- Why was classical music so important to Hitler and Goebbels? The stories of Jewish cellist Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, who survived Auschwitz, and of star conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who worked with the Nazis, provide insight.
The film centers around two people who represent musical culture during the Third Reich - albeit in very different ways. Wilhelm Furtwängler was a star conductor; Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, the cellist of the infamous Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz. Both shared a love for the classical German music.
The world-famous conductor made a pact with Hitler and his henchmen. The young woman, brought to Auschwitz for being Jewish, was spared death for her musical talent. While Furtwängler decided to stay in Germany and make a deal with the devil, Lasker-Wallfisch struggled to survive the brutality of the death camp, with a cello as her only defense. Why did gifted artists like Furtwängler make a pact with evil? Why was classical music played in extermination camps? And how did this change the way victims saw music?
German music was used to justify the powerful position the Third Reich claimed in the world, and to distract listeners from Nazi crimes. In addition to Beethoven, Bach and Brucker, Richard Wagner was highly valued, because he was Hitler’s personal favorite. Hitler understood the power of music, and his chief propagandist Joseph Goebbels was in charge of music in the Nazi-controlled state.
This music documentary by Christian Berger features interviews with musicians like Daniel Barenboim and Christian Thielemann; the children of Wilhelm Furtwängler; and of course 97-year-old survivor Anita Lasker-Wallfisch. Her memories are chilling. Archive film footage, restored and colorized, brings the story to life, and bears witness to an agonizing chapter in history.
The documentary ‘Music under the Swastika: The Maestro and the Cellist of Auschwitz’ has been nominated for a 2023 International Emmy® Award in the Arts Programming category.

Brilliant! As our high school band teacher, the incomparable Mr. Del Ingvalson, always told us: "music is the one thing which will always be with you. Every day you'll see people and things in your life come and go; music will never leave your heart until the day you die. And when you do, there will be music at your funeral." Dignified and immensely moving documentary. My uncle; Fred Fisher is the British "Tommy" holding the hand of the distraught woman in the Belsen concentration camp. He was the village greengrocer, a loving, kind man.He told my family that five years of combat didn't prepare them for what they witnessed that day.

@@ashively1 Thank you, they felt inadequate to the task.They volunteered their rations but it induced vomiting, so they started the survivors on sugar solution. The authorities asked for volunteers for burial duty, realising that this was beyond the call of duty,each soldier who came forward was allowed one watch from the vast store of stolen watches. My uncle had a silver pocket watch, that he kept as a remembrance of that time, but he never wore it.

This was a really remarkable documentary. It broke my heart, but if we do not face the truth, we will never learn. The cellist lady is so strong and so clear in her thinking.

I'm a German born in 1986. I see the these few of the few survivors and how they carry themselves . I admire them so much. Their kindness, openness and their strength is unbelievable. I know right! I learned about Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, Alma Rosé and the women's orchestra of Auschwitz many years ago and I've been impressed with Anita (and Alma ❤) ever since. I admire her sharp mind, her dignity and inner strength so much

Yes we should all be better at acknowledging and cheering on those who have fought for our countries and protected it.
My celllo teacher (Kazimierz 'Kaz' Hardulak) was a prominent pre-war musician in Poland (conductor of the Warsaw Opera House) and spent most of the war in a prison camp, where he ran an orchestra. Luckily, he was easily distracted from the thankless task of trying to teach me the cello and was happy to talk about his life be. As Anita Lasker-Wallfisch says, you can't kill the music and Kaz survived through music. His stories were truly inspirational and always positive. As Lasker-Wallfisch says: "Hate is a poison and in the end you only poison yourself." I'm thankful for the inspiration of people like Kaz and Lasker-Wallfisch.

Dear authors and editorial team, your work is highly appreciated. This film has made a long-lasting impression on me.
I recommend everyone to read the book "Alma Rosè :Vienna to Auschwitz ".I have never read such a heart moving biography. And also it gives all the details about the women's orchestra of Auschwitz in depth.
She saved so many lives of women by making them members of the orchestra but she never lived to tell her story.
As a middle eastern i wish more people here watch this to understand the pain these human beings suffered.
I don't know if there's other lives for them to get their justice, but I wish peace for their souls and for all the people in the middle east and around the whole world.
It would be good to see this done on the Holodomor. That gets swept under the rug for some reason.
I am one of many Americans who wish for peace in the Middle East too. But we must do more than wish; we have to get control of our government again too.

