So fast , 88km 43 kn just sensational to be finally watching the racing.. awesome
Nice innit ! Get a bit mixed up with the commentators saying go left, go right instead of port, starboard etc, but can't blame them for wanting to make things simpler. Downwind has nothing to do with downwind on a non foiling boat !
Gotta luv how all these boats have nationalities tied to them when all the crews are mixed up.
Their all "mates" mate. Too many mate's - in fact would be interesting to see the etymology of the slang 'mate'.
It used to be the captain, so probably like land lubbers calling each other "boss"; so they are in fact all 'captain's' here... every single one of them except of course his lordship Ban Ainslie who is the "principal" ....
These geezers are beyond and yonder in a world of their own.
SailGP multihull top speed record is 99.95 km/h. This is cool but antiquated.
@geoffstrebel2808 looking to see what the AC 75 do in a their best win range + wave state. 18kn flat seas or 22nt sight swell down win..
Isn't this a bit like comparing F1 and drag racing and calling F1 antiquated?@geoffstrebel2808
Interesting that right after they ask about the recumbent cycler choice, we get an example of the possible down side. A recumbent cycler has a lower power output, that could limit the availability of oil pressure on the boat. Less air drag, but less hydraulic power, lets see if they can make it work.
Is like Formula 1 on water, except the Pit Crew chase YOU!
Thanks, LV37.
Even Ben Ainslie seemed despondent at the end. Let's hope he's perked up a bit after a night's kip.
We need to get rid of Ben Ainsley
Ineos has a smaller Genoa on there than AM. I wonder if that is why they were slower around the corners - and out of drills; but had a better top speed. Too early to call, but interesting to note.!!
Actually looking at the race again, that INEOS mainsail also looks smaller - shorter in the foot (higher aspect) as well. It'll be interesting to see what they go for today. Slightly less wind, perhaps?
smaller doesn't necessarily mean slower. tnz have been using smaller headsails and that can actually equal less drag. mainsail alone generates more than enough driving force once they're flying.
Sorry, if you don't mind, what's the phrase, "out of drills" mean in this context? I'm not a sailor and google is failing me for an answer.
@@London755 So the "drills" are a slang term for tacks, gybes bear aways and accelerations. Basically when the boat changes direction (tacks upwind, and gybes downwind). On these occasions, the pressure comes off the sails, and needs to re-establish on the other side. The boat carries speed into the manoeuvre, which you hope will be enough to keep the boat flying up on the foils until the pressure on then appears from the other side.
@@London755 so if you have a bigger sail up front (each boat has a choice of 4 front sails - called genoas), you have more power to accelerate, but then the sail will usually have a lower top speed. The interesting thing to note, is how well ENTZ are doing with a smaller front sail..... that should worry all the rest of us..!
Ineos rock solid, looks like it could handle a lot more breeze than Magic
Keep dreaming. That thing is a slug.
Ineos does not appear as fragile as some of the other boats, which may be of benefit when mother nature raises its head.
Which boats look fragile to you.
@@johnmartin7158 they all look fragile finely tuned boats ,and easily subjected to sudden change in conditions and gearing, but the weather patterns maybe very different in the next two or four weeks.
@@johnmartin7158 Alinghi has broken 2 masts recently.
Nice racing Tom!
Bow and crew shots add nothing.
they should put them in set and have an overview inset for the mark roundings. I'd also like more telemetry.
Ben always seems to make his 1 mistake at a crucial time, that forces him into a catch-up race which never eventuates, I think if they swap him out for someone else it will help a lot.
He felt they lacked pace, which would be ominous. It doesn't look so obvious to me, eg at 4.26 they are 39m ahead, way above their start advantage. After that there was separation, so all pace is relative.
@@firstnamelastname2669 Brittania only managed to hold that advantage for a short time, while AM closed gauge on them by pointing higher. British are well off the pace.
reminds me of Dean Barker. Great sailor, shit luck!
5:44 A commentator talks at length about "the joys" of being able to hear the comms from the skippers, to be able to know exactly what they're thinking. All the time talking over the top of, and drowning out the comms from the skippers, as they repeatedly do during the whole race.
While I'm here complaining, why are they hiding the telemetry from us most of the time?
You have to leave the commentators SOME leeway over and above the layman. Just like "live" news is always delayed by about 30seconds JUST IN CASE ......
wish they wouldn't talk over the helmsmen at every mark rounding when the on-boat comms are at their most interesting
The fun begins. Cool
how go you measure the wind pressure and display it on screen like this? help.
