but never show that you lost and no matter win or lose walk out with your head high

Between 1992 and 2003, if the Steelers simply would have been led by a consistent and talented QB or two, they probably win 2 or 3 Super Bowls. The defense was outstanding many of those years. The offense usually had a top flight running game and good enough receiving options. The QB situation normally held the team back from winning. The 95 team wins the SB with a QB like Aikman, Young, Elway, Marino, Favre, Moon, Kelly, Bledsoe or Cunningham.
I can’t think of any team that won a Super Bowl on the decline as you could tell the 95 Cowboys were starting to fall apart. That is how good the Cowboys dynasty was during the early 90s.

I don't see how Neil O'Donnell's meltdown in Superbowl XXX didn't get more commentary... 3 interceptions... two to the exact same guy, in the open, on the numbers for 77 yards & 14 points.?.?... If you followed that year, the Cowboys offense was rolling through teams; and the Steelers defense was holding them in the game, 13-7 at the half; a real opportunity for a win. The Steelers defense held Smith to 49 yards on the ground and only 9 in the second half! But O'Donnell choked hard (I mean a performance that bad, you'd almost think he was on the Cowboy's team.) Without the 14 points O'Donnell handed the Cowboys, the score's 17-13 Steelers... certainly a different game. Larry Brown shouldn't have been the Cowboy's MVP (certainly not a hero), for what, being awake?..., the Cowboys should have made Neil O'Donnell their MVP!
Why does everyone seem to think the Steelers would've scored on either of those possessions or that Dallas wouldn't have scored even after the Steelers punted? Dallas was the superior team, no question. The Steelers played at their peak, Cowher and Bam Morris bought them an extra possession and score on a brilliant call and play. But even with that they were still overmatched. While there were "off script" things that happened in the game, the result was pretty much exactly what people expected. Just like when the better Steelers teams beat the Cowboys teams in the 70's. Dallas punched over their weight in those games but the right team won.

Even if both those passes hit the ground the Steelers would have been punting to one of the most dangerous punt returners of all time in Deion Sanders, and giving it back to the NFL's leading rusher. A lot of teams bottled Smith up in the 1st half only to watch him gash them time and time again in the 2nd half. It's not likely that smaller Steelers D line could keep Emmitt from taking over. Just look at what he did after the interceptions. It was impressive that Cowher even got that Steelers team to the Superbowl, and amazing he kept them close with one of the gutsiest calls in SB history (the onside kick). But the Cowboys were always going to win that game. They had too much talent who weren't about to lose no matter who their HC was!

O'Donnell felt the pressure in his face and threw the hot route while the receiver went deep (O'Donnell would never have gotten that deep pass off). In any case, there was safety help deep so no one was running wide open. Bottom line, the Cowboys were the better team and if not for Bam Morris breaking what seemed like 80 tackles, it wouldn't have been close. The failed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and 1 plays did as much to hurt Pittsburgh because it forced them to pass more due to time remaining. If they convert at midfield they had a real chance to win.

This is a completion to Corey Holiday who replaced Ernie Mills who was knocked out of the game by Larry Brown earlier in the 4th quarter. Compare this play to the 2nd interception by Larry Brown (at 1:49:08). It is the exact same play call by Pittsburgh. Oddly enough too all those three Super Bowl looses took place at the Orange Bowl. Lose by 3 to the Colts and 4 to Pittsburgh 2X. All three losses could of went the other way. LEE, Part of the reason why.... Was the huge Herschel Walker trade they made when Jones took over. This one trade stockpiled Dallas with draft choices and talent. Combine that with Jimmie Johnson and a host of very good coordinators and they built a monster. Jones fired Johnson was the true end of it all... but the talent Johnson had steadily built was enough to get Dallas back one more time with a different coach. After this SB win... Switzer decided to run it "his way" to prove it was no fluke. Apparently, "his way" didn't work. The players is what kept Dallas winning... and when they started to go elsewhere... so did Switzer. Jones really did mess everything up by firing Johnson. I am still baffled to this day why he would ever kill his golden goose (so to speak). I do believe it is going to haunt him until he dies.

