Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

Something serious was one of the dopest albums ever.,
Fuck Ya. I was just a cat from SoCal, and I was bumping all of the Geto Boys shit, plus associated acts from their camp.
Facts!!!!!
Grown man shit !!! He was on it! Back then. Timeless music
🔥🔥🔥🔥
I wish J prince would do a geto boys album with willie d scarface n big mike with some bushwick bill recordings LOVE THE GBS 4LIFE
I think Big Mike is one of the most underrated rappers of all time. Dude is one of the dopest lyricists I've ever heard!
Hell he is!!!
Boy he was killing it !!!! His contribution to “ Til Death Do us part “ is. Highly underrated
Underrated lyricist. He was cold on till death do us part
Hell yeah
Very underated!
Arguably straight gansterrism is the best song on the album remember playing that song over and over when I brought the album back in 93
Godilla jaquar paw Indeed
Facts!
i remember listening to Big Mike & Pimp C song Having Things on repeat when i was like 10 years old on my cd player doing my homework......I f-ing love that song
Me 2... loved the video as well!!
BOTH versions!
@@Bigg_C-Nile1 You talking about the 06 one too?
30+ yrs later the whole rap game is using melodies like Pimp C did on that hook

Big Mike is one of the most talented from that era. One of my favorite artists period.
It’s a dirty game dealing with these labels! SMH
It ain’t a dirty game, it’s business, when you got a BOSS.
Big Mike is definitely one of the GOATS!
You said it, Aaron Thompson. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
“ Big Mike How Ya Livin?” ( No Nuts No Glory) College dorm anthem in the 90’s
That whole "Till Death Do Us Part" album was 🔥🔥🔥 💯💯💯!!!
I been living out the same dope house since the age of sixteen, slanging crack like.....to these burned out dope fiends...
One of the most incredible songs ever.
Straight gansterrism was a classic track i never heard the convicts album so til death do us part was my intro to big mike
Imagine if Big Mike had been signed to Death Row. 🤯
@@dugnice im not convinced his career would of been better at death row they had alot of talent on the label that never had a debut release oftb and rage come to mind...at least at rap alot he got a chance to release two solo albums in 94 and 96 he may have not got that chance at death row
@@mikegillins4992
He may not have had any greater *commercial success* (increased album, ticket, merch sales) but I do believe his popularity would be greater.
Big Mike's name is rarely mentioned in rap discussions. I think that would be much different had he gone to Deathrow, especially with *"Straight gangsterism"* and *"Crooked officer"* anyway, I'm glad to see this interview. I hadn't seen or heard from Big Mike in years. Good to see he's still alive, healthy and in good spirits, sharing Hip Hop history.
@@dugnice I do agree with the popularity part since death row was the premier label in the mid nineties...he may been featured as well on some of death row top songs and it is good hearing and seeing him all these years later

BIG Mike one of the most underrated MC's in the game this mane was dope from the start and still dope, GOD BLESS THIS BROTHER HE DESERVE HIS RESPECT & FLOWERS WHILE HE STILL LIVING! MUCH RESPECT BIG MIKE YOU GOT MY VOTE FOR ONE OF THE GREATEST AND ONE OF THE REALIST EVER.💪💯💖
Agreed on all fronts, William Sarden. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
Big Mike was my high school soundtrack. Convicts, Something Serious and Geto Boys Til Death were great. Would love to hear the Death Row versions...
Big Mike, the Original Gangsta. I always felt he was underrated and never received the shine he so deserved. Comin' from the Swamp was Somethin' Serious. Havin' Thangs like Burbans and Impalas & was Still Serious. He went from Playa to Governor with that Southern Dialect. Everybody Wants a Name and Big Mike got that respect. There were Grey Skies but it wasn't All a Dream. Heads Like us be Southern Supreme. 12 O'clock, Sunday Morning, it's the Return of the Gangsta Shit. Hustlers, and Made Men are Hard to Hit. None, is fucking with this one. None, even with a 1000 Guns. Big Mike was Claimin' Real, from the Giddy Up. From Nawlins to Houston, the first to put 2 cities up. Salute to the O.G. all bangers.
Bourbon and Impalas is criminally underrated even among his own fans seeing as it never gets mentioned as one of his best songs
@@datniggaeazye.5968 I totally agree.
Big Mike was the Young Buc back in the day. And I'm talking about music, nothing personal.
they look like brothers
Big mike Basically brought Pimp C into the Main stream that guy is a legend. he has some of the hardest Cruising albums ever made.
WORD 💯💯💯
Great interview. Like “Hard to hit”, yukmouth said rap-a-lot sabotaged the release of his last album for rap-a-Lot too.
That was that Million Dollar Mouthpiece I really like that album u can tell it was messed up from production on down to the Features misplacement I was like WTF happen I bought the real Album and thought it was bootleg lol
@@southeastt5218 Yeah, "Million Dollar Mouthpiece" was a letdown from what we've known of Yukmouth. I can tell that the label was screwing around with that album. "Thugged Out: The Albulation" is gonna always be Yukmouth's classic. That album was a masterpiece.
@@vexotimmer2675 yupp thug lord New Testament got some heaters too but albulation was the shit
I was a young'en in 93,94,95 but I knew every word to every song big mike rapped on😂😂and still remember them till this day✌️✌️💯
What's up big Mike. Do you remember the time in the hood we was spitting on the corner of England and Dreyfus late at night and the police pulled up on us. That was me.
One thing that most empress me about big Mike and 8ball is the clean flow. Anyone who raps knows how much to touchdown president vocal patterns. These guys are masters.
Master indeed, Eric Jackson. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
That was cool you got to rap with big mike. That an experience that is everlasting.
For my self, I was in prison in mid 90s when I got a hold of the track something serious. Never heard anything like that the way he molly whooped that beat with the talk box. That's was amazing. Here's the funny thing no ever schooled me or maybe they didn't know I always thought big mike was the creator of the talk box. It wasn't until 2 yrs ago I was with this white dude a co- worker he always liked how I went deep into my hip hop memory bank and brought up old school tracks. Played something serious and I was gushing over the talk box his creativity. That white hipped me up the original master and creator of the talk box was peter Frampton. Old school rock roller, but he was just different than his counter part's of his rock era. He's the creator of the talk box check him out on you tube. Sad thing is the rock roll hall of Fame still has not inducted him yet. Why I don't know. But the dude carear was trippy , he hot back in his era then he just went ghost for 10 yrs than resurfaced again with different styles. But luv that track for ever from big mike.
TIL DEATH DO US PART CD WAS THE SHIT I ALSO STILL HAVE THAT ON 💿
I meet Big Mike he signed my still serious tape at a record store.
One of the best to ever do it.
Somethin Serious is a classic. Death do us part is the best gb project. Bangers and g lyrics with reality Poppin. Both project are probably in my top 20 most listened projects in life.... Good to see Big Mike getting good shine.. Let's keep showing support
Facts fam he was way better than Willie D and not too far from being on the same level as face lyrically mos def agree Something serious mos def a classic in the streets
Big Mike snapped on Hard to Hit
Still serious dope too! Candies for babies is one of my favorite songs ever!
I guess J-Prince wasn't quite on the level with everybody sound like.

