  • In an earlier video (see the link below), I provided a "first impressions" review of the Trek Allant+ 7s e-bike. I now have put more than 350 miles on this bicycle and this is an updated review on my experience. I also offer a few suggestions for post-purchase modifications.
    I am a consumer - not a Trek marketing person and not a favored "influencer." This is my first e-bike. I am, however, a long-time bicyclist (over 50 years) who commuted to work via a bicycle (I am now retired) and continue to do bicycle touring.
    My "first impressions" video is posted at:

    Awesome review, Ed. I have my eye on this model and may purchase one in the near future. Thank you!

    Thanks for the review. I like mine. I went to clips and straps, then back to platforms. When I'm stopped, I lift the pedal from underneath.

      I described this to someone as follows: " It's like crack. Very addictive. Go fast. Hills - no problem. It rolls over rough pavement, gravel, dirt, mud, cinders in the bike lane/shoulder ..." Wanna try it?

      @@edruttledge342 I used to ride motorcycles, so I kind of know that experience. Though I do need to try an e-bike at some point.

    Great review, Ed! Funny enough I’m shopping Marketplace for one of these used and all I can find are the step-through styles in my size. If this bike is a large and you ever want to sell it I’ll make a CZcams video of my trip to come pick it up!

    I have the medium step thru version and love it!

      I have gotten better at mounting and dismounting from this model. But, the step thru design makes more sense!

      I'd like the medium step through but the Allant+ 9.9s doesn't come with that option in the XL size which is what I need. I like my 9.9 but not the rear rack on it.

    Thank you for the helpful review. I am curious on the difference between a class 2 and a class 3 on steep hills. What has your experience been on logging roads or other steep trails?

    • @edruttledge342
      @edruttledge342  Před rokem +2

      A Class 2 e-bike can go up to 20 mph withOUT peddling. A Class 3 e-bike can go up to 28 MPH as pedal -assist (the rider must be peddling). My Alland+7S is a Class 3 unit (up to 28 MPH as pedal -assist). I have found no hill it cannot provide all the assist I could ever want.
      I normally use "Tour" mode in power level. This is the 2nd level of power assist. On some steep hills, I have the option to up the power to "Sport" or even "Turbo" for the duration of the hill. I live in Salem, Oregon and we have lots of hills - some with very steep grades. No problems. Hope this is helpful. Ride on!

    Good review. I have been thinking about an electric bike since my car driving days are over now that I no longer own a car. But I have never driven an electric bike so your comments about the speed and weight were helpful.

      The technology had come along to a point where I thought it was time to try this. I have more thoughts ... I'll send them via email. Be well.

    The 7s had a better back rack than the Allant+9.9s where the rack rails are below the fender. Silly design IMO. I like the pedals on my 9.9, at a stop I plan ahead and have the pedals where I want them, if I have to reposition them I use the top of my foot to reposition the pedals. The 'rat traps' do help in getting better pedal power while riding but to me it's not needed in an e-bike.

    Class 1 2 or 3... Here in Australia we are only allowed to have class 1. Higher needs a licenced rider and the vehicle being registered. I've just bought my first e-bike and I'm thinking... How soon do I need to get to my destination? I want to enjoy the ride. I'm 70 and don't need the speed just the experience.

      @edruttledge342  Před 2 lety

      I am 76 and have been riding a bicycle for a half century. This includes commuting before I retired, long distance touring and club rides. For me the Class 3 turned out to be a good choice. On the road, I am generally traveling at about 22 mph so the little extra latitude in velocity has been used. Oregon has not yet adopted a licensure/registration requirement for e-bikes, but has begun to assess a flat one time "road tax" at purchase - the product of a local Right Wing talk show pundit who constantly railed against bicycles for not paying fuel taxes. The dumass Right always makes up new enemies. Ride on!

    I'm looking to change out my pedals on my Allant + 7S. Can you help me with the model of the pedal you chose?

    • @edruttledge342
      @edruttledge342  Před 2 lety +1

      Good afternoon. Glad to help...
      The pedals were easy for me - I already had them. A well-used pair of "rat trap" pedals. For an example, see: www.cardinalbicycle.com/product/sunlite-classic-rat-trap-pedals-210510-1.htm?variations=43166,43164,43165?
      Then I added strapless toe clips to the pedals. The strapless toe clips give you the ability to lift the pedal into a ready position when stopped (for a light or crossing, etc.) without actually strapping you onto the bicycle. Perfect for a commuting/urban environment where many stops may be necessary [I am retired now, but I used to commute to work in the core downtown of Portland, Oregon). For an example of what I am talking about, see: www.modernbike.com/product-2126242092?gclid=Cj0KCQjw2MWVBhCQARIsAIjbwoP4wsFeyVVWMUPTv5FgqHf8aanDGUTGHsY3YZ4qGfR070H_VrjKc7QaAv9fEALw_wcB
      Ride on!

    The Allant promotional video states the it has “Flat foot technology” which I’m familiar with but I’m sure that’s a mistake as the bike looks conventional to me. Will you please confirm. Thanks.

    • @edruttledge342
      @edruttledge342  Před rokem +1

      Sorry for this delayed reply ... I suppose any current era bicycle has "flat foot technology..." ... Just lower the seat until your feet touch the pavement. However, this will mitigate the rider's ability to use a full extension of the legs when pedaling. My Allant+ 7s is adjusted for maximum pedaling efficiency ... and this adjustment does not accommodate a flat foot stance while stopped and sitting on the seat.

    • @johnbusher6375
      @johnbusher6375 Před rokem

      I only know of the "flat foot technology" on Electra bikes. I had their cruiser and the 'crank' or pedals are positioned more forward than on a 'regular' bike. Made for strange pedaling. action, didn't like it at all.

    Can you adjust the stem so you can ride more straight up?

    • @edruttledge342
      @edruttledge342  Před rokem

      Yes ... and you can adjust the seat likewise. Its pretty flexible as to personal options.

    Hi, what size is this bike? M, L or XL! Thx!

    • @edruttledge342
      @edruttledge342  Před rokem

      I am 5'9" and I was on the margin between a M and an L. I went with L. This makes for an overall larger frame to control, but even at size L, the seat post is extended 6" above the top tube. This would have been a higher extension with an M frame - making for more "top heavy" feel for me.