You mean he got his gift. Super Bowl XL is universally recognized by those who know something about football as the worst officiated SB in history with EVERY bogus call going in favor of Pittsburgh. Seattle's QB throws an interception and gets a 15 yard penalty for blocking below the waist when he TACKLED the player who made the interception. This penalty set up a Steelers' TD. This is just one example.
Robert Graham that penalty didn't set up the Steelers td the momentum already completely shifted since the interception would've still counted. If you look closely that really was the only bad call that game. Jackson Pushed off so that was the correct call, and on Bens td the call on the field was a touchdown and by rule they cannot overturn the call if there isn't complete 100% evidence that the ball did not break the plane and Roethlisbergers arm was covering the top of the ball so you couldn't tell if the ball never touched the very tip of the goal line so the call needed to stand. And the holding call in the 4th was a hold. Locklear grabbed Haggans jersey and pulled backwards causing him to fall over. It was a small hold but could still be called because it technically was. You can't blame the refs for Seattle losing that game, I remember on Ben's interception in the red zone he got blocked in the back while perusing the defender and it wasn't called and that allowed him to gain like 30 more yards. Missed calls can happen at times but it did not decide that game.

However after the Cowboys lost Jerry Jones went out and signed Deion Sanders away from the 49ers which pushed the Cowboys over the top during the 1995 season to win another Super Bowl. This game was kind of a microcosm of that 1995 Dallas season - they didn't play great most of the time but just got by on talent alone for the most part. Same for this game, they were dominated by the Steelers for the last 3 quarters but their talent was enough to barely push them by. That and an incompetent quarterback on Pittsburgh's side.

I never believed O'DONNELL was paid off until i seen a video my brother had of Cowar's reaction of it. Cowar needed to be restrained from going after him and a few choice words at him. They blamed the receiver for running the wrong route, but Cowar's reaction said opposite. I think O'DONNELL was paid off. If it was just a honest mistake again, i believe Cowar would of blown it off as that. Pittsburgh born n raised here. This was a painful game for a 9 year old to watch. The Steelers are the only team with 6 SB wins though. I hate the cowboys and was glad to see GB beat them. Also, the Steelers beat KC without scoring a touchdown. It'll be interesting to see the Steelers Patriots game for the AFC Championship.

We started out like we were gonna blow the steelers away. But Michael Irvin's pushoff( that would've put us up 17-0) led to it turning into a struggle. We all know that Pittsburgh has beaten Dallas 2 out of 3 times in the Super Bowl. And they were all outstanding games. But despite success against Dallas from Super Bowl's: X & XIII, the Super Bowl XXX loss had to have hurt extremely bad for Steelers nation. From my perspective, Neil O'Donnell practically gift wrapped this game to Dallas. And manufactured an MVP.
Exactly....who else could they have given the MVP to other than Larry Brown who caught two interceptions that basically landed in his lap? Smith was stuffed the whole game. Irvin and Aikman had very average days. That high powered Dallas Offense never showed up due to Pittsburgh's D. Unless they gave it to O Donnell on behalf of Dallas.

Emmitt had less than 3 yards per carry! 18 carries for 49 yards and almost half of that came on one carry (23 yarder in 1st quarter). Remove his best run and he’s 17 carries for 26 yards. The Steelers D was excellent in this game.
Pittsburgh had 60 or 70 more yards of offense. The Steelers D did not come up small. O’Donnel gave the game away.

This is one of the most underrated Super Bowls of all-time. The 90s incarnation of the Steel Curtain had contained Emmit Smith for a majority of the game. However the Steelers' cupcake offense was having trouble scoring points. After having to settle for a field goal to pull within 20-10, Bill Cowher calls for a surprise onside kick, one of the gutsiest calls ever. It succeeds (and if it didn't, game would have been over there). They rode the momentum to score a TD and pull within 3 points of one of the greatest dynasties of all time, get a big defensive stop and the ball back late with a chance to win or tie, and then...Neil O'Donnell throws a lameduck INT to Larry Brown for the SECOND time that day to basically set up a 1-yard TD by Smith.
Cowher was such a good coach. The quarterbacks he had to work with: Neil O'Donnell, Jim Miller, Mike Tomczak, Kordell Stewart, Kent Graham, Tommy Maddox, these guys played in AFC Championship games during Cowher's tenure and their poor play in big games often cost them a Super Bowl trip.
Even when Cowher and the Bus finally won a ring with Roethlisberger, Big Ben as a rookie sucked hard in the AFCC against New England, and despite playing great in the 05-06 playoffs had a HORRIBLE Super Bowl against Seattle. They would have lost again due to poor play from a QB in a big game (though Ben went on to become really good over time) had it not been for some lucky calls from the officials and from a nifty little trick play or two. Cowher has my Hall of Fame vote.

