I left teaching after 9 years due to being called a "marxist" and "communist" because I taught Fredrick Douglas in a history class in MARYLAND!!! if you don't know, Douglas was from.......MARYLAND!!!!! absolutely broke my heart to leave the profession I worked so hard to enter. After serving two combat deployments in the Marines I just don't connect with America anymore. Sad.

It's amazing, because I studied to teach Social Studies and finding a History Teaching job became so difficult that I gave up and stuck with a different career path. Now, it appears people want to learn less and less about actual history, when it was rather muddy to begin with. People don't want to learn the reality of our past because some of it makes them uncomfortable. But being ignorant to the facts and truth is the complete opposite of how to fix that. When I hear someone on TV or in a movie say something completely historically inaccurate, even minor, I get really annoyed, but when it's serious and extremely ridiculous I get really angry. I also spent most of my life growing up in Maryland after moving up from upstate New York and remember learning all about Slavery and how it really effect our national and state's history. Thanks for spending so much time teaching the truth and facts, and serving in the Marine Corps!

This is reductive. News journalism exists and it operates on standards and ethics. The “motivation” is to report on stories that are of public interest.
Where it gets fucky is when these outlets have to COMPETE with entertainment, because the public (you) does not value quality information, and is certainly not willing to subscribe or pay for it in any way. So this means they have to rely on ad revenue, which means they need to pump up sensationalism and try to capture the dwindling attention spans of over-stimulated Americans.
In short, you are actually the problem more than they are. If consumers REWARDED good journalism, then that is what we would have.

That‘s why psychology recommends to have your goal be „Have a normal and healthy body“ instead of „Not being fat anymore“. Both are meaning the same, but in the second case, your brain only hears FAT.

I think it was Jon himself who pointed out how the media landscape changed post-9/11, in that every news story became a critical, breaking news headline. The drama of presenting events, particularly events involving war, natural disasters, mechanical mishaps, and political intrigue have distorted our ability to differentiate between what's important, what's not, and what's being underserved. Once the corporate boards of major news networks saw the spike in viewership after the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon, they knew that their round-the-clock coverage would be able to keep them on the ratings charts, all while crowing about how critical their coverage is to the public.
I'm of the mind that 24/7 news in the age of digital transmission has made for a reactionary news base. I'm of the age that remembers "the evening news" when a familiar anchor would come out and read the day's events in a tone that could put Mr. Rogers to sleep. No embellishment, just the stated facts, and if it was really important, you'd maybe follow up with morning radio or the newspaper the next day, or wait for any updates coming the next evening. But now it's instantaneous. Now you have to be the first to report so that you don't lose viewers or appear to be falling behind. And every story is carried with equal measure and weight, every headline displayed in the same font, all given in the same delivery. It could be a hurricane landing on the Atlantic coast, or a plane that went down over Iowa, or a statue being removed from it's plinth, or an organized protest taking place in Brazil - all these stories are brought to the public as being critical to note.
Look at what's happening now with the war in Ukraine - hardly anything domestic gets spoken about with the same intensity or prevalency. It IS important, but this hourly update routine is exhausting, because they're turning a travesty of geopolitical warfare into a spectator sport. In the same way that I listen to sports analysts going over the details of trade rumors, or game predictions, or player injuries, news anchors and the pundits they hire to come give "expert insight" are essentially doing the same thing - trying to second guess what's about to happen, or even more egregiously, declaring a victory before one has yet to surface. It's not the way people need to get informed. It's watered down entertainment for political junkies and partisans.

