It actually makes sense for Teutonic knight to be fast when they run since they always walk. They are like Darth Vader of aoe2. They nerf themselves on purpose because if they ran it wouldn't be fair for opponents. Just walking around like a badass

But thinking poorer nations don't spend money on their athletes or receive massive advertisement money from sponsors is also very naive. Jamaica's runners programme is the crown jewel of that country's sports.

The NHL used to have a legitimate competitor in the Soviet League, but it is now the clear leader in hockey as well. So, it is not unreasonable that the best team in those leagues can describe themselves as the best team in the world.
Also, with the exception of the NFL, the US leagues aren't strictly domestic. Canada has a team in the NBA/MLB (and used to have more), and several in the NHL.

By the way, I must applaud the Japanese and Aztec Champions for their hardwork and dedication, it really shows onscreen. The other competitors seemed out of focus by comparison, taking almost a full second too late to start swinging their swords. Definitely a lack of confidence there, but I'm sure they'll overcome this and I hope to see them again in 4 years from now.
This was amazing. There was a split second when i thought everyone had somehow missed that Teutonic Knights have some sort of short ranged speed boost. I was only waiting for the surprise archery medal for the Saracens (destroying the target) and the Spanish Supremacy Villager winning the cheat code arena 😂
