Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

Man I remember as a kid I lived in an apartment complex in Long Island called La Bonne Vie. K-solo lived there too at the time. He had two pit bulls named ivory and homicide. I was a young guy and everyone would idolize solo. He rapped, he knew how to box, he was on the come up…. One day I’m at the pool, trying to learn how to swim. I was like 12 lol. He’s there chillin and comes by and kinda coaches me on what I need to be doing to learn. I didn’t have a dad or a mom, I was just moving around from place to place w different family. That day meant the world to me. Nobody could ever tell me nothing about Solo cuz this man took time to teach a young brotha how to do something as basic as swimming. Nothing but love for the OG!
That's incredible, David Britton. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
TIGHT
that's an awesome memory you shared brother.. just gained more respect for Solo!
That's love
Epmd is the most underrated breakup ever

That ‘92 breakup broke my heart, fam. 😆
Underrated break up?? That shit was HUGE NEWS back in the day.
Are you young something?
@@mikearicks77 I'm talking about underrated as far as finding stories about on here. Young 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm an OG son....... Brooklyn... 50 years old in a couple of months
@@romeod7549 No doubt. My apologies O.G.
I get the feeling he doesn’t like Parish very much…
yeah telling that lie saying he not a producer!!!! some of parrish's beats are doper than erick's!!!!
Might be slighted by the business which bleeds into the personal
@@drewali7 exactly. He’s clearly very bitter at the way things went and now trying to undermine Parish’s name.
@@drewali7 no bullshit! That “P’ Dangerous” off “The Awakening” was dope af I wished it was longer
@@drewali7 from what i understood parish was producing before eric sermon and was getting the bag. When eric saw that he got involved in producing. That information could be wrong but that's what i heard.
LOVE this interview. Salute Soren . Salute K Solo .
Eric has moved on and that's why him and Parrish reunited and made two Albums and Erick made his money back with Redman and Keith Murray so he's good
3 albums. We Mean Business. Easy to forget the last one they made.
@@ThaMizphit74 We Mean Business was okay, Out Of Business was their last great effort
@@91Definite Back In Business was the best of those 3.
@@ThaMizphit74 I beg to differ. Overall I think it was the best one (Back in Business) but, Out if Business and We Mean Business were just as dope. People just stopped checkin’ for they sound. They kept the same format and it worked for creating dOpE albums it just wasn’t a mainstream sound that was popular at the time. They stayed true to the EPMD boom bap sound and kept dope rhythms, rhymes and features so I salute 🫡 them for that and they remain my favorite group of all time. Big up K-Solo! He one of my favorites also.
They haven't reunite like that

Great interview. I'm confused they were all just together during Red & Meth Versuz battle. Wounds run deep I guess. To bad they couldn't just put the squad back together. That would be dope to drop a album all together.

How could he diss sampling when his biggest song uses a sample?🤷🏽♂️
It was sampled by pmd
Even on Sleeping Bag they was on Rush management too so the transition to Def Jam should’ve been easy. But real shit this break up hurt. I loved all these niggaz. Hit Squad was the hardest crew in hip hop

Good to see that you still alive. We lost a lot of rappers from back in the day.
Indeed, Tasha Washington. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
He said youre not a priducer if you sample music? He just knocked practically every hiphop producer out the box. A whole bunch of hiphop classic wouldnt exist if not for sampling. Sampling music and flpping it into something great is no easy task.
So all the music Teddy Riley did with samples or the joints Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis did with samples isn't "production"? Solo needs to kill that noise.🙄
What's hard about using some one else's hard work??..it's hard to make ur own music..

Erick sermon the funk lord was the main one behind the music. He is a incredible producer. Eric got royalty on just like music Marvin Gaye family blessed him.
And Erick said, Puffy got him mad checks by constantly sampling "You're A Customer"drum mix(which is a sample, but Puffy sampled Epmd version, not just the ZZ Top sample.)

Ksolo was just an artist do you really think they let him know the inside of the business! smh. Ask yourself why he not successful now? Soren don't let him talk no more!
Great interview!💪🏾
He's partially on point. Sampling won't get you the same writer's credit that playing the actual live instruments will. That being said, some of the greatest productions ever contained samples. Also, we think the "beat maker" is the producer, but actually the person who puts everything together is the producer...because he "produced" the final product. We wouldn't say The Fast And The Furious was produced by Chevrolet just because they used one of their cars in the movie.
Good points, pCuliar YooToob. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
hip hop heads don't understand that about beat makers and producers. you are 100% on point. I remember a Quik interview where he said he made the beat for a track but Dre produced the track he put it altogether and made it make sense made it a complete track

Prime Ali before the lay off would've beat Joe Louis ass because the Ali who beat Liston , Floyd Patterson and the rest of those guys before he was stripped of his title never laid on the ropes he was fast as hell and he was constantly moving you could barely put a glove on him
K Solo is paraphrasing the documentary Facing Ali(2003).Which has commentary from Joe Fraiser, Leon Spinks, George Chuvalu, Henry Cooper, George Foreman etc etc... Which his "Culture" doesn't know about, they too Spellbound I guess 😆
Damn, all these years, I thought "The Greatest" was about more than just punching in a ring. Thought it was mindset, a challenge, an assertion without care of critique, a viewpoint of one's own internal power and ability to manifest it through will and belief in one's self, a paradigm, a mantra. Turns out it really was just about being a prized fighter. Learn something new everyday.
"Nasty the nicest, I'm somewhat of a psychic

