Are there any other countries that don't have military forces?
Kiribati is pronounced Kiribas
I think you mentioned all of them.
Well, Japan officially does not have an army, only their self defense forces. However, they are more powerful than many countries' armies
For all intents and purposes, Canada should go on the list. :-)
Palestine
Most of these countries it make sense to have no military. Being a good neighbor and having a defined border helps. Military can be costly
@Θ.Σ.Κ.30 ΙΙ That's exactly why, in a non ideal world (like ours), the only way of keeping peace is being prepared for war (thus, having an army). It would be great though not needing them, but we do as of this moment
@@gpmscosta It depends on the country.
Some countries have no real reason to have a army, others most definitively do.
Norway unfortunately borders Russia since Finland lost the winter war...
That... complicates... things...
We still have for the most part managed to have a *relatively* good relationship with them...
Although relations are definitively colder now then they used to be...
Indeed we probably had a better relationship with the USSR then we do Russia today despite being a NATO member, both back then and now...
Canada has a small military for a country of its size economically and geographical, since the US would realistically defend it from an invasion in a realistic scenario.
@@speedypichu6833 True, Canada depend on US military , UN and NATO for the most part for defending it's borders. Risk of another county attaching Canada is very low. Even internally there are no major conflicts, so military spending economically doesn't make sense, personally, I wish our military had some modern equipment
@@speedypichu6833 True but most of the population is near the south east

Love the video! It's always nice to hear things about my country (Costa Rica). Just one small clarification, Oscar Arias Sánchez was not the president of Costa Rica when the army was abolished (he was president from 1986-1990 and 2006-2010). The president that abolished the army was José María Figueres Ferrer

If you have interest in improving your English, "corps" is pronounced like "core", and the past tense of "seek" is "sought". Of course, much appreciation that you make English videos. Also, notably, "Kiribati" is pronounced "KEER-i-bass". (I'm not certain how to pronounce Liechtenstein, but I know it's not like "leash"--EDIT: actually I'm wrong. Thanks you commenters below.)
It;s LEECH-TEN-SHTINE with a gutturl CH as in the Scots word loch.
In generic non-english alphabet: Kiri-bass and Licht'n-shtein.
(From the perspective of non-english natives, english-speakers pronounce ee like i, and i like ei or ai)
Also "Nao-roo" not "Na-u-roo"
@@athirkell Idk if you're German, but I as a German can tell you that only very few dialects pronounce ch as sh. Most Germans would pronounce it like the h in hue. Some southern dialect, especially swiss ones would pronounce it like loch.

I love how the Prussian March song is playing at the end of the video.
Me too, mate. It's always a pleasure to listen to this song. I couldn't have missed it since I'm a big fan of Prussian March songs. A great choice for an outro song, I'd say.

When the countries with no militaries are also one of the most peaceful countries.....
Yes, but also. Many of the countries invaded by Germany or the Soviet union had very small armies (Norway had tried to disolve their army in 1929, Denmark surrendered in less than 6 hours, the baltic states were pretty much in the same state and Luxembourg well, just got overrunned wothout much fighting afaik. Also, both the vatican and San Marino were attacked by german troops retreating from Italy in 1944). So Europe, after experiencing two wars just utterly destroying their continent, realized they had to keep a large army because one aggressor can take down dousins of pacifist countries. Latin America has been fairly lucky not having had many wars, due to USA interviening in their back yard; although atleast two wars come to mind (the war between Paraguay vs Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. And Chile vs Bolivia and Peru. Though there have been many more, like the Chaco war, the Acre rebellion, the Ecuador-Peruvian war, the football war, and alot of rebelions in Mexico). And same goes for the pacific. Those small countries are basicaly american protectorates and thus live under their shield and protection, same goes for Europe. There's a reason like Tannu Tuva isn't an independent demilitarized country, or Bahrain, or Brunei, or Singapore, or Burundi (although Mauritius and the Sechelles being demilitarized kinda surprised me, but it makes sense being so close to both british, american and even french protection (and India never really being a threat to them).
Although the world would be great if there were no armies or wars!
And those countries don’t because they can usually rely on allies looking out for them
Dr Hooves that might be true what you said.😁🐈
@@sofiaormbustad7467 Denmark did have an army in WW2 though

I found a coincidental fact - Iceland had no official army since 1869, which is the same year Mahatma Gandhi was born and Vatican city became independent with no army in 1929, which is the same year, when Martin Luther king jr was born lol. ( The similarity is that both people stood for peace and these country with no army also meant they stood for peace)

