  • In this episode of my quest to rebuild a rusted out 1956 Jeep CJ5 into an electric vehicle, I cast and machine an adapter plate to put the motor from an electric Smart Car onto the T90 Transmission from the Jeep.

Oh yeah. It's not easy to accurately make an adapter plate. But it takes real skill and dedication to make one so professionally that folks would look at it and ask "Where'd you buy that?". Most of the adapters I've made over the years to fit part "A" onto a totally unrelated part "Z" have LOOKED homebrewed. OEM doesn't usually have as much angle iron, box section, plate steel, and "Ugly, yet functional" stick welding. :D

I loved this ingenuity. Re: casting with scrap AL... I found a hint in an old casting book to reduce porosity. Basically, if you melt your scrap, then pour it as ingots, a lot of the impurities introduced from oil, grease, paint, etc. will gas off in the open air pour. Subsequent use of the ingots for actual parts really seemed higher quality.

@@JohnSmith-pl2bk Probably? It sure must have helped. I remember the advice was particularly for scrap that had oil, grease, paint, etc. residue like that old skill saw would have had. One thing I defiantly saw was that during re-melts there was far less dross in the crucible. Also I seldom had porosity in the castings.

To break up castings easier, build a fire and heat the aluminum up till it starts to kind of crack. That stage is called "hot short". At that stage it breaks easily into chunks. Also has the added benefit of burning out oils and labels etc so it's cleaner going into your crucible. If you do it at the same time as you're melting it also pre heats the aluminum as well.

Sure, it fundamentally changes what sort of machine it is, but you know what it isn't? rusting away in the woods. And that's good enough for me. Josh Topper and now you: craftsmen, teachers, great personalities, out of the box thinkers, and aren't wasting your talents shilling for any manufacturer sending a sample. The front nose cone over the Jeep input shaft Is there as a bearing retainer and the mount for the clutch throw-out bearing that engages the clutch pressure plate. The seal in it stops oil reaching the clutch mechanism but oil is meant to flow through the front bearing and as you saw there is a return hole so oil does not build up and put more strain on the seal. If the gearbox has a breather some place make sure it is not clogged or pressure build up from heat could force oil past our front seal. Nice work that covered many disciplines that would be beyond me. Love your old machines but allowing for their wear and tear is a real pain.

It's pretty funny: I had a biz doing one off diesel conversions into classic 4x4's, customers would bring my grandpas old tractor diesel, and grandpa's old international scout, and I'd make them an adapter setup to hook it up. So I used to do that, and you and I look very very much alike, convergent evolution man, hah.
I did a 71 Toyota pickup ev conversion with forklift parts, for a personal project, I'd do another ev with this cj2a tractor I'm working on now, but I scored a free 20hp yanmar diesel, so I'm gonna run that till I get another killer deal on some ev swap parts.