K Solo sounds a little bitter and maybe rightfully so.
It's was whole lot of B.S. that went down between Erick & Parrish and their artist got caught up in it.
Wish things could've worked out for the whole squad because they had it on lock until the 2 main guys started bumping heads.
Oh, yeah I went back to listen to that "I can't hold it back" remix by Parrish and it wasn't as bad as K Solo said it was.
It sounded like a beat from the early 90s. But salute to K Solo tho. His music should've been bigger than what it turned out to be.
It should have? But K Solo should’ve been continuing music with or without a label! That’s his fault 🗣💯! He made two good albums but he didn’t continue 🤷🏾♂️

The color purple is NOT our culture. This dude is bitter, justifiably so but bitter nonetheless
We have some of those aspects tho. What he is saying is not far fetched. What we experience now is definitely derivative of the era which The Color Purple depicted. But yeah they maybe some bitterness in there for several reasons one could speculate about.
Jewish creators take on our culture. Now let's see a brotha ore sista do a story on the Holocaust and see if that side hold it as the greatest take on what they went through! Yell
If some of these black people brag about how much money they have then they should have their own production company.
@@drewmarcus2893 little confused by this comment. having money does not mean you automatically should have a production company. I reiterate Color Purple is NOT your culture.
@@dajhedi Read carefully what I typed. I know the Color Purple isn't my culture, obviously. If rappers/entertainers or the general public brag about money then they should have their life up to par as they say they do or portray themselves as such. I never said because they have money makes them business savvy. If black people complain about not being represented properly. Then they should do the work themselves and come together as a collective or forget about it.

Well, E. Sermon said in an interview in front of Parrish, that Parrish produced the entire first EPMD album. Sooooo.....🤔
And Rakim said he produced a lot of Eric B and Rakim music. Then someone also spilled the Beans about Large Professors production duties for Rakim and G Rap. Prodigy said he produced the early Mobb Deep Songs including Shook ones pt 1. Havoc said it was both of them. Producer have a lot of drama on the low.
@@ricardomigu-elcerroali4779 Word! We don't even wanna start talkin' bout Daz's production on "The Chronic" & "Doggystyle".
@@esseen100 Exactly. You know I almost got into a fight with some older cat when I was 18, because he said I had no right, to front on Dr. Dre because I said he was a great orchestrater, engineer, mixer and visionary but that he didn't make all the beats he's credited for by fans🤔...still don't see the disrespect. That's how it goes though.
@@ricardomigu-elcerroali4779 since I was a young dude, I've been privy to "super producers" in the studio boppin' around with not much more than a pad and pencil while the musicians and engineers create all the music. Now I'm not saying they aren't "producing", but there should be a little more credit shared. 🤣
@@esseen100 LOL don't let Quincy hear that. Studio/Session players do/did a lot. I'm cool with Super Producer being visionaries and maestro of the overall sound or "product". But you know they say Hip Hop Babies is kinda ignorant and I'm a Hip Hop Baby. So I really do wanna know who made the beat, or added a different baseline, I actually fo look at beat making and sampling as arts. I don't wanna rob Noone of their Super Producer/ Show Runner props or cred. I just happen to love beat makers and budding producers too.

Comedy, Capital City. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
Wow Soren! You really have great patience and a calm demeanor. Solo was all over the place and inaccurate in these interviews! 🙁 I have so much to say here but I’ll keep it succinct. I’m the biggest EPMD fan since 1987! For the record, EMPD got hella hits! Headbanger is one of many! Although KSolo may have some valid points involving some of Parrish’s business practices, he’s off base about his business acumen. Truthfully, Parrish Smith was the precursor to Damon Dash/Jay-Z and ROC A Fella records. PMD made the first blueprint for rap music success and spoke it into existence beginning with Strictly Business. Erick Sermon was obviously the main producer of the crew. However, I’ve always questioned why Erick’s sound post EPMD wasn’t as hard or edgy, which lead me to believe that it was a collaborative effort on those EPMD records. Even if it was 80/20 E Double. K Solo is obviously very embittered and it’s a shame because he was a great rapper and contributor to the Hit Squad and legacy of EPMD. Records like I Can’t Hold it Back, Spellbound, Fugitive, & Your Mom’s in my Business, along with his verses on Knick Knack Patty Wack and Headbanger make him a hip hop treasure. God Bless K- Solo! Stay strong 💪🏽

you might have to give up more than 50% if you sample, depends on what was negotiated.
Mad respect to K Solo, but he’s painting with a broad brush when he keeps attributing all negative things with “our culture”. Those are his personal experiences not all black peoples situations. He’s speaking recklessly on a video that will live longer than any of us. In 100 years someone will see this and say see, heres this black guy describing black culture. He sounds utterly ridiculous. With all that said, his 1st album is still my shit. Do better son. Shouts to Soren, go Ravens!
Absolutely 💯 And that's very Dangerous of Him to paint it like that.Because a Movie can give glimpses of negative behaviors from a particular People. At a particular Time. But that's not the Whole Culture in it's entirety.Come on Solo Man please! don't do that My G! I understand You're trying to make a point and everything. But don't used that Damn Movie to group All Black People with. And say that's Our Culture. Now certain negative aspects of Our daily lives during the 20's,30's and 40's sound much better.
Most, outspoken and unabashed brothers use the word "Culture" to criticize, shame and combat their own negative experiences with people who look and are received as being the same as them by the world. K Solo knows damn well, so-called Black People, are not monolithic. Even when they share borders, language, religion and very similar histories. We are not one way, negative or positive. That is a dream we share and sometimes mistake for all that Unity implies and entails.

@KSolo-"This is what I don't like about black culture", my friend you are projecting. You and your former associates don't represent all of black culture, you are all just one "ultra small" part of it respectfully.