Very educational.
I really find it awesome that a lot of small countries like Nauru are protected by bigger countries even when the bigger countries could just not carr
because they help them indirectly like by being tourist destinations and making money instead of USA's rivals like China and by, for example, giving access to the seas around them

In 2021, the US returned to the airbase and currently use it as an airbase for stealth aircraft. This is due to tensions with Russia escalating along with Iceland's strategic position in the artic.
Don't we also have Thule, Greenland?
@@xxxBradTxxx Yes but the US has always had a presence on Greenland since the start of the cold war.
@@TheConflictLibrary I just looked it up, apparently Thule is now operated by the United States Space Force since last year.
@@xxxBradTxxx Yeah. The US has had missle scanners and radar outposts on Greenland since the cold war, operated by USAF. But due to the creation of space force, it changed hands from air force to space force.
Costa Rica does have a small Special Forces Unit, the Unidad Especial de Intervencion (UEI) or Special Intervention Unit, an elite commando service which trains with special services from around the world, but is not part of the main police service. Which you did elude to. Enjoyed your video 🤙

Even the Vatican had a substantial army which fought in many wars -this was when the Papal states occupied about one third of Italy(until the 1860's)The soldiers were often mercenaries usually Swiss who were considered the best fighters. They remain today with largely decorative and ceremonial functions as the Swiss guard whose outfits were probably designed by Michelangelo.
I love the movie, the Mouse That Roared. I often wonder what Europe country that was depicted in that movie.
I like the picture of the Norway armed forces, one special soldier is featured ;)
Although some countries do not have them, there are more militaries then countries, as all 50 US states have their own National guard units, with some autonomous zones in other areas having them too
I think they are all under the National Guard of the United States classified as seperate organizations?

Iceland does have a coast guard which forms the entire military and acts as the de facto navy and Air Force
Liechtenstein pronunciation teleported me to the Mars.
Fun Fact: New Zealand has steadily reduced its military since the 1980s itself, instead relying on defense agreements with Australia more and more. So any countries which have defense treaties with New Zealand, basically rely on Australia for defense too, even if not directly.
Fun Fact: That Penguin is Nils Olav who is the brigaider of the Norwegian army he lives in Edinburgh Zoo and was knighted by King Harald V of Norway!
**reads title**
This will be very useful thanks for this video!😎
I've only heard of Costa Rica, Grenada, etc, etc, etc.
Hi. You forgot that Japan has only a limited Self Defence Force and relies on the US army bases in Okinawa. There’re discusscusions around changing the article 9 in the constitution (the article that says that Japan renounces armed conflict and will not have army) or redefining it, but as far as I know Japan still doesn’t have a proper army.
If anyone is wondering the penguin is a Brigadier in the Norwegian army and he lives in Edinburgh zoo- I don't know how or why but thats the situation regarding that.
Also, a couple of them nations you mentioned don't have a standing army because the British Army recruits them.
Fascinating video even with some somewhat eccentric pronunciation on the odd occasion

Would be nice if it expounded upon how the countries prosper without an army with a few national emergencies or such
most of these countries are protected by other countries
I am from Norway and ye we have a penguin in our army
The only penguin outside a zoo that lives in the Northern Hemisphere!
I don't know why but every time I hear his voice, professor comes to my mind
Pitcairn Islands would be another. It's a British Territory that is like halfway between Australia and South America. The UK is responsible for their defense. In population in 2021 was 47 people, so it wouldn't be easy to establish a military force.
not a country
This is the type of military when they said “military grade steel” on ads
Iceland:No army
Also Iceland:it's in NATO
and it was part of the Coalition of the Willing that invaded a country thousands of miles away based on lies.
The Icelandic coast guard has been involved in at least 3 conflicts with UK.
Let's not forget the Cod Wars ;)
The Icelandic Coast Guard even had a special weapon deployed to stop UK from fishing in Icelandic waters.
Also at the end of the conflict (which Iceland wun all the time) Iceland got all its demands and now every nation that has implemented what Iceland wanted for themselves. More info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cod_Wars
Just want to point out a pronunciation mistake: Kiribati is pronounced Kiribass

Just in case: Oscar Arias was NOT the president of Costa Rica during 1949. He was 9 years old at the time (considering he was born in 1940). The de-facto president at the time was Jose Figueres Ferrer.

Kiribati is actually pronounced kiribas despite how it's spelled
It always catches me a little off guard the way people pronounce St Lucia. Before recently, I'd only heard my mum, someone who studied Scandinavian languages, say it, and she pronounces it like "Santa Louseea". Not sure if this is true for other Scandinavian language speakers. Only recently did I hear the "Saint Lusha" pronunciation.
Here in Mauritius we don't need military because pre independance UK would have send their army and post independance, India.
