  • BUGATTI’s 8.0-liter W16 engine has reigned over the world of internal combustion for nearly two decades. It has powered the brand's hyper sports cars into the history books as the only 16-cylinder aggregate in the world.
    As a unique masterpiece of engineering and long since an icon, the 8.0-liter W16 made its debut in the VEYRON 16.4 in 2005, before culminating in the CHIRON Super Sport 300+ breaking the 300 mph barrier at exactly 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h) in 2019.

    The "W16" engine is unique amongst VW Group's family of VR and W concept engines. This is because if you remove every other cylinder, i.e. the "staggered" ones, it still runs perfectly smoothly.
    That's because each staggered half of the engine is its own self-contained 90° V8, which is the real genius of its conception. It's arguably the culmination of the concept, and a real innovation compared with the other engines in the family.
    It is for certain a very elegant and deceptively simple solution that saved them a lot of difficulty in designing a true staggered cylinder V16. In that respect it is far simpler than the "W12" even, despite it starting from an already familiar basis in the VR6.

    • @identiticrisis
      @identiticrisis Před rokem +18

      @@BaioWithMayo whilst technically true, it's not true in the sense they implied. Top Gear at the time liked to mock VW for being staid and sensible, maybe even creatively "lazy". Obviously the entire "VR" concept suggests otherwise, but they had already been around for a while when that comment was made.
      The crankshaft shows that the V8s are merged and interleaved, not simply bolted end to end and given staggered cylinders like the W8. Moreover, looking at the firing order, one of the V8s is rotated and mirrored to obtain the ideal crankshaft torsion dynamics.
      There are some other subtle details like how the narrow angle in each bank contributes to the 45° firing intervals (again reflected in the crankshaft). This one blew my mind when I eventually saw it, and I was only looking because the crankshaft didn't make sense to me as belonging to a staggered cylinder V16, or any of VW's other "W" engines for that matter.
      All these little but entirely significant details came together almost a little too well, and this was either the result of a lot of hard work and failed concepts, or sheer genius. Possibly necessarily both.

      Bugatti sure is a old company... Sure has made a lot of improvements and innovations in the automotive industry... No doubt about that...
      But u ever see what Koenigsegg did... They started independently and without the support of any other major company, just built their first supercar, which actually best Bugatti at their record...
      And that's not it... They kept on building machines that rivaled the performance and records of Bugatti, even when Ferrari, McLaren, Audi or any other "big" companies couldn't do it...
      THAT'S WHAT I MEANT... I didn't belittle Bugatti, I just expressed my admiration for another automotive company that would have definitely rivaled Bugatti's strength, and we could have seen a remarkable battle between these two...

The Porsche Spider is more innovative as a powertrain. The W16 is nower near being the greatest innovation of human history. The vapore engine, the AC current, vaccination, sewer networks, the PN junction (transistors, micro chips, CPU/GPU, LED, Solar cells...) or laser beams are far greater innovations...
