Cambodian town of Sihanoukville scarred by Chinese influence

Cambodia is increasingly looking away from the West and more towards China as it seeks partners in its economic development. Nowhere is this more evident than in the southern seaside town of Sihanoukville. Once famed for its beautiful beaches, the town has been dramatically changed by massive construction projects including many hotels and casinos. Much of the change comes as a result of the growing influence of Chinese nationals, who have reshaped the town and surrounding province with their investment and very presence. While some locals have benefited from the Chinese influx, many others say they are being left behind.

2016, this town was nice and peaceful and beautiful as he described it. Small quaint hotels and hostels and Cambodian cafe and restaurants businesses. 2017: Things changed dramatically in such a short period. Everything Chinese. Chinese casinos, hotels, land, groceries. I wish I could make it stop but like most locals I felt helpless as it isn't my country. I hope this town goes back to the way it was or better with more support for local Cambodians and preservation of environment. I miss the old SIhanoukville.

@@BlackKnight_999 well i haven't touched that topic of mass immigration through infrastructure investment yet, but you have also raised one of the concerns. Indeed investment in general bring benefits to the country in a lot of ways. Still, sudden mass immigration has its cons, heavy pressure on resources, different culture clashes, price hike in living expenses, population imbalances in countries with different races, and political shifts in countries that are allowed to vote.
China is indeed the most populous country in the world, but it's nowhere near the top 50 (I remember arounx 80) when it comes to population density, in fact they are even far behind from ASEAN country. The reason for these migrations is far away from the current topic, but just to say their population is not a reason for their migration.

I wondered how they later distributed the land again. I believe the super rich and elites who escaped the massacres gained from it and took whatever they could lay their hands on. And the many poor remained homeless or not allowed to get back their old property. There was a huge lake in Phnom Penh where many people live around one. Sihanoukville will be the entertainment hub in SEA and also tourism; attracting various nationalities of tourists from SEA. Better and larger than Macau and Las Vegas.
People just have to adjust to the transition period. All countries on the planet have been thru this transition period. Cambodia is no exception, or you can sit around, keep jerking, do nothing, stay poor and misery forever. Progression and development is better than dropping bombs from the skies. The western imperialists like war and bring war to non-white and non-western countries.

The Prime Minister of Cambodian supposedly been “elected” for the past 32 years - he is part Chinese and a supposedly eliminates any opposition parties that run against him. It’s wrong in humanity and we all should know in in our hearts.

Interpol and UN are useless, these crime syndicates have been going for years!

It’s literally the same here. Well our situation is not that hard since we’re upper middle class and the number of Chinese people isn’t that high but there are a lot more Chinese people everywhere and a lot of chinese shops have opened up by Chinese people. This might seem fine but look at what they did to Sri Lanka and other countries that are now in debt by the Chinese

I was inrage when i saw how destroyed this provinces has become. It is my relatives home town, i remember how beautiful Sihanouk was when i was 8-9 but now all i can see are half finished, abandoned buildings. I particularly remember a building that was built by the side of one the mountains, it was modern and painted purely black. It was one of the most off putting thing i ever saw during my trip there. I miss what it used to be dearly 😢

Those Chinese with the shirts pulled up and bellies out are rural Chinese.
What are they doing investing in Cambodia ?
How did they come up with the money to do so ?

Um, no. That stylish look is known as the 'Beijing bikini' colloquially within the expat community in China. But it's popular all over China with both urban and rural dwellers.
