Serious props to Powder's voice actress. The way she's able to mimic the sound of straining to talk through the lump in your throat while sobbing and gasping is spot on. Most adult actresses can't even channel this. This girl is a prodigy.

I’ve seen people bash Vi much more than Powder but it’s very true that both their reactions are justified - whereas Powder was concerned with Vi hating her (due to her attachment and abandonment issues and wanting to be useful to not be abandoned), VI’s anger issues caused her to slap her sister. Though tbh a slap, considering the giant mistake Powder just made, seems smaller in comparison.

The voice acting and animation definitely captured a child's uncontrollable crying in a way I don't think I've ever seen in an animation. The stumbling over words, limited sentences, and trembling/minor flinches in Powder's arms and body are a tremendous capturation of a child in emotional torment. Wonderfully done, Riot.

"I...I didn't...I was saving you..." That line has hurt me more than I ever expected. It's the last vestiges of Powder's optimism, her hopefulness that she'd actually done something right...even seeing Vander lying dead behind Vi, she has to hold onto that, has to believe that her success in finally getting her bomb to work was a good thing. Then she sees Claggor's goggles, spattered with his own blood. And she realizes that no, this wasn't a good thing. This was a TERRIBLE thing. In her efforts to save her family, she had *killed* them. everything went so horribly wrong. Vi ALWAYS told Powder that she is ready, she can do it, always supported her, encouraged her. she was that pillar that Powder needed. but this one time Vi told her "you're not ready". and everything went in the worst way possible: the bomb, had it not exploded, it did perfect: it distracted that freak long enough: the wall was breached, Vander was freed. but the bomb DID explode, and that one chance for everyone to escape disappeared. Vi's own pillar, her mentor, her adopted father, was gone, with her friends. she was broken, she could not support Powder through this. this seeming betrayal and abandonment, added to Powder's already mental frailness, gave birth to Jinx. what a sad origin story :(

This scene has so many details, and i havent seen anyone talk about them yet, but i think they are worth a discussion, first lets talk about Powder's reaction, I love it. She's so child like its amazing, the way she just pleads for forgiveness and breaks down in tears repeating the same sentences that are purely emotional, is just so spot on to how a child her age would react to something this overwhelming, then vi hits her, pay attention to Powder's facial expressions, she closes her eyes multiple times from fear as vi grabs her cheeks and the expressions are so godlike, then Powder bleeds from the strike from Vi down to her bandaged palm, vi takes a look at it, realizing that's her sister's blood, looks at her bloodied knuckles and she's probably reminded of Vander's speech to her about violence only creating more problems, instead of solving them, after that realization Vi gets up to cool off and as she does Powder crawls up, lifting her arms infront of her because she wasnt sure what Vi was gonna do and was scared she might hit her, and as Vi walks away Powder calls her by her full name, thats all basically, i just thought it was worth a mention.

I'm not actually mad at Vi for being angry at powder for blowing up the building because she is a child and she just went through a very traumatizing situation once again, so it'd be unrealistic for her to be all calm and rational after that, though Powder is probably going to live the rest of her life for that guilt, even though she really was trying to save her sister but didn't think things through, and thinking her sister abandoned her when she was actually taken

@@noxiouskunk7069 no, very likely they would've died with or without that bomb. The mutant was about to open the door and Silco had much more man behind him. Vander refused to fight and Vi was weakened. It's easy to put all the blame onto powder however the point od Arcane is that things are not black amd white. Vi started all that by doing thinfs that Vander told her not to do and putting everyone in danger. Then she again fights against Vander and she goes against his orders. Then she tells Powder to hide the stones. Vander himself would've died because of Vi. With her actions Vi set a bad example for Jinx too. On the other side Jinx is a 9 years old who's seeing her family about to die. She has an opening she must try to save them. She sees Vi fight and lose and her team back off. The mutant is about to break the door, so she throws the bomb. And it works, evem though 2 people of their team died. The point of Arcane is showing all the sides of the coin and the effects of war, greed , poverty, pain, abandonment etc.

