  • ALTERNATIVE RANGE EXTENDER: • Tello Range Extender S... . DJI Tello with Xiaomi Mi Wifi Repeater | How to Reduce Video Lag and Frame Skipping. I tested the Tello with and without the range extender to see if it would, a) reduce or eliminate frame skipping in the recorded video, and b) reduce or eliminate lag in the live video feed. Despite the results of this test, I still think it's time to do away with weak wifi fpv. If not 5.8ghz, there has to be some way to innovate a more reliable use of wifi such as what DJI does.

    Nice comparison. Just a little tip. Don't connect your phone to the repeater before opening the app. Open the app, wait until it asks to connect and the connect to your repeater. I get even better results this way.

      I know when I didn’t use ps4 controller it was more reliable, but still not reliable so ps4 controller is not the problem, but makes it worse. It seems to do better with phone and repeater very close and fpv further out, but still has problems

    Very nice. My extender should be here Friday. Like the fact that it does help with the video. You could set up the repeater in the middle of the field, and get almost twice the range on both sides of the field. Great job. I love that line, “I don’t have a lack of ideas, I have a lack of time.”

      Maybe extender may be put on the limit line that extender and phone can communicate scarcely and by this way you can get more and more distances... I mean, because there will be no problem while drone approaching to extender and after drone will have passed extender a new distance would be two times more.. I didn't try but i just guess it

    I bought the Tello and wasn't in love with it returned it for a sky knight. But it's a perfect quad for the beginner on a budget like myself the features are your warranty and insurance. It's also very durable and rarely needs replacement props unless you get rowdy and reckless with it. You don't have to buy anything beyond the drone itself with the wifi repeater being a must have accessory for videos and photos at a distance. (which is not what I bought it for) There's a lot to consider tech wise as well. The further you move away the Tello from the repeater the higher you need to make it go to optimize the signal angle and feed for instance.

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  Před 5 lety +1

      I still fly my Tello even though I have some pretty advanced drones. The stabilization alone makes it great for taking photos with the family and landscapes and stuff. Really good quality.

    Other drone reviewers say updating to the latest firmware on the Tello will fix the video frame skip. If the Tello had GPS and waypoints, I'd definitely get one. However, decided getting the Hubsan H216A GPS drone w/1080p cam (many good reviews); will install x-large zip ties to each leg to add height in landing gear in order to keep the dirt/sand out of the motor gears.

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  Před 6 lety

      I did a video on how to find the release notes for firmware updates. There have only been two of them so far. I wish those firmware updates would have fixed it for me but it absolutely did not and did not for many others. I reviewed that Hubsan as well and gave it a thumbs up. I use it for a completely different purpose from the Tello though. My family loves the Tello. Thanks for watching.

    Interesting video but questions and comments: you may recall I asked about the position of the repeater and the reason was the signal strength drops when placed behind you which you saw in this video. In that there maybe times that the repeater is on the ground and you want to film or fly behind you, you would just turn around and block the signal strength. In addition, I must ask where you are located as it is very hot outside in N.C. now but looks cool there. A final comment, a CZcamsr found that flying a Tello backwards not only improved the distance but also strength which may indicate sensors for WiFi are located in front of drone. He/she wasn’t looking for frame drops,etc but this is also interesting. On the forum this morning I recommended your install video as I used your step by step method yesterday and tested the distance but not height. Keep up the good work. You do good work

I have no money enough to pay more professional drones, so i could get this one and i'm developing it by adding Tello new features like extender. But if you have a good money source i recommend you to buy a Xiaomi Fimi Drone with 8 km range for a real drone experience. I don't know Dji prices in other countries but here they are really expensive. Greetings from Turkey :)

    Thanks for putting this up here. The set up video was very useful as well. I am hoping to mod a similar 2.4GHz extender with a directional antenna pointing up to a hovering drone with a wifi camera onboard. Seems it needed someone like you to just take the trouble to show what to do with these cheap extenders. I would rather fry a £7 extender than my phone! You did an unfair range test, the phone was at waist level and the extender was on the ground? Even blades of grass in the line of sight makes a difference with marginal signals. You do realise the bandwidth is apparently halved when cloning wifi signal like this, to receive and then retransmit cannot be done in zero time.

