- Hello everyone, this is a video highlighting the electric conversion of a Fiskars StaySharp reel mower. I also modified it in order to have a back and a front cylinder.

When you put the rear wheels on your Fisker mower. Did you reattach the tension spring. I’m having a very difficult time reattaching it. Actually is it needed?

Not electric as I prefer, but I'm dumb and lazy. Well, if there was a wider manual reel mower, maybe I would try that.

When you add electric motor does the pushing of the mower also help to turn the blades and the electric assist...or once you go electric is it all electric.
So was the larger sprocket too fast? How is the grass cutting now vs before? Any difference?
How did you get the set screw on the back sprocket out? I’ve sprayed it and nothing I do will loosen the set screw. It’s a standard threaded screw correct?

Probably a silly question. I'm not mechanically handy... what are the specs for the longer bolts you used to attach the motor mount?

This is very useful! Working on the same thing and just bought the same motor after figuring out a 12V gear motor was too weak. I was planning to power the system from two LiFeP4 batteries. But i have a 18V battery lying around and will try that seeing you did so. How is that starting torque? Does it have enough torque to go through moderately dense grass?
Thank you! As long as you have this type of gear ratio (bigger sprocket on the reel blade, smaller one on the motor) you’ll have no issues with torque. I’ve tried mowing my backyard at 2.5” with the front wheels on and I also mow my frontyard often at 1”. Both are pretty dense and the mower doesn’t bog down whatsoever. With the gears reversed, I was getting a lot more speed at the reel with the same power output, but the mower would bog down as soon as it hit thick grass. Hope this helps!

Where did you source the black motor mounting bracket?
Did you have to drill the center of the rear wheels to get the half inch bore holes big enough to fit on the shaft?

How many minutes do you get out of that battery with the 24v motor? I might try your setup with my Milwaukee m18 batteries, I have 5 and 9 amp batteries.
I’ve done 2 passes on my front yard which would be a total of 6000 sqft, about 40min. It was still going strong at the end! 5ah and 9ah will give you plenty of juice, the battery I use is a 6ah one.
Great design on the rollersGo battery! Very little output needed. A BLDC motor that could utilize a battery platform you already have would be plenty strong. Capacify shouldn't be an issue either at 4ah or better.

Great video. I am stuck at removing the rear chain sprocket. Just way too hard with all tools I have tried and generous amount of wd40. Any suggestions? Do you happen to know the rear 26 teeth 4.25" outer dia sprocket part number. I might as well order one for my project.
I used a prying bar to leverage between the sprocket and the mower. Then I hammered the top of the prying bar and rotated the sprocket a few times in order to pry it out evenly. It will eventually come out, it wasn’t born there 😁

I purchased a sprocket for the motor that fits the Fiskars’ original chain. The link is in the description. It’s a direct replacement for the sprocket that comes with the motor
In the link is a 9 teeth sprocket but in the end you said 12 teeth sprocket. Which size should we get without breaking the chain?
My bad! It’s definitely the 9 teeth sprocket + the original chain. Then I just added spacers on my motor support to raise it which made the chain have just the right tension.
James, Did you use bearings inside all the rear wheels? The stock wheels have hidden bearings, but the after market ones don't!
No bearings! Not necessary
Can you recommend a larger sprocket to fit this motor?
What is the part number for the sproket weld-on hub and what is the bore size for both, the hub and the sproket?
Did you figure this out? And how did you get the original sprocket off the motor shaft? I got the nut off but the sprocket seems difficult without damaging threads.
Great upgrades! Do the wheels in the back do a good job striping by themselves (if you didn't also use a front roller)? I have a PVC dragging behind mine that stripes but would rather just add wheels like you have if it works just the same. Looks like they are standard 8 inch wheels. Thanks!
Thank you! Yes the wheels in the back stripe well just by themselves since that’s where the majority of the mower’s weight is applied. The front roller just helps to define the stripes even better and to avoid scalping when mowing at 1” or lower. The wheels in the back are indeed standard 8 inch, in the case of these, I just had to open up their inside bore since the Fiskars’ axle had a bigger diameter. Hope this helps!!

