    Few people remember that when the Darkness landed, we were in the middle of a puke fest of nu metal and boy band cacophony. You guys were like a kick in the face from out of nowhere. I'll always remember that time and always support this band.

      Exactly you get it. Rock N Roll has been in a sad state for many years and especially during the time period before the darkness came on the scene. I mean bands would be criticized for playing live upbeat rock n roll. Not metal enough or not grunge enough. It got to be to a point of stupidity. The Darkness was one of the few bands willing to embrace that big 80's duel guitar sound and actually have fun playing live rock n roll again. Heaven forbid they sounded like Queen and AC/DC put together they were great and unashamed as you put it a breath of fresh air from all the rap metal and scream metal where you couldn't understand a single damn lyric. The musicianship was there the singing and playing was great. People hated the bands 2nd album One Way Ticket and I loved it.

    I first heard the darkness coming out of a window from my neighbors house. The riff just stuck in my head for days. I had pretty much given up on new bands, but when I heard PTL it inspired me. I was soooo sick of everything being so damn depressing. That album from start to finish takes you on a ride. I'm still hoping to someday be a part of a band that can capture that energy. Have come close a few times, but usually my ex band mates wanted to fit in with "modern music" so I end up walking away. That album will always have a special place for me!

    I love your way of seeing things regarding the Kiss backing tracks. I would completely agree with it if it weren't for the dishonesty and the hypocrisy. I realize that it was a number of years ago, but all that means is that they are totally against backing tracks...until it's their turn to need them. Love the channel.

    One Way Ticket is how I got into The Darkness. Heard it on K-Rock in NYC & a new favorite was born. When the station went talk radio, I was pissed. It was the only decent radio station in the NYC area, & the only that played The Darkness. Needless to say, I had to (& still do) purchase each and every CD. Yes, actual hardcopy. And Hot Leg? Omg, fantastic! Love Trojan Guitar!
    Is It Just Me? is definitely a close 2nd favorite Darkness song, probably because the video was fucking incredible.

      I also agree. So much clever wit in the lyrics with great variance of music and of course the RTB and Queen influences are major pluses for me. How could you not smile at lyrics like "I may not be your Mr Right, bit I'm happy to be that''ll do for the night".

    Great channel Justin. Regarding stage presence & ownership, may I suggest you yourself are possibly influenced by & indebted to (consciously or not) late 70's early to late 80's Prince - who totally owned the stage, frequently shredding it & his guitar simultaneously. Both perfectly & singing flawlessly to boot!!! Rock on!!

    Speaking of stream of consciousness, there's a story that Ryan Adams, a Y'allternative singer/songwriter based in Nashville, abandoned his usual set list at a gig (as I heard it, it was Dublin's Olympia Theater in the mid to late 00s) and tried to make up songs for the rest of the set!

You basically write extremely excellent rock, consistently, and have a sense of humor I really enjoy… thanks for all of this 🙂

    I was lucky enough to see The Darkness in The Spirit Store in Dundalk some years ago, which was a brilliant birthday gift from a brilliant friend, who facilitated my getting to have an interaction with you (I doubt you recall, but it remains one of the best birthdays as a result) and you gave me a guitar pick which I have in a frame with the ticket stub and photos!

    Regarding mistakes at a rock show making them better. I was in Vienna when Dan's pedal board gave up the ghost. Justin came over and said 'let me look, yeah that's f*cked'. My mate actually bought the recording of that show from the merch booth for that reason. Great show.

    On the subject of uniforms, you could argue that having a band aesthetic is a uniform of sorts. Each spice Girl was unique, each member of the Doors was unique, Lynrd Skynrd, too. But weren’t they all kind of the different flavors of the same ice cream in the end? They were unique but at the same time kind of the same.
    Btw,
    I absolutely adore One Way Ticket. It’s so over the top, full of great riffs and great lyrics.

    • @Kingofold2112
      @Kingofold2112 Před rokem +1

      yeah you could almost swap out "uniform" for "look" I think its important for a band to have a "look" unless it is their "look" to not have a "look." Personally I think being provocative is the most important thing. Maybe even controversial. Blue jeans and long hair used to scare the masses but not so much anymore...

    G’day Justin. Quick question: When you are touring and you play an iconic venue, do you ever take a moment to think about the legendary bands who played on that stage in the past? I have to assume there must be a little personal thrill in preening on the same stage Freddie stood on, or the Beatles played, etc. (By the way, I just watched Phantom of the Paradise, as promised, but that is a discussion for another day).

    Funny you mentioned Permission to Land. That album was brilliant. The sound and look of the band reminded me of the classic 70’s era rock that the early 2000’s needed. I am a musician myself and my question is what is the equation from stage preforming, say Axl Rose, Freddie Mercury, KISS, to the technical players? Is it more of a fan preference or do you feel there is a real balance