My husband is from Middle East. We have had countless conversations about past and current political events. It pains me to see everything that’s happening. I don’t know if I should be more mad for what my grandmother and her grandparents have gone through, or at the current world events. I think so much how different my life would’ve been if my family survived and I had a village to visit, or know who my great grand aunts were. I hate that some of our people are causing so much pain to their cousins… I hate all the unnecessary suffering humans cause to each other..😡

Furtwangler, the major conductor who at the time became so great communicating with musicians that there was no one like him and today, there are others who want to perform effectively as him. I never thought anyone from ww2 could pass their core values to next generation.

There is footage of the
'Third Reich' in original
Agfa Colorfilm,
which existed since about 1936,
also in this documentary.
Much of that footage,
often made by private amateur filmers on 16mm film, was only discovered some twenty years ago.
(The German TV-magazin 'Spiegel-Tv' made a whole compilation of several hours of that footage called 'Das Dritte Reich in Farbe' around that time .)
Among this footage were for instance the home movies, which Eva Braun, who was a passionate amateur filmer, had made on the Obersalzberg, filming the dictator's closest entourage in authentic colors.
Also the footage of the destroyed Berlin from 1945/46 shown in this documentary was original footage of the US-Army made in authentic Technicolor or Kodakcolor.

Thank you for this wonderful film. I’ve fallen in love with Anita Lasker Wallfisch. The contrast between how the Nazi regime as crucible hardened her integrity-musical and otherwise-as an intended victim, while it broke Furtwängler, one of its heroes, is an object lesson for all of us.
I am also in love with Anita Lasker-Wallfisch. Her book, mentioned by me above, is very much worth reading. Inherit the Truth is the title.

That's unbelievable that this lady and her sisters survived 3 years into concentration camp they say the average life expectancy was 6 months!
Unbelievable is the word !
Musicians had privileged position , they did not had to do back breaking jobs , their food was better.
Not so surprising. Those who happened to master an orchestral music instrument were REALLY PROTECTED by their instrument. Nazis needed musicians but needed to feed and treat them well (much better than other prisoners) in order for music to happen (!), these monsters knew it too well... not because of sudden humanity in the Nazi brain.

Of course the things happened are terrible and unacceptable but this documentary can make all of us have an emphaty for the people who had this sorrow in the past. As for the movie "The Pianist" by Roman Polanski, I can say that this documentary is in my top 10 list. I can watch it again and again.

Norman Lebrecht's judgement of Furtwängler is harsh beyond words. Furtwängler did in fact consider moving to the US in the 30s but as soon as word got out there were demonstrations back in the US (one biography states that it was orchestrated by either Goebbels or Goering, I can't remember which, via contacts in NY) because the US he was already considered a Nazi, while in Germany he wasn't, in fact quite the contrary, and, unlike Karajan, was never a party member. Furtwängler was a German who represented the best of German culture and he felt , perhaps naively, that this was his calling and his service to his people during extremely difficult times. He never thought of Nazis as being truly German, the Germany of Goethe, Schiller, Beethoven etc. Lebrecht is, in my opinion, also incorrect about music in Germany being complicit - it was not, it was MISUSED by the Nazis, and Richard Strauss (also decidedly anti-Nazi , with a Jewish daughter in law whom he adored and protected through every means possible,), also performed during Nazi organized propaganda concerts...much to his displeasure. He was an old man at the time and was likewise trying to continue his art in the country that best understood it. Of course both were morally distraught at the end of the war, and full of regrets, but Lebrecht cherry-picks the comment by Furtwängler regarding feeling more sorry about Germans than the victims, which IMO is complete and utter nonsense. I spent a whole day with Elizabeth Furtwängler, the conductor's widow, in the late nineties and she mentioned his never having gotten over the horrors discovered after the war... and that it would haunt Germany forever. He remained in Germany, like Strauss, as a German who delivered music that the German people loved above all else. It's very easy to judge from an armchair 80 years later; historical hindsight is 20/20.
There are people who WANT Furtwängler to be a Nazi, who insist he HAD to be one. Giving them a detailed list of people who said he intervened on their behalf and saved their lives will never be good enough.
The myth of Furtwängler being a willing henchman of the Reich is a leftover of the mid-20th century and is a very British fixation. They are welcome to it.

