  • In the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race, Torben Grael and Ericsson 4 emerged victorious after 37,000 miles of intense competition. The race began in Alicante, Spain, and concluded in Saint Petersburg, Russia. This edition marked Grael's second attempt and final appearance in the race, as well as the introduction of dedicated Media Crew Members on each boat.
The event also saw the debut of future winner Ian Walker as skipper of Green Dragon and Ken Read's first campaign as skipper of PUMA Ocean Racing. A notable highlight was 60-year-old veteran Magnus Olsson leading Ericsson 3 to a surprising victory in the 40-day Leg 5 from Qingdao to Rio.

It’s so cool seeing the vid of Martine Grael being there to hug her dad when he got into Rio knowing that 9 years later it would be HER coming in on AkzoNobel and him there to hug her.

It’s kind of fun watching the “historic recap” sections at the beginning of the more recent docs and knowing you saw the actual footage when that edition’s doc was posted a few weeks ago.
I think the official account said this was the first edition with a CZcams channel? Now we’re getting meta…

Would this be the edition with the most time spent at high *northern* latitudes, between Qingdao, Stockholm, and St. Petersburg?

"guns are a bad idea" according to Kimo Worthington general manager. He says "guns are a bad idea, they're violence and violence breeds violence". He said what happens if you miss, if you're well trained and weapons handling you don't miss my opinion is I'd prefer to have a couple of decent firearms onboard than not have it.