Our offense gets all the get Everytime it was our defense that got it done we were outgained they had more first down but we held them to 17pts. While the 2ints by Brown wasn't a spectacular play he took advantage and setup the offense tremendously... The drama distractions injuries spoke volumes to this teams mental toughness... Respect to the Steelers they didn't back down for 1sec.... Between 1992 and 2003, if the Steelers simply would have been led by a consistent and talented QB or two, they probably win 2 or 3 Super Bowls. The defense was outstanding many of those years. The offense usually had a top flight running game and good enough receiving options. The QB situation normally held the team back from winning. The 95 team wins the SB with a QB like Aikman, Young, Elway, Marino, Favre, Moon, Kelly, Bledsoe or Cunningham.
Same thing with the chiefs in the 90s, they had great defenses but we're held back because of terrible offense and the qb position sucked.

I don't see how Neil O'Donnell's meltdown in Superbowl XXX didn't get more commentary... 3 interceptions... two to the exact same guy, in the open, on the numbers for 77 yards & 14 points.?.?... If you followed that year, the Cowboys offense was rolling through teams; and the Steelers defense was holding them in the game, 13-7 at the half; a real opportunity for a win. The Steelers defense held Smith to 49 yards on the ground and only 9 in the second half! But O'Donnell choked hard (I mean a performance that bad, you'd almost think he was on the Cowboy's team.) Without the 14 points O'Donnell handed the Cowboys, the score's 17-13 Steelers... certainly a different game. Larry Brown shouldn't have been the Cowboy's MVP (certainly not a hero), for what, being awake?..., the Cowboys should have made Neil O'Donnell their MVP!
Why does everyone seem to think the Steelers would've scored on either of those possessions or that Dallas wouldn't have scored even after the Steelers punted? Dallas was the superior team, no question. The Steelers played at their peak, Cowher and Bam Morris bought them an extra possession and score on a brilliant call and play. But even with that they were still overmatched. While there were "off script" things that happened in the game, the result was pretty much exactly what people expected. Just like when the better Steelers teams beat the Cowboys teams in the 70's. Dallas punched over their weight in those games but the right team won.

I wouldn't go that far. Even if both those passes hit the ground the Steelers would have been punting to one of the most dangerous punt returners of all time in Deion Sanders, and giving it back to the NFL's leading rusher. A lot of teams bottled Smith up in the 1st half only to watch him gash them time and time again in the 2nd half. It's not likely that smaller Steelers D line could keep Emmitt from taking over. Just look at what he did after the interceptions. It was impressive that Cowher even got that Steelers team to the Superbowl, and amazing he kept them close with one of the gutsiest calls in SB history (the onside kick). But the Cowboys were always going to win that game. They had too much talent who weren't about to lose no matter who their HC was!

@@trjohnson57 Cowboy fan here. On the 2nd INT the alternative to throwing the interception wasn't the ball hitting the ground. O'Donnell had Corey Holiday open down the sidelines for a touchdown.
@@Bob31415 it was zone coverage, and Brown was reading the QB and able to sit down for a possible crossing route. O'Donnell felt the pressure in his face and threw the hot route while the receiver went deep (O'Donnell would never have gotten that deep pass off). In any case, there was safety help deep so no one was running wide open.
Bottom line, the Cowboys were the better team and if not for Bam Morris breaking what seemed like 80 tackles, it wouldn't have been close. The failed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and 1 plays did as much to hurt Pittsburgh because it forced them to pass more due to time remaining. If they convert at midfield they had a real chance to win.

Watch the Steelers play at 1:55:09. This play occurs after the 2nd interception and the Cowboys going up 27-17. This is a completion to Corey Holiday who replaced Ernie Mills who was knocked out of the game by Larry Brown earlier in the 4th quarter. Compare this play to the 2nd interception by Larry Brown (at 1:49:08). It is the exact same play call by Pittsburgh. Neil O'Donnell was responsible for 2 Cowboy touchdowns in a game where they won by 10. Sad how this turned out. Cowboys were a more talented team but Switzer was thoroughly outcoached.