Actually, that happened with the advent of CNN, not 911. That was going on LONG before. The fact is that the news was ALWAYS biased and was never 'news', it was what three or four corporations wanted you to think. That hasn't changed.
Just now in 'the economist' their headline is how 'humanitys fate is hanging on ukraine'. Thats odd that they didn't think that when Iraqis or Afghans were dying. Compare the news from Ukraine with how Iraq was reported. Hell, in Iraq they wouldn't even show soldiers coffins returning from Iraq.
THAT hasn't changed from, well, EVER. Analysis of reporting from the seventies on Vietnam and Indonesia, where the US was providing arms showed just how biased the media is. And it shouldn't be a suprise, news from an empire will of course favour the empire. Romans didn't hear news critical of the Roman empire but about all the horrible things the savages did.
THat of course should not be taken as any kind of comment that lets Russia off the hook for the invasion, I think the attention it gets is how it SHOULD be handled. But Iraq and Afghanistan and places where the US illegally invaded should be discussed in much the same way. To be fair, like Russia, at the time there were the largest protests ever recorded AGAINST the war. It didn't stop the war, but when governments are clearly going against the wishes of their own people should be something the media focuses on, but of course isn't going to.

Extrapolate 2016 to 2020!

There is more than enough stuff happening in the world for a 24h news cycle. But modern media always wants a 'narrative'.
If their anchors cannot get some kind of 'story' from an event - no mater how big it may be - then you're most likely not going to see it.
Just compare the Ukrainian war coverage with the Yemen war coverage. the first can be beautifully spun as a story of heroes. My local paper as it's own segment "What happened this night in the war' EVERY SINGLE morning. I think I have not read more than 10 articles about Yemen in the last 5 years.

They can then sensationalize it and manipulate the viewers into the fear driven ratings system that gets them corporate profits. All the while creating a massive divide in the country that will one day lead to conflicts between neighbors, if not an all out civil war of ideology. Welcome to the Rush Limbaugh model of modern journalism. (I give him credit since he is the one I remember from my earliest inquiries into politics back in the 90's. Trust is essential to everything in society to work well. A growing number of people in Western nations have lost faith in democratic governance, science, and free press, turning instead to conspiracy theories.
The fraying of trust is tied to the rise of the Internet. Believers are more likely to get their information from social media than professional news organizations.
At the same time, with lower budgets and higher competition, they are trying to get the atention 24h delivering things that aren't news at all or do it in a bad way -> besides fake news, it also generates incomplete stories or without context creating wrong perceptions.

I'll always remember "Summer of the Shark" where you couldn't turn on the news without hearing about shark attacks. It started with one dramatic incident that captured people's attention, but then the media glommed onto it. They reported every time someone just saw a shark, and over-hyped everything. Really played into people's fears and made it seem like shark attacks were on the rise, when in reality there were fewer shark attacks that year than average. Stuff like that is why I didn't take COVID seriously at first, until I actually read what doctors were saying. Over-hyped banalities from the news media is so dangerous, but at the same time I feel like it's so difficult to discuss it with nuance because you'll always get the damned conspiracy theorists and the far right folk saying, "see we told you libtard new media lies". Qanon had a bad reputation when everything they said was strictly partisan and niche to Democratic Hollywood Elites, but after finding out and defending Trump's image with Epstein, they sort of dissolved. The amount of energy they put in to uncovering Democrats, if that was applied universally and cogently, then a lot more people would've taken it seriously and not dismiss it like they do with MTG space lasers or existence. that" repeatedly, with vigor, before and after each commercial. Twice as long as they pushed it.

Good one. When watching the news, watch out for the words "could, should, might". When you hear those words, you are no longer watching news. You are being lead down a rabbit hole.

Anymore, it seems like shows like Jon's are doing what the mainstream media SHOULD be doing; discussing important issues after properly vetting sources and informaion.

Jon, I'm so grateful you came back to remind us how it feels to feel at home throughout this all. I missed you, Brother. I hadn't quite realized how much i missed tou before this very moment. Thank you so much, from the bottom of my broken heart, for reminding me that what might matter to me might actually matter.
    WWJD?
He'd do jon Stewart as many times as Jon would consent to be done.
Please don't ever stop making me so proud to laugh until it hurts more than my wasted tears have. ❤
The one of a kind that you are is the one kind of kind I hope I could even just only kinda be someday. If the world keeps becoming a kinder place to be.