@@DRTOLLZ sorry just replying to this now! Mowing at 3” you definitely want to avoid having a front roller. It will just bend the grass down and prevent the mower blade from cutting it properly
Hey James, late in the game here. Just getting into reel mowing and just bought same fiskelars reel mower and wanting to do the same, the adjustment is not compromise with all the mods? i wanted to do the cutting at highest setting.
And I wanted to use my 40volt ryobi battery since I have the mower and the string trimmer and the leaf blower already. Do you know or anyone know what is the best type? Thanks.
Does putting the larger gear on the blade shaft stop the mower from bogging down?
It definitely prevents it from bogging down as much. Mine is bogging down a bit this year, but the motor is only a 20v one and the lawn as gotten very thick with the applications of PGR. If I were to do it again, I would use a 40v motor (more voltage = more torque). Having a bigger sprocket on the blade like I did also increases torque substantially.
Great video! I would like to try converting a used Fiskars but prefer corded instead of battery. I don't mind using a 100' orange outdoor extension cord. I've been using an electric rotary for decades. But I am not a techie. Any idea what AC motor specs I should look for? Or just use a DC motor and connect it to a high wattage laptop adapter connected to my orange outdoor extension cord? Thx
I would just replicate the setup I made with the DC motor connected to a laptop adapter to keep things more simple. Just be careful with that extension cord in front of the reel! :)
If i may chime in, we all have old/broken power tools laying around; circular saw, drill, shop vac, etc. If you want to keep your costs down, you may want to repurpose the motor off any of these for testing purposes. Anything with 5 or 6 amps or more and at least 2000rpm operating speed will do...

How did you remove the original rear sprocket? I removed the set screw but it will not bugde. The front sprocket came off very easy.
Give it a little love tap with a hammer and some kind of chisel.

This may be a newbie question but where can I find those metal brackets? Is there a term for that? Metal struts?
The sides are galvanized steel mending braces (the straight ones), the one that bends to the top piece is a corner brace, and the long top bar going across with the tons of holes is called a slotted angle.
Hey James, Thanks for your video. I’m making my conversion based off your design. I’ve sourced all the parts that were not listed except for the 2 shiny black brackets used to mount the motor. As a temp fix I cut the left overs of the horizontal angle bracket in to two pieces but I’m not sure it is thick enough to hold the motor like the brackets you found. But I have watched you video several times and like the simplicity of your design best. Would love to see an update video if any other modifications were done. Also noticed you don’t have the push to start attached from the controller. Any reason why? Thanks again..
Hello! Glad to see that this video is being helpful! I plan on doing more videos, but the season hasn’t started yet here in the great white north. The lawn is still waking up from dormancy. I modified the cable management a bit to make it look more finished. I plan on modifying the support as well and use only 1 sheet of metal molded to the mower to make it look more stock. I just don’t use the push to start switch because the one that came with the controller broke lol. I’ll be adding another one soon so I don’t have to adjust the potentiometer all the time.

Would it be possible to do the rear wheels while keeping the original reel drive mechanism intact (no motor)? In that case would I only need 8 or 9 wheels? Do you think it would work ok?
The problem is finding wheels with the same diameter as the stock ones. I couldn’t find any. If you can, it can definitely be done! Striperman has videos on CZcams with a mower where he did that, but he bought all new wheels and just glued the original wheel bearings to them

Also curious on this! I am using a PVC DIY striper that drags behind and seems to work ok, but would rather just use wheels across the back if they could stripe as well.
Did you do anything to get it to cut lower than 1”?
Looks like the front roller replacing the front wheels makes the Height Of Cut (HOC) lower than 1" if the diameter is smaller 👍
How fast is that rotor spinning?
I don't think the rotor bushings will survive high rpm for long, and wear will then cause knife alignment issues.

What is the lowest cut height
I’ve followed this design perfectly, but for some reason the motor just bogs down when I try to cut grass. I’ve tried using v belt pulleys and a belt but the motor doesn’t seem to have enough torque to do it. Any ideas? I’m using an 18v 6ah Milwaukee battery although I don’t think that impacts anything.
I would suggest turning the cylinder by hand if it is correctly adjusted. Then I would think off the pulleys if they are correct size and if you are not swapping speed for torque ?
Do you have the smaller sprocket on the motor and a bigger one on the reel blade? As mentioned before, this will your reel less speed, but more torque.
I am working on the same project. I purchased a similar motor with a 1/4 inch shaft. Where did you purchase the weld on sprocket and weld on hub? Also did you move the rear sprocket to the front?

And yes, I used the rear sprocket originally on the wheels, and installed it at the front with the reel blade. This ratio of smaller sprocket on the motor and bigger one on the blade will give the mower a lot more torque so it won’t bog down. Hope this helps!

Doesn't the front roller flatten the grass? Making it no good for cutting?
So I have a similar setup as yours, but my motor keeps bogging down as it encounters literally any type of grass and I have to run the speed control all the way up to 100%. I'm using a Dewalt 20v 6Ah battery with the 24v motor. I'm just wondering how tight the chain should be because I feel like it's so tight that it can't power through both the tension on the chain AND the grass.

