Today we had some new family members as we took four lovely hens from a caged hen farm that closed down in Sheffield. In this movie we give them their new freedom and they meet our current chicken and the rest of our family. All their feathers will grow back and they'll be happy and healthy very soon.
UPDATE: Battery farms have been banned in the UK since 2012, but we did not realise this. Our chickens were caged hens, and we were told (by the charity we got them from) that they lived in poor conditions. You can see this from the state of their feathers and combs.

@@ziggie16 Not really. First of all, you've never hunted that's for sure - shoot a dear straight through both lungs and it will still run several hundred meters before collapsing and starts gasping as the lungs deflate. Second of all, almost all predators hunt away from their homes then brings the carcass with them home, almost all predators also make sure that their prey is dead before they start eating it. Lions for instance does this by crushing the wind pipe, as do wolves, matter of fact that's what most predators do, which is why they take their prey over the neck or the throat once they've captured it... why? Because food is scarce for wild animals, they're not that effective hunters and thus they need to make sure their prey doesn't get away once it's captured. Snakes, spiders and the like are usually exceptions to this. Third... how you die matters very little compared to the years spent in abhorrent living situations and humans are the only species that keeps both its own species and other species in terrible and unsustainable living conditions.

As for animals killing their prey first - every animal that you mentioned do use throat clamps, but are also known to often eat their prey alive. Don't believe me? Look it up. Really most animals won't hesitate to eat their prey alive. Think birds, large reptiles, bears, hyenas, wild dogs, small carnivorous mammals, marine vertebrates etc.

These birds look anemic and in poor condition and yet, people buy their eggs/meat and eat them! Stressed animals give out stressed food products (eggs)...which can´t be healthy for the consuming public. You are what you eat! Wouldn´t it make more sense to house these chickens adequately and give them room to run? But, factory farms have taken over and the bottom line is what matters to them.
Anyways, I am HAPPY that these lovely birds were saved and soon enough will recover and enjoy what is left of their natural lives. God Bless people like this who give up a corner of their yards to rescue a mistreated animal. I have chickens and I care very much for them! They are lovely, intelligent animals.

Thank you for rescuing them. I would love to rescue some hens, but I have a couple of foxes in my garden, so I'm too scared they would get eaten.

That is highly likely! I have to work hard to stop foxes getting in at night. If they live there, you are best to wait.

@@AntLofter Yes, your right it's not worth the risk. Our garden backs onto some allotments, there are chickens kept on the allotments and I enjoy hearing them. The foxes are beautiful to watch, but I know what great hunters they are.

No animal or bird should have to go through life like that. Life is often very cruel.

rescued already 30 of them, soon the next will follow after Christmas, when they are thrown away from industries for 1 € per hen
they get so tame after a short while, like they know what happened

It depresses and sickens me to see these hens in such a state. (Speaking of battery farms, not these kind people) I can tell they are very unhealthy. Their combs are pink, not red. Their plumage is not shiny and feathers broken off everywhere. These are the birds whose eggs and meat we are eating... it’s really not a good thing FOR US as well.
As someone who owns several chickens, has studied chicken health, to see birds in such a state like this, it’s absolute abuse that they had to have been going through to end up this way. That’s vile. I’m not against eating chickens. But if you’re going to have them for eggs and meat, treat them right and respect the life they’re giving to us.

Well said! Totally agree. These were actually caged hens, but I've seen healthier hens from closing battery farms than these birds. The conditions must have been terrible for them.

I bought three barter hens who looked exactly like this and were super dehydrated I felt like buying every chicken in that place😾😿their feathers on the necks and backsides were broken and missing ,but now after three months ,their combs are redder than blood and feathers are coming slowly but surely🙉

I made a point of buying ex battery hens at auction, where cheap restaurants would buy them up to kill and cook them. Many times u the time I got them home there would be 1 or 2 eggs in their carry box as though they were thanking me. It was good to see them on grass and gradually feather up again. Also I had eggs all year round, the yolks changing from pale yellow to deep orange as their diet.improved

this is why i raise my own chickens for eggs. the fact we make tendies out of the hens is bad enough but caging them to batteries just for eggs only to throw them in the incinerator is beyond reprehensible.
