With this talk Dr Howells reminds me again, that we are more effective in what we do, when we reflect on our inner attitude before an event. That, to change the self through a simple gratitude practice, is to change the immediate environment we work and live in for the better. I read Dr Howells book, Gratitude in Education, last year and practised 'preparedness' before teaching health education classes and nutrition. What was most beneficial to me during those classes was my ability to handle some very difficult situations that arose, calmly and harmoniously. The attendance of participants also increased dramatically with repeated requests for more education. This is not just a theory, I have found this to be an extremely useful practice in my busy, stressful life. Great work, well done and thank you! Stella Ashton

Kerry's talk should be watched by all educators! Taking time to stop and thank prepares our hearts and minds to be better thinkers. Count me inspired.

I totally agree. I've been practicing hardcore gratitude in the last few days, being grateful for everything good or bad that has happened in my life, and I am indeed thinking better. Practicing gratitude is really doing wonders for my emotional well being :)

When you thank, you think better and deeper. It is not an expression of what education is for, rather, it is an encouragement for educators to internalise 'gratitude' as a part of our teaching belief. I feel very fortunate to be one of your students.

I recently took up playing the piano and I thought I'd give gratitude a 'go' in my learning. It turns out that thinking about the gift of music and being grateful for my ten fingers (and for my new keyboard) does in fact create a sense of' 'awakeness' as you suggested in your talk. It is helping me to be more present and engaged in my learning despite the steep learning curve. The link between my thinking and my thanking is becoming clearer to me now. Thanks for this!

The Word "Think" and "Thank" come from the word Thonc!
    Grateful for the insight.:)

    Two steps of gratitude
    1. Feel the appreciation
    2. Act on the gratitude "telling someone about the act"
I have started a gratitude journal for the past 3 weeks. And I already see a huge change in myself and what the universe is giving me. Thanks.

Absolutely love this! I love her voice, I love her tone and I love the thanking idea.
My mantra is Gratitude... not Attitude

After watching this video, I felt inspired to read Dr. Kerry Howell's articles and her book entitled, "Gratitude in Education." She conveys a solid grasp on the role that gratitude can play in helping people to think in a more engaged, focused, and alert manner. Kerry sums it up in a compelling statement, "When we thank when we think, we think better." We need more educators to explore this concept to enhance learning in their students.

When you feel things are tough you need to look at what you have not what you don't have this is the true meaning for myself what "Gratitude" is. Thank you Kerry for your Great passion, truly inspiring. I too am very fortunate to be one of your students.