Thanks! I took this idea, improved it greatly, then made an AI height sensor that also automatically adjusts the height. Honda, Toro, John Deere, Fiskars and a few other companies are very very interested. I appreciate you posting this - it's life changing, because I will be able to retire at 26 years old.

Only if you install the front wheels and not the front roller! Otherwise, you might need to build a platform frame to keep the catcher from touching the roller

If there’s a chain to drive the blade, yes it can be done. But I think on that mower, the wheel shaft is the same as the blade shaft. If that’s the case, then it wouldn’t work.
I used to have a similar mower to the scott and it freewheeled when you stopped etc… therefore you should be able to attact a motor and have the blades spin faster than the unit going… the hard part would be attaching the drivetrain…
Super cool job you did great but I think it would be a lot cheaper total just to buy like an Atlas self propelled mower that's electric without having to worry about building anything yourself but it wouldn't make the lines as pretty but it would cut the grass if it was a little bit taller better in comparison but nonetheless it looks cool!
Hi, I noticed that your link for the battery has 18v battery while the motor is 24v. Would the 18v battery able to work well with that 24v motor. Thanks alot for your contents!
Yes, no problem in using an 18v battery on a 24v motor. The opposite (example, 40v battery on a 24v motor) could cause for the motor to fail more rapidly though. No issues with the setup described on this video though, going on 1+ year!
James, the gear at the reel shaft in your video is the larger than the one that originally came with the mower at the reel shaft prior to the modification. Did you use the larger original gear from the rear wheel shaft and put it there? Thanks
@@VMH. I had to buy a different sprocket from amazon for the motor, that works with the chain. I believe the link to it is in the description. As for the sprocket on the reel, I used the one that was originally on the wheels.

Hey there. I am getting ready to do the rear roller mod. I was looking at my mower tonight. To get the rear axle out I would just need to take the cover off, break the chain and then loosen the set screw that looks to be a hey key. Is that correct? I also have an 18" conveyor roller on order. I may not be able to wait and may build a custom roller until it gets here.
Hey Sean! Take the chain cover off, take the height adjuster off and just pull the small sprocket on the reel blade off. The chain should come right off, I never had to break that one. You can also try pulling the big sprocket off instead of disassembling the height adjuster to get the small one out, but it might too tight.
@@jamescorreia6944 awesome. I am going to play with it today. I am either going to buy lawnmower wheels for the rear axle or I am going to attach my big league lawns striper to it. I also ordered a conveyor roller for the front which should reduce the cut height by quite a bit.

@@SeanGallianSoulAu the wheels from the big lawn league striper won’t work because they have a very small diameter, so the bed knife will be scraping on the ground. Get lawn mower wheels instead

where do I find a mount for the motor that connects it to the steel bar? the screw holes are too small and it also does not align with the holes on the bracket
You could always mount a wheel in each end of a piece of PVC pipe.

Great work James. Am not very mechanically gifted to do these modifications myself...but you never know. Am looking for someone in Perth, who can convert/combine the Fiskars StraySharp reel mower with the EGO battery system with the telescopic handle...similar to what Allett have done on their Stirling series.

I know the front roller is going to push the grass down as you move forward and lay it flat
and it will not be in a position to be cut by the cutting bar
Other cylinder mowers in the UK, such as Allett - after the mower passes, the front roller
Theres a second brush roller behind the front roller that spins in the opposite direction to the blades so the idea is it brushes the grass to stand upright to be presented to the blades for cutting
There’s another mechanism where they use a comb, in situ, just to comb or rake the grass to the upright position behind the front roller
So I wonder if you could convert your front roller to a brush and figure out a way to get that to spin in the opposite direction …..

love this idea, but yea the roller on the front doesnt make any sense. yes the rollers in the back are for laying down the grass and adding that nice stripe.
Front rollers are so you don't scalp on uneven ground, keeps it level

excelente video. Peguei um desses ontem usado. kkkk ate que funciona bem mesmo sem o motor. Peguei usado e diferente do anuncio, estava bem detonado hahahaha. Tive que amolar e ajustar. E esse mower eh bem chatinho pra fazer manutencao e ajuste na distancia da bed knife to the blades. O Earthwise eh muito mas muito mais facil. O ponto principal da dificuldade eh que o eixo tanto da lamina quanto das rodas de tracao sao 5/8 (ou por ai ) e isso passa do hammer drill que eh 1/2''. Tive que girar a lamina manualmente ate nao aguentar mais. E o parafuso de ajuste da lamina que fica atras da roda numa posicao pessima pra ajustar, sem contar que a rosca que segura do outro lado gira em falso. pqp.
Olhei os precos do motor e do controlador, bem em conta. Soh nao sei quanto ao suporte ainda. E se sera uma enorme vantagem no corte. Qual diferenca vc viu? Eu nem chequei direiro a qualidade do corte, soh cortei a grama duas vezes com ele.
O que me interessa ate mais eh alterar as rodas pro polo. Ainda meio perdido nisso.