The integration of all subjects of music, ethics, politics and their life and death impacts melded with all of the extraordinary never before seen archival film footage is priceless.

Rarely have I been so captivated by a documentary as to set aside time and break my routine to follow through to the conclusion. Most are so hackneyed and intellectually impoverished any thinking person may write the final lines having seen only the introductory credits, however this filmmaker has understood the divine gift of having Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, whose lived experience would be exceptional enough, but coupled with the immensity of her compassion, clairvoyance and humility, all gifted through the divine inspiration of music, has allowed the construction of a documentary beyond comparison with almost anything we have seen in the past 70 years of trying to comprehend the ineffable.
Fascinating story. Survival. loss. hate and finally reconciliation and the recognition that" poison ultimately kills the person holding it"

I am ever in awe of the openness for German to discuss or show and face the "dirty past". Unlike Russia and China whose dictators in the past (and present) who had done atrocities towards it's own people and to this date, still avoid them being discussed or in many cases plaster over them with fake narratives.
The Western colonial countries still avoid the discussion of Reparations to the subject People and their descendants in former European colonies.
Same in the uk and the usa who carried out huge genocides against many ethnicity and still don't discuss it .
On the contrary they herowarship them
I think it’s harder for Russian and Chinese people to discuss it openly in their countries because they are still autocratic countries with limited freedom of speech

There are people in Germany who are truly willing to face their dirty past. There are such people in Russia and China too. However, there are so few of them, they are statistically insignificant.
Overwhelming majority just go with the flow. The flow can be either "all our past, present and future are glorious, we can do no wrong" (as in China or Russia) or "all our past, present and future are dirty, we can do no right and have to feel eternally guilty from birth to death (as in Germany, the UK or the USA).
But when they say, "we are (bad, guilty, dirty), they never say, "I". It's always "we". It's always somebody else.
Very often it's children rebelling against their parents. (Here too they are taught they are supposed to rebel, so they rebel. Always go with the flow.) Which means it's not really confronting the past, just the usual generational stuff.
Please don't be naive, or you will become a victim of propaganda. Overwhelmingly people are schmucks everywhere.

I taught myself Dutch years ago and I'm still relatively fluent, I'm surprised at how much of the German I can understand, I also studied Old English and some Old Norse and that certainly helped too.

Very interesting. It would have made since if I would have learned Dutch as my grandmother was Dutch paternally. I do have an interest in that language and in Afrikaans. I however choose to learn German. I think Old English is interesting as well, especially considering the unique letters such as thorn, as well as others. I find it also interesting because of English's Germanic roots which are much more visible with Old English.
Owing to my location, I have little cultural context; i only know through readings of history. But, i am convinced that while it is important to forgive and reconcile, it is important never to forget. Because, it is when we forget that history repeats itself.
It's not so much that "history repeats itself" but that people don't change.

This is a tremendous piece of work, showing a previously little discussed facet of the period. I appreciate the effort and truth behind this documentary. Relatives of mine, in the Gypsy camp were made to play for arriving trains and selections, to keep the people calm.🖤🇨🇦

This brings to mind the character Winchester in the American television series MASH (4077). The surgeon Winchester sought relief from the horrors of the Korean war by listening to symphonies on his record player. In the last episode of MASH the war is ended and all are going home. Winchester looks at his record albums and smashes them in a fit of rage. He states that This WAR ! , has completely destroyed his love for Classical Fine Art music. The music that gave him comfort now manifests only pain and suffering. ❤😢 This documentary reveals a facet of this place and time that is worth comprehending. Well done Deutsche Welle.

Wonderful documentary of tragic happenings, Another excellent related musical documentary, is called The Return of the Violin. That movie is about the famous Huberman Stradivarious violin, named for the famed violinist who founded the Israel Philharmonic, saving the musicians and their families who were getting kicked out of other European orchestras, besides just Germany during the Holocaust. With Joshuah Bell, current owner of the violin. Recommended.

