    I can confirm that you do not want to cut off all of that plastic. Mine broke in such a way that the plastic ‘stem’ came off letting the cable go up into the sheathing. Had a fun time fishing that out with a pair of needle nose.

    I just completed my repair. Your tubing cutter idea was excellent to get a nice clean cut at the back. I however, did not remove the latch assembly.. simply because I didn't want to make another trip in to the house to get any more tools. (LOL). Honestly, the hardest part was removing the left over plastic cable and tightening the allen screws. Thanks...

    Oh yes, this is very common! I recently had to swap this cable/hood release over from my parts car: an ‘05 Civic, to my ‘02. This would have definitely been worth it, to have! I could have saved myself a 1/2 hr, right there.
    On the positive side, the one on my ‘06 Ridgeline broke off a few months ago and now I know I can replace just that piece..
    Thanks Eric O., for the vids on this Hondoo!

Anyway - history teaches us a lesson. 100 years ago drinking was banned in US, but you could smoke. Nowadays, smoking is bad, but you can drink. Possibly in another 100 years, you will drink and smoke, but not be able to eat meat. Or carry guns. Or whoever knows what will be.

    Excellent performance upgrade Eric, should go well with the new engine job. I found an excellent aftermarket replacement aluminum third door latch for my '03 S-10 when the plastic one broke. The crap OEM plastic one was $11 from Dorman and the aluminum aftermarket one was $12 - it was a much higher quality part that I think will outlast the truck, its been on there since 2005 with no issues.

    @SerenoOunce Před 2 lety +2

    Only thing I'd do different is dremmel a flat on the cable end. Give the grub screw a better chance to bite and won't just slip off if it happens to work loose a bit over time.
    Another method would be to drill through the handle, also remove some of the plastic on the cable end and again dremmel a groove at the tip. Then you can lock the handle in with a 'C' clip.

    Hey Eric, Nice job!!!!! a little OCD tech tip, would be to take off only enough plastic for the handle to fit perfectly, grind a flat spot for the set screw and some locktite. A+++

    • @franknewling1139
      @franknewling1139 Před 5 lety +1

      Yes, the plastic shaft is probably molded to the cable. More is better, especially if it has a strong return spring.
      Locktite is good but I disagree with the grinding because the set screw will do its' job just as well or better because of the surrounding pressure of the strands being pushed aside when tightening. Grinding would only weaken the cable.
      I'm about as OC as Eric. If this is a common problem with these, he will probably refine his technique a bit.
      My, Toyo broke the cable, no extra length, so no options. That was fun❗

    Hey, your video is great. I have a 2005 Honda CR-V EX with the broken hood latch release handle. I purchased a replacement part X001RUB2NR from Amazon along with a snip tool and tube cutter. Unfortunately, my hood latch is a past replacement part that has the release hood latch and the mounting plate designed as one piece. And it looked like the hood latch was just glued onto the tip and had broken off.
    Even if I was to attempt to clip off the remaining piece, I couldn't see a way to secure the cable.
    I now realize that only the top cap broke on the vehicle that you repaired in this video. On my vehicle, the front part of the hood release cap along with the stem and the internal cable wire broke off. So there wasn't any wire to work with.
    Thank you

    Mine is down to 3 individual wire strands. It is not a solid piece of wire like yours.
    It's so thin that they break off when I try to grab it with pliers. I'm watching several videos to see if I can find one trying to replace one like mine

    The interior handle you pull to release hood is broken, it's been missing since I bought 2005 Civic. I use a pair of channel locks to pull the plastic bolt that latch was attached too. I don't need to replace cables or anything, just the thing you pull from inside the car that pops hood. That little plastic square piece is all I need.
