Making A Drill Stand Part 1 - Profile Extrusion In The Workshop

- In this video I endeavour to make a solid drill from aluminium profile extrusion. This is part in which I make the drill stand itself. In part 2, I'll be making the base with adjustable fence to mount it to, as well as doing more comprehensive demo of it in action.
This is a straight up and down drill stand, not for angle drilling. I just wanted something that could drill reliably straight even with longer and larger diameter drill bits. I've not tried any drill stand that didn't have some degree of flex when pushed - except for this one!
Made around an Openbuilds Spindle Mount with a 43mm sleeve, it can be used with any corded percussion drill, or cordless drill/driver with a 43mm collar. This opened it up for use with my Mafell FM1000 milling motor, turning it into a mobile surfacing router.
If you're interested in any of the parts I used, I'll leave some links below.
You'll be able to find the profile extrusions, corner plates, corner brackets, sliding t-nuts and screws on Ooznest. For the Linear rails, I'll provide a link to Banggood who offer good value options on the MGN 12 rails I use in the video.

Great set up looking forward to part two
Thanks mate. Hopefully have part 2 up by Friday 👍
Like it! Especially for use flattening resin pours.
Just excellent again.
Cheers! All the best for the season and 2024.
Thank you mate! Yeah, great to be able to mill the tops off resin blobs 👍
Spot on looks a lovely bit of kit
Thanks mate. Pretty pleased with it 👍
Thanks. Ill check it out everything.
2:02 That took me off guard 🤣
Trouserless news guy? Can't beat that kind of professionalism at work😂
Great work! It's a similar approach to the Mafell drilling guide. You can upgrade the underside of the base with a phenolic laminate sheet (more expensive routers have it). This will improve the sliding characteristics.
Yeah, my mafell routers have that phenolic base cover. The profile slides well enough though. Still might look into what's available for the base. 👍
Awesome project!
Hey, thank you!😁
Great to see some more of your extrusion designs. You have some great ideas.
Glad you think so! Thank you mate👍
Loving the series of videos
Thanks mate, appreciate that. Might be a bit niche for mass appeal but, hopefully interesting to some.👍
Nailed it amigo! Good to see another one of your videos.
Thank you mate. Glad you're still looking in!👍
You can also add laser guides for precise aiming for drilling.
Yes mate. I've been looking at a few. Not decided yet but I'll add one eventually 👍
you are the man keep expressing that mega brain to your fingers. (aka cool as shit way to do the fundamentals)
😁 Thanks man!
Great video.
Where do. You buy the profile aluminium? Cheers.
Cheers. Most of the profile, nuts, brackets, plates etc I get from Ooznest (link in description). Linear rails I tend to buy off Banggood (again, link in description)👍
@@BischBaschBosch thank you. I'll have a look.
We're i can buy motor mount like that? Or can it be built by myself?
I got mine from Ooznest. They will also 3d print a 43mm spacer / collar for you to fit the drill or Mafell motor. They also stock aly profile and fixings and deliver worldwide. They're very helpful so contact them if you have any doubts/questions before ordering
What do you think is it ok put this mafell motor into the table? Do you have the idea how to make esier construction? Or its better to buy a lift and a table just ready .. in Dictum shop was some lift for about 500.. im still affrade that its a bit comlicated to make it miself..
👍👍👍🤗🇨🇭
Cheers buddy🙌
