It was made at the end of the '90s and still watching it today, feels like it was made with passion , dedication, and huge respect for the veterans that survived or the ones that have died. This has probably been cleared up, but just in case anyone is curious the Commissioned Officer Ranks in the US Army (in ascending order) are: 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General, General.
    Those are the ones that really matter. Technically General of the Army is a 5-star General Rank above General (4-star) and even then there have only ever been eight people given that Rank, (three Civil War guys, four during WWII, and one during Korea) and finally a 6-Star General of the Armies of the US which has only been awarded twice, one to John J. Pershing who was the lead General for the US during WWI and was awarded to him later and the other was posthumously awarded to George Washington himself as it was decided at some point that he should always be the most senior military officer in the USA.
    During WWII the Enlisted Ranks for the Army were very slightly different than today and were: Private, Private First Class, Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Technical Sergeant, First Sergeant, Master Sergeant.
    Furthermore, there were Technician Ranks that were equal to Corporal (Technician 5th Class), Sergeant (Technician 4th Class), and Staff Sergeant (Technician Third Class) in pay grade and general experience and acknowledgement, but weren't given the leadership duties as their jobs were generally, as they're named, more skilled technical or specialized work (anything from radio technicians and mechanics to clerks and typists) than typical more direct combat, management and/or tactics focused enlisted NCOs -- and I believe Corporal and above are the people that would be the Non-Comissioned Officers (NCOs) back then like it is now, though I'm not certain as it may have started at Sergeant during WWII and I'm unsure.
    There are also Warrant Officers that are a special case that fall between Enlisted and Comissioned Officers in the chain of command, but that is a different kettle of fish and not really relevant to this show much. But basically they're usually NCOs that are given a WO rank by warrant instead of commission due to being very experienced in some area of their job enough to warrant (no pun intended) a higher rank with a leadership and usually training or mentoring role within their focused area.

    • @CitroChannel
      @CitroChannel Před 3 lety +1

      @Octopus Pershing was promoted to the rank equivalent to what is now a 6-Star General. At the time, he still wore 4 Stars because he was the first to be promoted to that level, but was a "General of the Armies" and is considered a 6-star General along with Washington by modern military record. Though Washington still outranks him because by law no one can outrank Washington ever.

    Great reactions everyone. To give you some context about what it means to get back to the frontline, I’ll give you a story that happened while I was deployed to Iraq. Our company conducted patrols in the city every day and night, one of my buddies got his foot hurt one day (non-combat related) and he couldn’t go out on patrol anymore. He had to wear a cast for a few weeks and would see us off everyday. During a bad patrol, everyone was visibly strung out and he saw this, without thinking about it twice he started cutting off his cast and I had to stop him, he was a vehicle gunner and wanted to replace one of us gunners each day to let us rest.
    He felt like he was letting us down and wanted to be there to support us, and I could 100% understand his reasons and would have done the same. It was because I knew what they were going through and I wanted to be there to help them, being in a war zone and so far from home, this was your family, and you’d always want to be there for them.
    Once his foot healed he got back on patrol and we gave him shit about his vacation time-off and being well-rested, because that’s just what we do 🙂 great reactions again!

    Despite BoB being one of the most expensive shows ever made, Damian Lewis (Winters) spoke of changing into their costume in the back of a moving truck in transit between sets. It was not a comfortable experience for them. There was little coddling. They also shot episodes back to back. (i.e. at the same time) The Bastogne forest set was shot in studio (for control) with fake snow and fake trees. Many other sets were built on location in Britain and Ireland. They shot battle scenes in abandoned factories slated to be torn down. They used every trick in the book to save money.

    • @fazsum41
      @fazsum41 Před 3 lety +1

      They didn’t do any of that to save money. They got a huge budget to work with but you can’t just take pyrotechnics/explosives, ammunition, firearms and all the rest across different countries just for authenticity. They filmed all combat and airborne training scenes in England wile scenes mostly in the last episode were filmed in Switzerland. As for the cast, they all agreed and did go through period correct training just for the roles. They practiced how to jump out a C-47, firearms training, combat training and lived like soldiers within the training. Throughout that entire time they stayed in character too. Getting changed in the back of a truck was nothing more then part of production. Production was done in 3 years according to a quick search

    I think it's important to point out that Colonel Sink is very aware exactly what he's asking of the men. When he says he's proud of them, he means it, and he realizes that ordering them to go across the river again will likely result in more deaths seeing how the Germans would be ready for them this time. The reason he's bringing out how proud Command is of them is him basically appealing to their sense of duty. He sympathizes with the men, but as a the CO of the entire regiment it's his responsibility to pass on orders coming down from the top, especially if they're 'bad news' like having to make a night raid, or informing them they're surrounded and have to stand their ground during the Battle of The Bulge.

    In the book by Stephen Ambrose he provides a more in depth reason why soldiers left the hospital early. It wasn't to get back into the fighting or necessarily because they wanted to support the guys, it was because while in hospital there is a certain amount of time you can spend there before you get reassigned to a different company/battalion/regiment and a lot of the guys didn't want to go to was with guys they didn't know and who weren't as well trained as the members of easy. It was more that to prevent being sent to a different group with people who didn't care about you and you didn't care about you would rather leave a little early from the hospital. As for Webb he went into was with a plan to do the bare minimum, he wasn't prepared to put in extra effort, it's also why he remained a private throughout the war declining promotions.

