skillup, love your work but your way off base with xbox. Gotta get outa that 90's console mindset it's 2024 and the console market has been stagnate for over a decade. There is no growth in the console market. nintendo will be fine but both sony and microsoft need to adapt to grow. It's been plastered all over financial news for 12 months. Add the EU digital act and the Apple case to the mix as well. The future will be storefront exclusives, both sony and xbox's storefront will be on everything. Consoles will be loungeroom pc's.
Still no mention of SBI? I waited to see if you would talk about it since it was so big, but I guess you're worried about getting blacklisted. With that being said, I have to unsub. This was my favorite channel to watch for gaming news, and if you can't report on all major gaming news, then this channel is no longer for me.

The Joker just doesn't feel right mowing people down with conventional weaponry. He's never been that kind of villain. He does mid-level crimes to lure out Batman and psychologically mess with him, testing Bat's no-kill ideologies, etc. But he doesn't go around just blowing people away with guns (maybe a revolver at most).

yeah, kinda hard to avoid when you are attached to Microsoft and are the least productive branch of Microsoft at that. I'm sure he has someone staring daggers in his back at all times.
Not really seeing that a good game with some decent content to keep people around.
And most of all, it's fun to play. Their is a mountain of games with horrible stories, varying art styles but the gameplay is what usually carries this stuff.

Reminds me of "the big short" where the guy who shorted the 2008 stock crisis actually had all his investors demanding their money right up until he was proven right. Most investors have no idea how to actually be successful and are playing politics with the money instead.

@@ichibi87 The double speak won't end because it's not profitable for it to end, coming out and saying the Xbox strategy has generally failed and isn't growing so we're going to phase it out over time would make majority of Xbox users start selling their stuff and cancelling their subscriptions. You saw how just the leak of some 3rd party games had sections of people saying they were getting rid, so you need to keep them on board while you move slowly towards that end.

I think AAA studios have reached critical mass; the push for growth and share holders crushes what makes games good to begin with. I think we're on the edge of seeing the giants fall, and seeing the smaller studios begin to grow and eventually replace them.

The sad reality that most have yet to learn. We should be tracking the names of developers and designers more than the studios they are tied to.

Bioware died w Inquisition and Anthem for me. I played Mass Effect 3 maybe four or five times. I met David Gaider at gaymer x2, really sweet guy but I don’t think he’s there anymore either lol. I miss em but what can we do? Everything changes

Imagine if Suicide Squad was a narrative focused single player storyline. Somewhere between Batman Arkham and Resident Evil. You get to play one or two of the surviving Squad after Waller sends them into a situation they were woefully unprepared to face and you're still forced to keep going for whatever reason.
Whatever reason? Waller threatens to kill you anyway. Suicide squad had always been "inmates you will do this job. If you refuse you die. If you flee you die. If you fail you die. You may also die trying but that's not guaranteed."
Well, I don't know about your plot/storyline, but it should have been a single player narrative story to begin with. Hell, I would have bought it day one even if it copied Guardians of the Galaxy's gameplay and similar approach to story. The moment live service was mentioned, it sealed the deal for NEVER being purchased for me. I won't even claim it in a Humble Bundle or PS+ free monthly games. I won't give them one iota of statistical data to even share they've gained some kind of player base by claiming and downloading. It's sad when a (hypothetically) free title isn't even worth your time or hard drive space.
A little disappointed of no segment regarding "Stop Killing Games", hopefully it'll be shown next week.

I don't know how anyone saw the gameplay trailers and thought a good, thoughtfully crafted game was coming. Harley quin doesn't have powers but is swinging around like Spiderman and taking no fall damage, and captain BOOMERANG is using a sub machine gun lmao.

Lex Luthor, a supervillain known for his immesearuble ego among many other things, praising the Amazons was also funny considering how horribly the Amazons treat men. This game is simply a very elaborate out of season April fools joke that was 8 years in the making.
Yeah it was so bald faced & apparent months ahead of time, I remember being in the subreddit briefly just to poke the beehive a little & saw the usual "I'm having a blast" or "it's a pretty good time for just playing a little!"

I think, every subreddit of any game that is a bit of a trash fire at launch is full of copium. But hey, don't call them stupid, they're often just people who don't game that much or are otherwise ... naive? hopeful? Mostly because they're not the people who watch youtube videos about gaming a lot, if ever. We're in our own little youtube bubble of gamers who are in the know. Sometimes I'm so surprised how little some of my friends of colleagues really know about certain industry developments or just games in general, despite playing a lot of video games. Often times these are people who spend a lot of time on one multiplayer game with the occasional hype single-player release thrown in.
I remember the Starfield subreddit having a similar arc. People were posting pretty screenshots of standing around with a couple planets in the background, saying how much fun they're having or whatever... which then turned into everybody posting, what completely new functionality they wish the developers would add in future patches (oh my sweet summer child, maybe in a year or two, but probabaly never) ... which then turned into a more defeated/occasionally angry "so many missed opportunities" tone. Then it all calms down a bit, because patches and mods turn it into a more polished experience and people become more aware of what the game is and what it isn't.
Eventually the same will happen with Justice League. Either Rocksteady shuts it down in a year or two or they manage a recovery similar to Fallout 76 or Battlefront 2 (2017). We shall see,