He drank shimmer Silco had given him. Anyways, The explosion blew open the door, Vi's injured and pinned down, Mylo and Claggor/Clagger are crushed to death by rocks and debris. Deckart was wounded amd later killed as a result of the escalating situation. However the explosion did help in injuring him and holding him back for a while. That explossion was also kind of useful because it injured all of Silco's men and kept them away for a little bit. One could argue Vander could've just grabbed Vi and ran away but he stayed back to fight mostly because he was blinded by anger. This unfortunately resulted in his death.
My main point was showing to some people there are two sides to every coin. A lot of people tend to see Arcane as good vs bad but the story is more complicated than that. Everyone seems to support Vi because she's the "good" one. Yet they fail to see Vi's mistakes and instead put all the blame in a child. Even as an adult Jinx is mentally unstable. In a war I'd kill her first for being dangerous but I wouldn't turn her onto the personification of greater evil simply because crazy people are neither good nor bad. They're crazy and crazy doesn't care for good or bad. Vi claims to be morally superior yet she fails to do so in many ways. This clash is seen again and again with Jayce, Victor etc.

Here in Arcane, I never had that disconnect. The dialogue and the writing is fantastic.
The fight in the first episode was brutal, awkward, messy, and uncomfortable. As it is when kids are fighting. I think the thing about voice acting is you gotta put at least a little of yourself in the character you're playing. I'm guessing Mia had breakdowns like this as a young child and was picturing herself as that age and she feels like it's happening. During the production of Charlotte's Web (1973) Pamlyn Ferdin really cried while recording the scene where Fern tried to talk her father out of killing Wilbur. Carroll Spinney (Big Bird and Oscar) got emotional easily. The first Sesame Street feature film involved a scene where Big Bird was kidnapped by circus brothers and painted blue. He was supposed to entertain the audience but instead sang a sad song about how homesick he is. According to IMDB, Mr. Spinney broke down after recording the song.

The Arcane team apparently had more time to work on their thing and it must not have been until they were closer to finished before having a set deadline. I think independent projects are more likely to be made better because they have more control than projects done by big studios.

It’s not pretty, or aesthetic, or still looking beautiful while gently crying for the sake of being cinematic. It’s gritty, it’s snot running down your face, its begging whoever is around you to stay with you so that you aren’t alone with what’s just happened because you feel like the most fragile thing in the world and your mind physically cannot handle the amount of emotional damage being inflicted.
It’s completely sobbing until you can’t breathe, the whites of your eyes turn red and tremors wrack your voice and body. It’s literally your brain racing to make sense of trauma before an overload causes you to destroy yourself. Genuinely never *ever* been so impressed with animation and voice acting as I have been with Arcane.

I've read a comment, don't Remember where, about this scene that really stuck with me, about the difference between western and eastern animation.
In animes, "ugly crying" as this would have been called, is usually reserved for comic relief moments, while the type of crying used for serious and emotional scene is one where tears rush silently down a stoic and impassive face. Here, instead, we have a full blown manic/panic episode, with screaming and snot and with the face twisting in desperation.

This moment hits a lot harder once you realize that there is no reconciliation arc after this. My expectation going into this was that the show would go for the classic "families get broken but come back together in the end." trope that leaves everyone with a warm fuzzy feeling inside. But after watching the finale, this moment is retrospectively much darker.
This isn't some bump in the road in the sisters' relationship. THIS IS THE END OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP.
They tease at the possibility of reconciliation all throughout the season, but after what she did in the finale Powder can't come back at this point. Maybe you could argue that she was being controlled by Silco when she killed all those enforcers, but Silco was already dead when she fired that missile at the council meeting. That was her decision. You can't classify her as a pawn or a victim anymore, Jinx is a mass murderer. She's a full-on villain now. But having seen their origin as fleshed out as we did, we know that she REALLY WAS a sweet, innocent child at some point.
The way her trauma and sense of abandonment whittles down her sanity and finally breaks her feels completely real. I've literally never seen a villain that I had so much sympathy for in ANY MEDIUM. The fact that this character, which was essentially created as a Harley Quinn knockoff is so well developed that she can murder innocent people and you still feel an emotional connection to her is such a testament to the strength of the writing. Riot chose to do the uncompromising thing at the risk of pissing off fans and they executed it with unequivocal perfection.
This isn't the best "video game adaptation" to come out. This isn't "surprisingly good for a show based off League of Legends" This is the best animated series of all time.