Usually the tracer bullet is set between every 3 or 4 ordinary bullets in the machine gun belt. So when you see that lit up shot going across the air there are 3-4 more between them. In other words, a true field of fire. The tracers just made it easier to aim at your target at night.

    Actually they invaded Russia early summer and had planned (Hitler anyways) to blitzkrieg to the Caucasia's (Army group south) because Germany and now Europe which they controlled were desperate for Oil. They planned for it to be over in a few months. It didn't go that way and they got stuck in Russian winter without proper gear. Napoleon also went in early summer, marched and captured Moscow, but Russian forces just moved and it was the march back that Napoleon got caught in the Russian winter with summer clothing and starved coming out. (it's an over simplification but that is the gist of it)

    • @Shadowman4710
      @Shadowman4710 Před 3 lety +1

      No, you pretty much got it. The main difference between Napoleon's plan and Hitler's is that Napoleon never had any intention of conquering Russia. He wanted to bring the Russian Army to battle, destroy it and then force the Tsar to the bargaining table, as he had done in his previous campaigns (except Spain-which was IMHO his biggest mistake). After the bloodbath at Borodino, where Kutuzov abandoned the field and pulled back beyond Moscow, the Russian army simply decline to face him again and he had to leave. That's where the real nightmare started, as the Russians began picking off his army a bit at a time on the retreat.

    Near the end of the Viet Nam deal, there were stories of Platoon Commanders getting orders to cut through 2000 meters of jungle and set up ambush sites (after which their guys would be smoked and sleeping) and the Lieutenants would just go in 700 meters and dig in. No one wanted to write a letter to the folks when everyone knew they were getting out.

    The team of actors that worked on this actually went to an Army Training Camp and used many similar training methods as those used by Easy Company and a lot of the “detonations” are real controlled explosions with the cast set to run on certain paths as the ground below them exploded. Obviously everything is done safe but they did want to immerse the actors in the environment as much as possible.

    The goal was not to go to Russia in winter! The planned moment to invade Russia was March 1941, but the Italian Duce Mussolini started a war with Yugoslavia and Greece and the Italians got beaten their ass, so the German allies had to intervene on their behalf! This delayed the full scale invasion to late May/June and through the german strategy, the lines were spread out far and thin and Russian partisans plus the first mass shootings and burials delayed the progress further, so they arrived just in late autumn roughly 30 miles away from Moscow, but heavy rains which created a sea of deep mud resulted in no further progress and getting supplies became harder and harder. In December, the cold and snow arrived with the Germans having not the proper equipment to face it, so thousands died of hypothermia and infections... the harsh Winter gave the Sowjets enough time to equip their army with just enough stuff to throw waves and waves of soldiers, tanks and airplanes at the Germans and beat them slowly back, which is one of the reasons for the heavy Russian casualties (estimated 9 Million + soldiers and around 20 Million civilians; around 1/4 of their entire USSR population)
    Additionally, „the Fuhrer“ had beaten France in just over a month in 1940, which they couldn‘t do in 4 years in WW I, so all high ranking military Leadership that offered doubt about an attack on France got replaced so there were basically only „yes-sayers“ in high ranking offices and people that wanted to gain esteem, power and influence no matter the casualties

    Webster's memoir is a great look at his attitude - he could have been an officer but he was determined to stay an enlisted man, do what he was told, and not volunteer for anyone. It's why h didn't do what the others did. It wasn't because he was shirking or anything. The others didn't shun him, he felt it was just different because the others had gone through Bastogne and he didn't.

    The infatuation with super weapons was mostly Hitler. He was the driving force behind huge artillery pieces on railroad cars, stationary artillery in cliffs in France, giant troop transport planes, giant tanks that could roll over other tanks like regular tanks could roll over cars, etc... All impractical. The only practical advanced weapons the Nazis had were V2 rockets, planned transcontinental V3 rockets (too late) and jet engine Messer Schmidt fighters (too little and too late. (Watch a documentary called Nazi Super Weapon's...which I think is still on Netflix.)
    As far as Russia, there had been a non-aggression pact. Hitler decided to break that and open up a 2nd front.

    That whole mission seemed sloppy because the mission itself was sloppy. It was a dumb mission that did nothing of value other than give the Colonel bragging rights. That's why Winters said fuck it to the second one. What Winters did there was some real shit. That solidified his place as the man.
    Lipton was given a battlefield commission to 2nd lieutenant which makes him an officer. It's a rarity for someone without a college education, which is why Colin Hank's character graduated from Westpoint a 2nd lieutenant automatically.
    Not only did regular life stop and women enter the work force during WW2 but Americans had to ration necessities and regularly had to do air raid drills. They were a part of the war effort in ways we haven't been since despite all the wars we've been in since.
    The next episode is a tough one. Ready yourself.
