- Adopting ex-battery hens from BHWT. I've not had any for about 9 years and finally I have more time to enjoy having these special ladies again.
Thank you to all the people at the British Hen Welfare Trust that give up their time to give these girls a second chance.

Thank you from Florida for taking these chickens these home. I know it has been a couple of years; however you still need to be thanked. My husband and I have chicken enthusiasts for years. Have very spoiled chickens in the back yard. :).

Whenever my parents pick up new chickens she always gets the badly bullied, plucked ones that are at the bottom of the pecking order.
Watching them recover, flourish and be content is calming for the soul.
That’s wonderful, I adopted a bullied chicken last October & she was so frightened, so I hand fed her apples & gave her a separate water dish now a year later she’s so happy she jumps up on the gate every time I open it & stands her ground with the others. As you said it’s amazing to watch as they change & recover 🤗

6 instead of 4 🤣I'd already guessed, as you had an extra box! (me too!) That Omlet coop & run must've cost a fortune - lucky chooks! They look well - I've seen much worse 😥 funny how they just stand and look in amazement. 10:00 Observing, it's nice here, we'll stay awhile... you're very patient - that's just what they need. I just shout chook chook chook, food works! Funny how their appetite wanes as they prefer to scratch around, they don't HAVE to lay an egg a day. Lovely birdsong & cat btw, there's always one who camps out... lovely video - I have some rescues and know they have problems...

These chickens have now sadly gone as they don’t always last that long and this video was quite a while ago now. Ahhh thank you so much for your kind words…people are always needed to adopt the chickens and it’s so rewarding seeing them enjoying the normal things that they’re supposed to do like scratching and pecking for bugs. Their little characters are so endearing.

Update 26.7.24 I've had a lot of comments about the closure being to small for 6 chickens, I do know & understand. If you watch my other videos you will see that our beloved chickens are let out every day into the garden to roam free. The only reason I took 6 was because someone didn't turn up & there were homeless chickens, so some of us took extra's to make sure they all had a home. This video was 3 years ago & we no longer have those chickens (we now have 3 at the moment) as they don't always last long due to the stress there put under in the farms. Please be assured that our chickens are treated with the upmost love & care & lots of treats, that's why we rehome them to give them a happy ending to there sometimes short lives.

I have just spent the last 3 day building a coop and run
Going to drive to Gateshead to pick up 12 battery girls tomorrow, hopefully for a long happy life on our small holding in North Northumberland. I have never had chickens but looking forward to giving the poor girls a fresh start

Hi, as I keep saying to people if you watch the other videos you will find out that our chickens are let out every single day into the garden to roam free. This video was 3 years ago & the intention was to have 4 chickens but when we arrived someone had not turned up & there was extra chickens that were homeless! so some of us took extra's to make sure they were all homed. Those 6 are no longer with us as they don't always last long. At the moment we have 3, they are treated with the upmost love & care, that's the whole point of rehoming them !!!!
They must be very happy 💜

@@SuzannesSimpleLiving hi we collected 5,sadly one (Elsie) was a bully and the 4 girls was petrified of her,they lived with their heads down,to scared to eat or drink.
So after a week and her being in prison,we rehomed her to a friend with a large flock and a cockerel….she attacked the cockerel…and he put her in her place!
She’s now happy.
Our girls are happy and we are getting 4 eggs a day.
They are amazing and learning perfectly to ‘hen’…living their best life!!

We've had 16 in total from FSFH's. They are the most wonderful and friendly birds.

use a ramp instead of a ladder. they like it more.
Had an eglu ,but really not impressed with them ,the so sold mine and got Nestera large penthouse which is truly awesome..

Chickens are so endearing ,I love having them. This is a permanent house and run but we let them out everyday so they can run around the garden and do there natural thing of finding bugs and scratching around.

How are they now? I want to adopt ex battery hens in the future, but I’m slightly put off by the idea of them being too sick to save. I absolutely love chickens, especially mine, and I recently lost one of my older girls that I loved deeply :(
A couple of them have died and yes they may not live as long but for me these girls deserve to see the outside even if it’s a short while. They gave there life at the farm to just lay eggs for 18 months and to see them enjoying the sun, sky, grass, scratching around and being themselves is so rewarding. Some of them do come out a bit tatty but with the right diet they soon grow there feathers back. I love them to and they become part of the family.

What have you put in the bottom of the run? The hen trust suggested that I use straw but yours looks like bark. Are you using a no dig composting thing? Have hens arriving soon
Hi Laura, sorry only just spotted your comment! Yes I use bark that's safe for kids so its ok for chickens as well, it eventually just breaks down & we use it in our raised beds so yes just like a compost. I've literally just taken out the old compost after a year but topped it up during last summer with another bag after it had broken down a bit. I wouldn't use straw unless your run is covered, if it rains it will turn into a soggy mess! Good luck with your girls, they are so endearing! 😊🐣🐤🐥🐓🐔

HI, my ladies have always coped with the plastic ladders & they are easy to wash, I have never had any issues with them, wooden ones I find can give splinters because the wood rots eventually! Depends what you prefer & how your chickens cope ☺

we do let them out as well so they are able to run around the garden 🙂
@@SuzannesSimpleLiving Our hens on the alotment are given mostly veggies and they LOVE soaked mealworms. They love all the scrap food and mashed potato but when they see soaked mealworms they will chase you everywhere for them :D

I think you mean well BUT for 6 chickens the space is TOO SMALL I really hope you let them out
And if you bothered to read some of the other comments on my chicken videos you will see that I let my chickens out every day maybe you should ask instead of assuming…. I have kept chickens for many years and believe you me they are treated with the upmost of respect and love that they could ever have they are rescue chickens and I absolutely adore them. The chickens in that video are no longer with us rescue chickens don’t live that long after they come out of the farm and have been mistreated which is why I rescue them so that they can have a decent life before they die. Ask in future don’t just assume…. i’m nearly 57 years old I have many years experience!!