Big thing with Microsoft is that they are buying studios/publishers that are having problems but don't do anything really to fix the problems until damage is done. For example, If I was Phil Spencer and I bought Activision/Blizzard, I'd be evaluating each studio and finding out what is wrong with each of them. Because why would Bobby Kotick sell Activision/Blizzard if there wasn't something seriously wrong there (of course Bobby Kotick himself is a major cause of a lot of the problems.
Even Bethesda is a better example, they bought them after the Fallout 76 disaster caused Zenimax/Bethesda to fall into distressed debt. And then left them alone as soon as they bought them...
Like Phil Spencer apologised for Redfall, he said it was a red flag to him when it was announced it wasn't going to be 60fps on XBox... not the fact studio lost over 70% of its staff during development, or the internal QA reports were terrible. No his only red flag was the 30fps wasnt up to XBoxes mandate, so did he do anything about it. Nope!
When the PC preview also got flagged, at no point did he follow up on any concerns he or management or the games media had for the preview. Even after its disaster release did he do anything to follow up that empty apology to uplift the game or refund customers, or change the direction of the studio. NOPE. He left Todd Howard alone to screw up Starfield's release too.

Not really, the problem is that they pick up these studios mid or end production on games and then don't really have much ability to input on them before release. Not to mention their usual hands-off approach to their studios. Best examples are Redfall and Starfield, which were already heavily developed by the time the mergers finished(keeping in mind the "hey we bought this company" news hits the presses quick but the actual transitioning of studios and developers and shit takes much longer. He did say that they are going to be more hands-on with some studios after their more major failures.
@@Koranthus The hands off approach is a double edged sword for them and they know that they need to change. Some times it produces bangers like Hi-fi Rush, Pentiment, and Grounded, but most of the time it's Redfall.

With the people who made the Arkahm games largely being gone from rocksteady, I really don't see them making anything good in the foreseeable future. Ironically, it seems like the only ones the suicide squad actually killed is rocksteady themselves.
You are right. There was a credits break down, and id go so far as to say zero people from the OG batman games worked on this crap. The studio is simply a shell of what it was.

Unfortunately the main developers of Rock Steady's single player narrative games left years ago and formed Hundred Star Games. There is little to no talent from the original Arhkam games at Rock Steady any more.
As a fan of Banishers I think the Dont Nod restructure is cool, and staying AA is an asset IMO. BUT for the love of god they need to rethink the way they do combat. AA doesn’t mean the combat systems have to be so wonky and ill conceived every time. It’s the one thing that held Banishers back from being a GOTY contender for me. The story, investigations and atmosphere were superb. I actually hope we get something more in this universe, because the concept of Banishers is great.

Just a friendly reminder.. Suicide Squad is $70 and for Season 1 update they give you, one character and a boss battle reskin.. meanwhile, the FREE mobile gotcha game I have on my phone just gave me 10+ hours of new content event and story and some freebies and I didn't even spend a dime on it.
The mobile whales paid for your 10 hours of gameplay. You must not underestimate the insane amount of money grown men will spend on gacha games,.
Don't forget if your not the right level or can't grind...Joker is 10$

I don’t think using gotcha games as an example of something better than suicide squad is a good idea.
I know a lot of people love Phil because of his attitude toward accessibility, which is great, but I can’t fathom having his resources and being so abhorrently bad at my job that I run what used to be an insane brand competing with the best in the industry into the ground. I’m blown away by the terrible communication and lack of understanding in general over what actually makes things in this industry successful.
I think phil pulled xbox out of the grave that was the xbox one launch. But right now the big dogs at microsoft are pulling the leashes tighter and tighter.
Not saying Phil isnt to blame but i just feel like there is more to this than just Phil fumbling. Wont suprise me if he is sacked here soon

Gamepass is killing their entire Xbox brand. Why would anyone buy an xbox if they have a decent pc? That money would be better spent on a playstation or switch.
I miss the business model of "Create Great Game, Buy Great Game." Now we have subs, battle pass, dlc's, adventure packs, early access, expansions, and live service garbage and ads killing the experience. Baldur's Gate 3 should be a wake up call. If someone built a game like Valheim and released in a complete state with no bullshit - it would be insanely popular. There's so many Conan Exiles or Ark players chompin at the bit for a survival game that respects the people that actually want to play it (Light no Fire?)

Skillup doesn't seem to report on the issues Sony has as often as MS for some reason. Granted he also knows that console fanboys will brigade like his video if he namedrops the console they don't like having issues.

