The Bay of Lights: Cambodia's city on sand

- Cambodia’s southern coastline is being totally transformed by a massive US$16 billion “eco city” in Sihanoukville. But pressures are mounting on the project and its developers, and it has stirred discontent among locals and fuelled environmentalists’ worries. Read the full report: cna.asia/3JNgVC8

Okay 😒 I’m sure Marina Bay Sand and many of Singapore’s land reclamation also built largely using Cambodian sand and most of them bought from unidentified sources without Cambodian government recognition. Maybe CNA should do a report about these unethical purchase of white sands?
If i recall correctly, the sand for Marina Bay Sands is brought from Indonesia and Vietnam. I think there's a documentary/article about it if you want to look.
Singapore has reclaimed too much land in their soil, did they ask international community permission to do so? Does it affect environment and ecological system in Singapore, Malaysia and the pacific ocean?
@@coreana.aesthetics so true
You don't need to ask permission when reclaiming land within your own sovereignty unless it clearly impacts another nation. Marina Bay is too far to have any impact on other countries and also SG don't have fishermen living there and depending their livelihoods on fishing . @@coreana.aesthetics
How is reclaiming lands gonna affect Pacific ocean from thousands of kilometres or even Indonesia and Malaysia that are hundreds of km away. Why not question China building islands on coral reefs that actually damage ecosystems in the South China Sea. UN condemned China and so what lol they keep building more.@@coreana.aesthetics

Chinese doesn't invest to help the poor. They invest to make the rich richer and the poor poorer. If things don't work out, the country becomes one of the Chinese debt traps... easy like that.
what funny is CNA quoted RFA 😂😂. Rarely or never seen CNA talking about positivity in Cambodia.
Yea the moment they quoted RFA this video lost its credibility
CNA is a US tool of propaganda
US-funded Radio Free Asia (RFA) shuts down its propaganda social media in Hong Kong after passing of new national security law known as Article 23.
Haha you're right! The reporter did not know RFA is a media funded just to fight the government. Or maybe CNA also follows RFA's standard too.
Dude, most of the unfinished buildings in Cambodia have a China investors who are currently bankrupted due to the combined effects of the Great CCP lockdown and Great bubbles burst. Anyone who pickup the abandoned projects will get burnt and take on unnecessary financial risks. The best example would be Forest city in Malaysia also known as 1mdb city.
You're wrong. Currently, most of the unfinished buildings were rebuilt. You need to say new information not old information.
It all depends on the price you pick the buildings up at. But yeah, I do agree with you that here in Cambodia a lot of it had to do with speculation and I'm expecting a real estate crash soon
It is just an overbuilt (speculation bubble). "houses are for living in, not for speculation" - xi jinping. Those who speculate will get burned the most like Wall Street investment funds lose billions on China Evergrande bonds. Today China is a country of homeowners with more than 90% of households owning homes (87% in urban and 96% in rural China) (Clark, Huang, & Yi, 2019). At the same time, more than 20% Chinese households own multiple homes, higher than many developed nations (Huang et al., 2020)
Forest city is a ghost town, investors buy it to invest and not for staying. Which is why 70% sold and hardly anyone lives there. Projects solely for foreigners to park their wealth, simply won't fly
@daya4703 which ones have been rebuilt ?
Never see any good news about cambodia from CNA

It doesn't seem right to treat human beings in this cruel way. At least give these people a proper place with electricity and running water to live comfortably.

Sihanoukville is very beautiful, natural and nice foods. there's no such thing as high crime rate in cambodia
It's not because it is western media that's why they have a negative view in this. If you learned to research and read, the projects that China built in Cambodia are of unbelievably high interest rate. Not to mention, prices are so bloated that you can build 4 projects of the same size in other SEAsian nation and yet is only used for 1 project on Cambodia.
There is no hope for this country. Little did they know, their islands and sovereignty are sold and given in exchange.

A ghost city abounding in unfinished and dilapidated buildings. The pseudo glitz and glamour would not help the locals at all but rather, render the city a nickname:" A new chinese colony"
Westerners should come to invest in Cambodia if you want us better than this but Cambodia is safety country than you thought.
Yes, it is true, If you have pistol.
I kind of disagree with that guy Virak. Most of these projects are built with black money and comes mostly from corrupt private individuals. They don't have the funds to complete the project in the first place so they build to resell it to another investor hoping to make big profits. When things went south they all fled. The problem is nobody will want to pour investments into these poorly built buildings. It's better if they tear all of it down and restart over. I think they need to change the model to a sustainable affordable housing market framework. The prices of these condo units are insane for majority of the locals making less than 1 dollar a day.
I came here for information on the project. Got negative propaganda of how bad Cambodia is instead

As a Cambodian seeing those unfinished building literally ruined the whole city's beauty. Sihanoukville use to be a beautiful beach city with beautiful beaches and few high rises mostly hotels, casinos didn't exist at that time, but now there're hundreds of them and most of them aren't even finished when the Chinese left. And I hope the government do something with those casinos and unfinished buildings by remodeling them into something else maybe like malls, apartments, or an entertainment centre.

The US has provided about $1 billion to Cambodia since 1992. From 2010 to 2019, the majority of US aid went to health and population, governance, and education. In 2021-2022, USAID programs in Cambodia helped nearly 120,000 people economically, including $50 million in carbon credit sales to help indigenous and underserved communities.
These aids are targeted at the locals and not the elites so it doesn't make headlines. But it's crucial to meet the UN SDG goals.