I checked it out after this interview Classic Big Mike Sound im definitely fuckin wit it
It’s funny because most rappers in the south thinks the west coast be hating on them but every classic west coast album got somebody from the south on it
Name some of them
Texas aint South south is to Louisiana Texas is headed west
BIG MIKE FROM LOUISIANA
MR 3-2 & D.O.C FROM TEXAS
THEY HELPED TO MAKE THE CHRONIC. WHY WOULDTHEY HATE ON WHAT THEY HELPED TO CREATE😒
I never new west coast hated south only east coast rappers i.e. north east but they did have problems with uncle like and 2 live crew funny the country western singers never get shoot at and killled ????? Why is that

Ghetto boys, Big Mike and Pimp C was my go to from the south. Much love from South Central Los Angeles.
Dude is dope. Banging hitters.
That album Hard To Hit was so low-key as it was being unheard of. But I remember that album. I remember seeing this advertisements of his album in 1999 from the XXLs, The Source and Vibe magazines. After 1997, Rap-a-Lot sound was going through transition. Hard to Hit album was the album when Big Mike sounded so angrily and aggressive unlike his early projects. Mike was right about the label. He said he went to prison. Why???? He burn one of the Rap-a-Lot office at that time. Even though I love that album, but Big Mike wasn't happy with the label. So, he was right. Anyway, the Rap-a-Lot sound from the 2000s couldn't touch the OG Rap-a-Lot sound from the early-mid 90s in my opinion. I'm proud for Big Mike leaning his lesson after serving his time in prison. I'm also happy that he's staying humble and safe without toning it down.
Yeah, I agree with you as far as the Rap-A-lot sound and production in the 90's, they were at their best during that time. Guys like Mike Dean, Tone Capone, N.O. Joe, etc... Their in-house production team was top notch. To this day, Scarface's song, "Mary Jane", is one of the best instrumentals i've ever heard in music.
I love somethin serious but I think STILL serious is hella slept on. It had some real buttery smooth jams especially that track Mike did with Mystikal. He was tapping back in with his N.O. roots on that one.
Hard to Hit is one of the last great 90s albums
His Still Serious album is hard. My dad used to bump that with the 15s in the back of the truck
That was his best album in my opinion
That album is hella slept on. It’s got some real smooth, chill vibes. That track he did with Mystikal was fireeee.
Ready for this one!

I bought it. Very good album. He has a cut with spice 1 Crazy!!
The song with Yukmouth is my favorite
It would have been alot better if maybe 4 songs were taken off. It was a loooong album lol
One of Big Mike's best albums
Yo that ad in the source! I was like who is this nigga with the chopper behind him lol. Reminds of an era, all those covers made me wanna be a graphic designer...looking back those adds were so overdone and basic looking compared to now.
fav track im just a playa playa and murder squad gun smoke
Face really didn't want Mike on RAL cuz that boy was a beast on that Mic
@Rico Pierre face mos def the overall better MC but in the early 90s Big Mike could go bar for bar with anybody jys listen to the TDDUP album he came hard as face on every track fam

Big mike is a true og. His verses on the geto boys were unforgettable and he was a worthy replacement for willie d in 1993... something serious was a great album, borderline classic. The follow up (still serious) was awful - and now we know why!! It is a shame mike didnt get the career he deserved because of contract desputes and jail time... he still put out some very good albums in the 2000s and i am glad to see him happy in life
Still serious is a bonafide classic!! Fock you mean borderline

Everyone always mentions his somethin serious album but still serious & hard to hit are both equally if not better than his first album.
Thing I noticed is all the people signed to Rapalot aren't millionaires but J prince is well off. That doesn't seem right and he speaks about how he loves black people but Geto Boys are broke and have classic hits. Fucked up. I would never sign with Rapalot that is like signing to Suge Knight.