To me, the thing that makes this scene so painful is the fact that I cant bring myself to blame anyone in particular for this tragedy.
It was understandable that Powder wanted to help. It was understandable that Vi reacted the way she did. The whole sequence of events from the first botched job to this nightmare was just BAD LUCK, which in turn is the inevitable result of a LACK OF OPTIONS.

well, there is more to it: fiddlesticks tells one's deepest fearest against them and (if I recall, uses that against the person he's speaking to) used that against jinx.
jinx only saw it as trying to help and (not going to lie, if jinx weren't there, the 4 of them: vi, maylo, claggor, and vander) would have died without her help.
maylo fueled it, but vi put the final nail in the coffin: "it's your fault! You jinx!" and jinx is trying to deep down reject the idea that she did kill them. (which, she did indirectly; but I don't blame her for what she did.)
jinx copes with this fact by thinking she actually helped (and I agree she did). I'm not too sure on how to explain it, but it's some sort of coping mechanism and jinx's greatest fear is that she actually killed her adoptive family; directly or indirectly.

That high pitched "Why did you leave me!" . Poor girl. That breaks my heart. Her feeling of abandonment hurt her far more than the punch Vi just gave her ever could. It makes sense why she latched on to Silco so quickly.

It honestly hits so hard because it is relatable. I remember breaking down like that when I was a kid. My dad kicked out his wife (my step mother) multiple times over the course of several years because of some misguided rage. They always got back together later on. I hated my step mother, but her daughter (my older step sister) was everything to me and I remember crying like Powder every single time that I thought I would never see her again. I was around the same age, too. This scene haunts me.

I can't recall a time when a animated show has shocked me this much. This whole episode was so brutal and Powder being so much like an actual child made this so much harder to watch. People have already been pointing it out but her crying was escepially well animated and voice acted, it just felt so real. I think It's always been a huge pet peeve of mine when in shows (well usually animated ones) the characters don't properly react to death and other stuff that might shock them, especially when the characters are actually suppose to cry. But this show just handled the emotions so well it was rly refreshing to see. Definitely one of the best animated shows I've seen.

Damn, the voice acting in this from Powder's VA was so damn good. She captured not only that uncontrollable crying of a child who's so upset they're hysterical, but also that of a child who only knows what she sees in front of her, and that's her sister walking away from her. The way she cries for her to come back is a child who really believes she's being left behind. She knows she made a huge mistake that got the rest of her adoptive family killed, Vi didn't just get angry with her but struck her both with her hand and with calling her the same thing Mylo always did, a jinx, after so many times telling her it's fine, we all have bad days--then Vi's response to Powder pleading with her was to walk away. She needed that space of course, for how upset she was, but a child as young as Powder wouldn't necessarily understand that, all she would get from that is, "I need you to still stay with me even though you're so mad at me, please don't hate me," and Vi doesn't do that here, not at first, not until she sees Powder is about to be in trouble. So, as far as Powder knows, Vi is leaving her for good and all she can do is beg her not to. And when she immediately doesn't come back, she loses hope...and then Silco comes across her.

This sucks because Violet never actually "abandoned" her, she was just resting around the corner to collect her thoughts because she had just lost 3 important people in her life like not even a minute before.

@@zzirfamo24 Vi wasn't CAPABLE of being there for Powder in this moment. She was in too much pain (and had literally no time to proccess any of it before this happened). The best she _could_ do for Powder was remove herself from the situation before she hurt her again. Vi, objectively-- by definition, DID NOT abandon her sister.
Being in too much pain to comfort someone isn't a "flaw." It's a circumstance. It's basic human nature; we can't just turn off our emotions. She needed to pull herself together first before she could be there for her sister, and there's nothing to "wrong" about it.

I'm in awe at the animation. The way the little details are shown in the animation, specifically with Powder's expression from 0:23 - 0:30, going from innocent excitement to confusion to horror is so powerful. The animation team really outdid themselves with Arcane and I hope they continue this level of quality for however long it goes. The way the voice acting compliments the animation is perfect. Good job Riot.