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  Před 4 lety

      This is an old video and folks have been noting this over and over. This was not intended to see how far the Tello could fly; to me that is pointless with such a small drone that you can't see past a certain point. The point was to show how the repeater improves video quality and removed all that choppiness. I have GPS drones for longer range flights (still remaining in my line of sight of course).

    Thanks for the video man! You are getting so much more distance then I do without the repeater. I've recently bought a new Tello drone, but its range is terrible, especially compared to this footage. I've done a lot of online research to get the most out of it. I have a iPhone X, went to the middle of nowhere, turned off all other radio communication and was flying backwards.
    But still when reaching a distance of about 5 to 15 meters away from the phone, the image starts stuttering and the connection shuts down until I walk back into reach. The footage is just skipping seconds of frames and is very pixelated. On the website of Tello, a max. range of 100 meters is advertised.
    So this is just it? Or is my drone malfunctioning or broken? Am I doing something wrong? I should get at least a little more than 15 meters, right?

      Try redoing the repeater setup. If that doesn’t work maybe the repeater is defective? Not really sure, but most folks get the same results I do or better.

    Could you look into suitable controller for the Tello? So many mixed reviews and feedback regarding this matter. More specifically I'm referring to the Game Sir T1d controller for Android and iOS. Looking at your in depth approach to things I figured you would be able to put this matter to rest once and for all. Cheers and thanks for all the great info on this platform. =)

It works fine, but I actually got used to the convenience of using my phone since the thing is so darn stable. You're going to get a liitle lag with pretty much any bluetooth controller though.

    You can put the repeater in the half zone of that field and then you have double the distance why don't anyone take advantage of the point of a repeater? source --60m--- repeater ---60m--- client

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Erik. I honestly think its ridiculous to fly a drone this small that far. I keep my Tello in close proximity, so I really don't need long range. I have GPS drones for that. My main reason for using the repeater is to improve the video, which it clearly does as you can see. I see tons of folks complain about losing their drones, but they never blame themselves. Flying out of line of sight is one of the fastest ways to lose a drone, especially one this small.

    • @ErikThiart
      @ErikThiart Před 4 lety +2

      @@GadgetInspector fair enough. I live life dangerously (#AustinPowers) my comment is probably a bit bitcy which is wrong, just figured it would be worth mentioning that the upside of a repeater is that you can move it away from you and thus extending the range further. Personally I fly my tello out 250m with the extender and boy does it give you a little bit of an adrenaline rush!!! (ps: love you videos)

    Dear Sir,
    With all the setup of MI Repeater 100% success, and when iPhone is connected to “_PLUS” signal from the MI Repeater, parallel to all of above, when ‘Game Sir T1d’ bluetooth controller is connected to iPhone, once when flying the Tello from the bluetooth controller, when the Tello goes very far due to MI Repeater, will the connected bluetooth controller be able to control the Tello at such high ranges? Kindly explain me this.
    Thanks.

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector  Před 4 lety

      The bluetooth connection is between the controller and the app, not the Tello. So range is 100% determined by the connection between the app/repeater and the Tello.

    Nice wifi repeater mod for the Tello, the dropped frames were the deal killer for me. But now I may have to reconsider, especially with Tello going on sale recently. Hey Ron. I honestly haven't used the controller since I bought it and tested it out; surprisingly, I prefer to fly it with my phone. I can't see why it wouldn't still work even with the repeater since it connects to your phone via bluetooth.

      Nope, it won't help with anything discussed in this video. If you can't stand flying with your phone, that's the main reason to get a controller. It connects to the Tello using bluetooth though, so there's a slight bit of lag. I tested one here: czcams.com/video/aa_LajO8ftg/video.html