My Kiwi (New Zealander) Mother was a polyglot. She went on what we Kiwis now call an O.E. (overseas experience), which many of us partake in when we are young, to Europe in the 1960's and ended up in Greece where she met my Father where they fell in love. He later moved to NZ and they married and she learnt fluent Greek off of him much faster than he ever learnt his broken English. Later, after the inevitable divorce (70% of marriages of Greek men to Kiwi women fail) she lost custody of my Sister and myself, and to bear the pain of losing us she decided to learn French and move to Paris, as NZ is really a baby factory centred around having and raising families. So, she went to nightschool here in Auckland, and her teacher there was a wonderful, genial Jewess by the name of Georgette, whose French was so perfect I took her for a Frenchwoman, even though she was actually born a Czech (as was her husband, Georges). In no time Mum had picked up enough French to get a job in Paris, where she landed a rôle as a personal secretary to one of the Secretaries General of the OECD at the Château de la Muette in the 16ème. Pretty awesome if I say so myself for an Anglo to speak more than just Anglo. 👍
Later, Mum came back to NZ on leave and took me with her to live in Paris, and Georges and Georgette, who were her friends, came up to stay at a friend's appartement for that first Summer I was there, in Passy. We were invited over for dinner one hot Parisian night and Georgette was wearing a summer frock. She must have noticed me looking at her arm, so she brandished it at me, stating "see this tattoo here! This was from my time in Auschwitz". Then Georges followed suit and rolled up his shirtsleeve and showed me his tattoo too, no doubt carved into them by the Tattooist of Auschwitz. I knew about Auschwitz, having had a Jewish _belle mère_ (step mother) who had married my Father who lost family in the camps, but they then proceeded to tell me that they were Czech Jews and after the war, as so many Jews did so, they moved to Paris.
This story has always stayed with me. The fact they both had these tattoos drove this home to me and the way that they imparted how they got them, seeing Anita recount and *speak* at the Bundestag reminded me of the frank way that Georgette told me of this at that dinner table that night. Because after the war nearly no-one wanted to hear about the survivors' plights, about what they were put through.

I'm German, born in 1961. It hurts my soul to watch this. Growing up in the 1960's and 1970's, this was never talked about until the American Series "Holocaust" was broadcast in Germany. Until then, a lot of Germans never gave it a second thought what happened
Is that because many Germans who were adults or nearly adults during WWII were still too ashamed to admit what happened and that it had been allowed to occur?
Because they knew already but couldnt say anything against it. Those who suffered in the Nazi Germany No doubt, it was really tough for the people especially when losing their loved ones no matter in the Army or a civilian. The Truth is people died in these wars nobody won only innocents died on the orders of their generals.
Good you watched.
Much like the Chinese today.

I saw this at a film festival last year. Norman Lebrecht's interventions are ignorant and useless and he was given way too much screen time. There are real specialists on these topics that could have contributed actual substance. Anita Lasker Walfisch, on the other hand, is an impressive, touching, remarkable woman and I am grateful to this documentary for having introduced me to her.
Such a touching documentary film! It’s in the middle of the night, I‘m sick and couldn’t sleep. For me, comparing these musicians, Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, Alma Rosé, some of the musicians of Theresienstadt and Wilhelm Furtwängler, it’s a strange thing!
You can see, the difference between Anita Lasker-Wallfisch and Wilhelm Furtwängler, she stayed inside herself, she was strong, because she was on the right place, she wasn’t joining the Nazis. She was even helping french prisoners, even she was under threat. Furtwängler he knew, he was on the wrong side, it made him a weak person comparing to Anita Lasker-Wallfisch. He was disgusted by it, but didn’t dare to change it. In his heart he wasn’t a Nazi, but he was a sort of coward. And also I think he felt a kind of responsibility for the musicians.
The problem is, the people served Hitler the most, they weren’t Nazis themselves, sometimes they were people that even hated them. Furtwängler he was a much too clever and intellectual man who detested violence. But because he was not a simple stupid cruel Nazi he could serve the Nazi propaganda better.
This is a lecture to us, that even we stay good in our heart we can serve the evil. Karajan was much more Nazi than Furtwängler, but Furtwängler served the Nazis better.
I think what connects Furtwängler with Anita Lasker-Wallfisch and Alma Rosé is, that all of them were forced to play music for people, they were disgusted of. They had to violate the music for serving the crimes. Furtwängler was in a golden cage, but it was sad he couldn’t be more courageous. My only wish of the documentary film is, please let the people speak in their own language with subtitles, not with voice-over. It takes away the emotions.
My deep respect for Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, which I one time met personally! She is such an extraordinary woman! She really is a fighter for humanity, for kindness and courage. I hope, that in life I could stay brave like her against injustice, not like Mr. Furtwängler resigning and serving the wrong side.
