Imaging with light and sound: Acousto Optic & Photoacoustic Imaging
In this webinar, Dr. Baptiste Jayet explains the concept of two different techniques using light and sound to image deeper into biological tissues.
The first technique is called photoacoustic imaging and is based on the detection of an acoustic wave following light absorption. Details are given on the photoacoustic phenomenon, how to locate where absorption occurred in order to form images of biomolecules at centimeters deep into tissue. Applications discussed involved breast, dermatologic and muscoskeletal imaging, as well as looking at vasculature in body extremities.
The second technique is called acousto-optic imaging and is based on the detection of a modulated light wave travelling through an acoustic field. Details are given on the acousto-optic physics and methods to extract information from the tagged photons containing information about deep tissue layers. Applications on imaging lesions and focusing light in tissue have been explained, followed by the potential of such focusing to, for instance, excite upconverting nanoparticles more efficiently.