This is not a sail boat race its a computer game. I have raced sail boats for over 50 years been on the Transpac race several times this is the last Louis Vuitton and America Cup i will ever watch
Do you still use an abacus?
definitely need to bring back 12m yachts, much better racing. The racing today is not real yacht racing, even when they go down wind they are going upwind! boring.
americans have great acceleration. looks like they might've optimised for lighter conditions and upwind. ineos looks like they might be better in stronger wind and downwind, but might not be nimble enough in prestarts or acceleration on lift off.
Ineos looks ponderous
Even to my complete no idea eyes AM looks radical
It's beginning to look ominous for the Ineos project - we may be even less competitive than Auckland. We poached the Luna Rossa designer and invested $100 million, and we're no farther forwards?
GBR have looked behind for ages. AINSLIE spent so little time in the 40
@@bradclifton5248Ben Ainslie is 90% of the problem…imo
@@glengee4462Quite telling how Ben said he wasn’t happy happy with the pace of the boat. American Magic looked slippery and quick.
Take it easy. It’s the first race…
@@brendanharvey8004 I think AM was clearly a click quicker, but yes let’s see how the next race goes.
so far every race has been whoever wins the start wins the race
There flying
What ever happened to Yachts as what these things are is anything but ?
Go Team USA!
9:15 Hence the fall, What's happened?
Wind heat maps, how accurate? Do the sailors make use of this technology?
Apparently it's not available to sailors, they still need to judge the wind for themselves.
Can you get rid of the music in the start sequence please, distracting and unnecessary.
Can someone explain to me how it is possible for the boats to reach 45+ knots with a wind speed of 12 knots?
Physics. On foils there isn’t much resistance, so the boat accelerates….. increasing power. Increasing speed - so again increasing power. It is a virtuous cycle. That is why it takes so long to regain speed if they splash down.
They actually create their own wind. The True wind Speed and Angle in combination with the wind and angle that the boat produces by going forward will create apparent wind. That's the wind they feel on the boats. So; the boats don't go 45 knots in 12 knots of breeze, they actually go 45 knots in probably about 50 knots of breeze - its just a very local wind system ;-)
it's all about a particularly 'magic' ratio - Lift:Drag. And note that the boats never sail (not generating forward thrust) directly into the wind, or downwind, but always at some angle (in this case iro 30 deg off into/down); do a bit of simple vector analysis and you'll understand why lift:drag ratios are so important. L:D ratios of > 60:1 are achieved by some gliders, which don't have that pesky viscous watery stuff to deal with (usually).
There is a good video of it. Basically the sail is pushing into the water the foil is pushing against the boat. These “airplane wings” push against each other to propel the air backwards and thus propel the craft at amazing speeds.
Many thanks to all for the explanations.
absolutely awful. is this really sailing in its pure form?
Ainsley🇬🇧 got a right royal Slingsby🇭🇲 spanking. 💪🫲👍
It's a shame to see Ineos looking to be uncompetitive, I would love to think they are sandbagging. Ben has a lot on his plate, a combination of Giles and Dylan might be the best way forward. Giles has made a big difference in the Sail GP racing.
Team Principal, CEO and Skipper ! yes its a big ask to execute all of that well. Prior to the series in San Fran Grant Dalton was insistent that he needed to be on board as it was "crucial for his chief executive's role" he copped a lot of criticisim/flak for that and it may have been an unecessary distraction for the crew and skipper.
Might be quick but the racing is boring, thanks NZ for stuffing the AC 😢
Americans appear to have A Mustang. English appear to have designed a London Taxi
Poms have an Austin Allegro 🙂
Where are these Gods who make these boats?
We're at the pub
@@brentphilp852 😂
The officials changed the length of the course in the middle of the race? How is that a thing?
From the moment INEOS was unveiled I said the Brits didn’t have a chance. Terrible design.
Sail GP, Auckland, New Zealand, 18-19 January 2025, foiling, 50-plus knots, be there or be rectangular..
Is there a chopper in the middle of the course
Where's Kenny Reid? 🥰
Wow, doesn't Auckland Harbour look different.
I think the common denominator in ainslie’s lack of results is starting to look undeniably like it’s…..him?
Rika vs Rita!
America's racing today is just plain boring, bring back real yachts.
all the aussies,
American magic firstly hade a net to cover?
This thicker like isolation materials more likely not legal?
Then a net with structure is easy to cut trough if needed then inches thick plates🤷
American slick fast also without this plates.
At cockpit u see how thick are....
Non è più vela..che disgusto
c’est du vélo, pas de la voile
do these boats use the hard sail tech the catamaran's used in prior America's Cup races ? I also don't see anyone pumping hydraulic fluid.