Meanwhile Phil keeps doing interviews and sticking his foot in his mouth every couple weeks it seems leading to endless speculation about the Xbox brand. Sony on the other hand is always pretty quiet and you will rarely hear from Jim Ryan or Hiroki Totoki who just took over

Honestly, I don't hate what Microsoft is doing with Xbox. They know, and everyone knows, the Xbox is in 3rd place in the console market, and it has been for 10 years. The next generation Xbox isn't coming out for another 4 years or so. They need to do something different that separates themselves and builds interest for the future.
Honestly, I love the casual side of a console, and if you can run Steam and Epic Games store from your Xbox, and how great Game Pass is, I would definitely buy back in.
You can love something that is logically bad for the business. Bringing other storefronts on Xbox means Xbox losing more of their revenue. Even if the revenue split is changed, Valve, Epic etc. would be fine with it since before Valve/Epic couldn't make any money off of console players and now they can. Anything is better than 0 for these stores. Xbox gains nothing because anyone who wants these storefronts uses PC so they are not going to buy a console.
@@yomamasohot6411 The ulterior motive and long term plan is unknown though. I would not be at all surprised if the console gen after the next is the last in their current format. I can see future consoles not being the hardware thing that actually runs games at all...but an interface device with a cloud gaming streaming service like a Microsoft version of Geforce Now/Stadia. People won't download or store anything, it'll all be run remotely...people will pay a subscription to access it...buy games on built in platforms and stream it via MS gamepass services with tiered pricing based on usage like how Geforce Now do it.
Actual hardware that plays the games could be a thing of the past. After all, they have signed deals with cloud gaming providers, they have their own beta Xbox cloud thing going now...there was clearly a reason the UK CMA had concerns over the MS/Activision deal specifically in relation to cloud gaming. I don't think it's a total shot in the dark to think that's where MS focus in the next decade and a half is going to go.
I wouldn't even worry about what Xbox is doing, they're projected to be number 2 in overall Gaming Revenue after this year behind 10cent... And having a console that can play Steam or Epic games is a great option for those who want to play their PC Sony games/PC only games. It's not that hard to understand unless If you're a bitter sour boy.

just came here to say I beat outer wilds last night, wow just wow, I finally get it I have seen the light and understand why its your game of the year for 2019.
My new fav game of all time!!!!!!!!!!! I played it in VR with the nomai VR mod, ran beautifully with my 4090 and so incredibly immersive. I tried once on flat screen but gave up after struggling in the sunless city just hitting walls and not knowing where else to explore. So glad i gave it another go and really pushed through. The vr mod is real proffessinoal, you have all the tools on a belt and you get to point them with the VR controllers, you control the flash light by raising a controller to your head, flying and space walking are easy enough with the triggers being up and down thrust. God I just want to gush about this game but of course wont because of the spoiler potential.
excited to dive into the DLC, going to give it some time tho, want to savor the experince cause who knows when well get another game like this one

I don't get the complaining angle of Microsoft making their popular titles available on all platforms. More games for everyone to play, where you want to play them. I understand it doesn't help sell X-box consoles, but why care?
For now, i'll chose to understand the Phil Spencer interview as "we're going third party, but we have cool box if you want".

Xbox should build their strength on indies. I look at the Cola wars as an example. Coke is still king but Pepsi competes by aligning themselves with (*edit) celebrities. Xbox needs alignment with a valued part of the gaming industry, and most indies are already on pc (Microsoft) so wouldn’t it make sense to be at the forefront of indie development? Be indie developers introduction to consoles and lock them down (console exclusive games) with a partnership that’s hard to pass up. They could even work with developers as independent contractors (1-2 game deals that may or may not be extended based on value).
Their value proposition could be: “We invest in the future”. This doesn’t mean that they should abandon Double and Triple A flagship games, but it provides them with an identity that could compel consumers to purchase an xbox.
We all know Nintendo’s identity and Sony is carried by it’s ridiculously valuable flagships.
This suggestion also works with xbox’s subscription service. Literally copy Apple Arcade’s business model but apply it to indies. This should give the flagship titles breathing room between each release and allow them to implement delays if maybe their development timeframes are too ambitious. Sell some indies wholesale -> move them to the subscription service after a time -> drop a massive flagship. Rinse and repeat.
Huh, I did discover a few game through Gamepass, that I would likely never have touched on their own, if I couldn't at least try them out.
Might be the best strategy going forward, as I hope they won't discontinue the brand.
The logistic and administration will be a spaghetti nightmare tho. Not impossible but the complexity
could lead to more problem than result.

SBI had a big role in the writing of this game. Their writers said they were proud of it on X! They deleted their tweets a few weeks after launch when a lot of other stuff hit the fan.

When the Xbox first came out, it felt like Microsoft was just looking for expansion as they were doing back then. There was also talk of convergence between PC and TV, so they wanted into the set-top box market instead of letting that be taken by someone else like Sony. None of it felt like Microsoft genuinely cared about the video game console market.