Also, they should definitely have won SB V against the Colts. Dallas has had many historic wins, but just as equally, many devastating losses. Oddly enough too all those three Super Bowl looses took place at the Orange Bowl. Lose by 3 to the Colts and 4 to Pittsburgh 2X. All three losses could of went the other way. Super Bowl was a big game with so many incredible players. The winner got to claim 'Team of the 70s''

Was the huge Herschel Walker trade they made when Jones took over. This one trade stockpiled Dallas with draft choices and talent.
Combine that with Jimmie Johnson and a host of very good coordinators and they built a monster.
Jones fired Johnson was the true end of it all... but the talent Johnson had steadily built was enough to get Dallas back one more time with a different coach.
After this SB win... Switzer decided to run it "his way" to prove it was no fluke.
Apparently, "his way" didn't work.
The players is what kept Dallas winning... and when they started to go elsewhere... so did Switzer.

You mean he got his gift. Super Bowl XL is universally recognized by those who know something about football as the worst officiated SB in history with EVERY bogus call going in favor of Pittsburgh. Seattle's QB throws an interception and gets a 15 yard penalty for blocking below the waist when he TACKLED the player who made the interception. This penalty set up a Steelers' TD. This is just one example.
Robert Graham that penalty didn't set up the Steelers td the momentum already completely shifted since the interception would've still counted. If you look closely that really was the only bad call that game. Jackson Pushed off so that was the correct call, and on Bens td the call on the field was a touchdown and by rule they cannot overturn the call if there isn't complete 100% evidence that the ball did not break the plane and Roethlisbergers arm was covering the top of the ball so you couldn't tell if the ball never touched the very tip of the goal line so the call needed to stand. And the holding call in the 4th was a hold. Locklear grabbed Haggans jersey and pulled backwards causing him to fall over. It was a small hold but could still be called because it technically was. You can't blame the refs for Seattle losing that game, I remember on Ben's interception in the red zone he got blocked in the back while perusing the defender and it wasn't called and that allowed him to gain like 30 more yards. Missed calls can happen at times but it did not decide that game.

A lot of people forget that the previous season the Cowboys were going for 3 Super Bowls in a row when they lost in the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME to the dreaded 49ers. However after the Cowboys lost Jerry Jones went out and signed Deion Sanders away from the 49ers which pushed the Cowboys over the top during the 1995 season to win another Super Bowl. This was to the chagrin of Stephen Jones. This is when JJ had cajones and everyone knew this was his team including his Capboy son Stephen Jones. Those days (going on 28 years) are long gone. "Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end"!

Other than the '78 Steelers, I can't think of a more talented team than the '95 Cowboys...& MY STEELERS HAD 'EM BEAT IF IT WEREN'T FOR NEIL 'JAGOFF' O'DONNELL!!!
This game was kind of a microcosm of that 1995 Dallas season - they didn't play great most of the time but just got by on talent alone for the most part. Same for this game, they were dominated by the Steelers for the last 3 quarters but their talent was enough to barely push them by. That and an incompetent quarterback on Pittsburgh's side.

I never believed O'DONNELL was paid off until i seen a video my brother had of Cowar's reaction of it. Cowar needed to be restrained from going after him and a few choice words at him. They blamed the receiver for running the wrong route, but Cowar's reaction said opposite. I think O'DONNELL was paid off. If it was just a honest mistake again, i believe Cowar would of blown it off as that. Cowar how i understand it was a different type of coach, He put in his 30-50 hours a week of football and that was it, he had a life outside of football

How funny is that at the end of the video "the only question is how big will the next ring be." Well 20 years later they still haven't seen that ring. The Cowboys had something awesome going, but jerry jones ego is so humongous that they have gone 20 years without even reaching a super bowl. Absolutely crazy!

The narrator was referring to the ring they would be getting for winning this Super Bowl, because obviously they hadn't received them yet.
Hopefully, O'Donnell has a Super Bowl ring for his important contributions to the Cowboys win. Both INTs made me think that O'Donnell had a lot riding on Dallas winning. Neither INT made a lick of logical sense.

Pittsburgh born n raised here. This was a painful game for a 9 year old to watch. The Steelers are the only team with 6 SB wins though. I hate the cowboys and was glad to see GB beat them. Also, the Steelers beat KC without scoring a touchdown. It'll be interesting to see the Steelers Patriots game for the AFC Championship.

We started out like we were gonna blow the steelers away. But Michael Irvin's pushoff( that would've put us up 17-0) led to it turning into a struggle. If ANYONE had told me then that we would be SB less for at least the next quarter of a century following this( our 3rd win in 4 years) there's no way I would've ever believed it.
The 2nd half of this Super Bowl is when the 90s Cowboy Dynasty started heading south.