O corte é muito melhor pois a lamina vai rodar bem mais depressa, nao faz aquele efeito washboarding. Para afiar a lamina eu usei um drill com uma chave de 5/8, foi impecavel. Avisa se tiveres mais alguma questão!

Why has no one put a gas motor on this? Would it work? I was thinking make a mount bracket like you’ve got and mount the motor on that. Like a 6.5hp predator engine or something similar. I imagine a horizontal shaft would be necessary/easiest. It’d get the reel rolling at a speed you couldn’t match by walking. I haven’t seen ANYthing online like that but I still don’t think it would be difficult, even if just for experimentation purposes
I looked into the possibility, I just didn’t want to mess with having to adapt controls to start the motor, engage the blade etc. It would also require a more robust mount, but it’s definitely doable!
@@jamescorreia6944 I might have to experiment, I want a gas powered but can’t justify the price haha. But a good used push mower with a small 4 stroke motor and some custom fabrication might be just the trick

Hi James, I did this exact conversion based on your video, it was extremely helpful, thanks a lot for sharing!
Not sure if you faced the same difficulty, but looks like the sprocket on the reel is not fully parallel with the body of the mower which makes it a bit "wobbly". The chain line therefore is not straight so whenever I turn up the RPM or hit thick grass, it drops the chain.
Would you have any suggestion for fixing this?
I would have to see a picture of your conversion. I corrected that by using a support bracket with rectangular holes so that I could move the motor if necessary. This allowed me to adjust it so both sprockets are perfectly aligned. Hope this helps!

The chain line itself is straight, the problem is that the lower sprocket (the one connected to the reel) seems to have a little play, even if I fully torque down to screw that attaches it to the shaft. It moves ever so slightly, but its enough to break the straight chain line.

Andras, how do you remove the original sprocket off the motor? I can get the nut off but not the sprocket.
Could you just use the two sprockets that are already on the mower? Put the small one on the motor and the big one on the wheel. That way you just keep the same chain?
The sprockets don’t fit the motor. The other one was from the mower, and the chain I ended up using the original one as I show after.

@@dexterstanley4185 It was still holding strong just as in day one, but I gutted it and converted it again with Ryobi hardware. Telescopic handle, Ryobi’s 40v motor and battery system. I’m still tweaking it and I’ll finish it once the season begins again here in Canada. The plan is to have it self propelled with a second motor… Another video will be released in a few weeks 😉

@@jamescorreia6944 the average plane is more of a smooth flat plane then rocky undulations. Thats how it is on the expensive mowers. I have one but until you level it with sand the risk is too high to damage 800.00 reel and bed knife these are very cheap by comparison
I’m guessing that you’re talking about the yard becoming more levelled? I don’t intend to go below 3/4” at least for the time being, but I do plan on levelling more with sand. I also have an Allett Buckingham 20H that I use in this yard with no issues so far. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate!

At the end I explained that I ended up using the original chain. Just get the 9T sprocket from Amazon, it will match the chain, I posted the link on the description

This is absolutely awesome but I would HAVE TO figure out how to get that bad boy cutting at putting green heights. Or at least half an inch.
With the front roller mod that I did, the cutting height range of this mower became 1/2” to 3 1/2” ;)
@James Correia Oh nice! I'm curious is this more powerful and better cut quality than say the Sun joe 24v battery reel? I just recently bought one. Waiting on growing season to see how it holds up. 1st scalp looks pretty good. I will eventually get a real REEL mower just hard to spend that money for only 2500 sqft of grass. Instead of hot gluing a bunch of crap on that poor little mower🤣 the reason I say this is you paid about 300 for that fiskars mower... you could of bought a good used mclane reel mower for about 400 usd ... and would of saved yourself a lot of time turning something into something els... but hey to each his own I guess 🤷🏼♂
I’m in Montreal, so unfortunately there’s no market of reel mowers around here. This one cost me $80 second hand, plus parts etc, about $300 cad. It works very well, it just doesn’t have self propel. I get your point, but for people in my position or that like a little diy project, this is definitely a good option ;)
