  • I recently found some interesting tools, so I figure this would be a good opportunity to look at what I bought and talk about what I look for.

    Re surface plate.
3 pads not just to stop warping but rocking and wobbling too.
The position of said feet distance from the edge etc. are the critical points to stop warping
OX tools or Rob(can't spell his name) did a video about it.

Weighing the plastic and calculating the density still leaves you with some choices to be made. I learned "the flame test" at school. Burn a corner of the plastic and blow out the flame and smell the fume. Not without health hazards I guess but the PE and PP types are non toxic. I guess the list can be found on the internet somewhere. Teflon is indeed heavy but it also feels slick. It deforms like crazy under pressure. So when you clamp it in a vice for milling don't go for coffee first but start cutting right away. Ask me how I know... Thank you for sharing your adventures with us! Best, Job

I love that chuck. Where I live we have a huge shed next to the local rubbish dump and people donate stuff and they have staff to pick stuff up off the tip face. It absolutely amazing what comes in from cars and boats that people just don’t want anymore, a lot of the cars get driven in, to books ect. I’m always out there looking for things I didn’t know I needed. The prices are not written on anything, you just take it to the counter and they take a look and give you a price on the spot. Sounds weird but it works because it’s so cheap. I picked up a good quality compressor that just needed a capacitor for $10, fixed it for $7 and sold it for $740. A very rare gear shift for $5 which I resold for $650. Bikes were generally $10 and so were lawnmowers. A recent article said that they had found a couple of old German stick grenades and another was an unused rocket launcher I guess from people cleaning out grandpa’s sheds. Tools, you name it, they’ve had them and I have been lucky enough to get some fantastic bargains. Cheers.

You kind of just touched on a very important part of scrounging/repairing old junk on the cheap: know what your buddies need, so if you see it at a garage sale for pennies, you can pounce and hook them up. This makes them happy, and encourages them to keep an eye out for that super rare set of collets for your super old lathe that you got super cheap, cause it uses a funny size collet. Cause at the end of the day, it's about making memories, not making parts, lol.

That Procunier should be nice inside, they're tightly fit & havevseals on the shafts. (Procuniers are 1000's new.)
I found a small Procunier on the side of a Long Island road, next to some gallons of latex, which is what I stopped for.
The tapper was laying between the cans & some misc electrical stuff, in tall grass. Almost missed it.
Opened it up & the cork on the clutch was like new & the inside was pristine clean, even tho the outside looked as bad as your big boy tapper.
I already had a like new Ridgid tapper, so I told a buddy he could have it.
Then Covid happened & taking it to him got delayed for 3-4 years, (not just the Covid, I got cancer at the start of the epidemic.)
I finally take the Pro, a 8-9 pc set of mic's I'd bought for him & a bunch of other stuff.
He died suddenly 11 days later & when a month I went down to see his daughter cause he'd left me some stuff.
I asked her if she'd seen the box of stuff 'cause he was gonna send me 350 to cover the stuff I'd bought for him.
About then her idiot husband pipes up & said, I saw it... it was on his bed, some of the stuff was out.
    Good, where is it?
Oh, I dumpstered it; figured it was junk if it wasn't in his shop.
Don't worry, I didn't choke him; they have little kids & he has a job.
THAT is all that saved him, esp when I found out what ELSE got dumpstered. Effing idiot.

My father was director of engineering for a number of plastic companies back in the day.

Do you have a brinell tester?
You could also use solvents to distinguish between acrylic, polycarbonate, etc...

Oooh, that’s a good one. The tapping head is actually pretty far up there.
If I could pick one thing to have fall out of the sky and into my shop, it would be a set of tri-mics. They’re out there, but they usually cost and arm and a leg each, and measure a very small range. I have one that didn’t cost and arm and a leg and measures 1.4-1.6”
A taper micrometer would be cool too.
I’ll have to think on that more.

Nice catch... Was going to post my own vid on my latest scrapyard rummaging loot, but i got all pissy about some mistakes i made and i scrapped the footage... I`ll have to go over my loot at one point and show some stuff... Guess i`ll get to it at some point... Just recently ran across a nice condition surface grinder on the scrapyard, but i can`t take it, i`ve literally 0 space... if i had my shop set up, i would pick it up for reparations and re-sale... As things stand, i splashed it with chainsaw oil and wrapped it in cling foil in hopes that it will wait for me as long as i will take, or will be there, well preserved until some other maniac like me comes by and saves the poor thing from the chinese smelters... Oy vey... My golems have failed me... Now i can only lament my current state and hope that shit gets done asap; can`t allow such machines to go to waste... Who knows, maybe RotarySMP would snag it off of me... It would be a long shipping distance, but europe is europe, and a decent truck will haul 2000kg like it`s a bag of flour...
Tho, i gotta say, i`ve been hunting for a surface plate for a while, a resto project like this, but such pieces elude me... *jealous noises*
    Best regards!
