Without Robert Fripp we would never have had King Crimson. For this and staggering innovation and craft on guitar playing and his service to music he should be awarded an MBE.
And don't forget his composing!
And how many more brilliant guitarists has he molded through Guitar Craft and the League of Crafty Guitarists. California Guitar Trio and Montreal Guitar Trio are both graduates, plus Trey Gunn, of course.
I loved the description of krimson in the docu prog Britannia. Joining krimson from yes for bruford was like going over the Berlin Wall into east Berlin. No papers required just extreme chops.
Fully expecting Fripp to execute a copyright infringement on this video
... well, that could happen I guess ???
2:46 wrong, the band has not survived. The band name though has survived with Robert Fripp but no-one else as this was not a band but a project all the time by Robert Fripp.
Per Fripp: "KING CRIMSON IS A WAY OF DOING THINGS".
I thought it was very well done. NOT the documentary I expected but more an unexpected film of Robert opening his heart in his inimitable way. He's since been posting videos on YT regularly.
Good review! I bought the BluRay because I knew this wouldn't come to a theater near me. While I enjoyed it, I thought that the extra feature, consisting of footage from the film as originally conceived, actually made a better documentary.
I love movie but it gave me hemorrhoids. Still pissed about Fripp's attitude towards Adrian Belew who saved King Crimson in the '80s.
Belew and Fripp were a FANTASTIC combination. . . They really complimented each other's playing style.
Belew's voice was perfect in the tracks (My favourites are 'Matte Kudasai' and 'Three of a Perfect Pair')
Yup Fripp always and Ahole to his band mates and Odd but a great musician !! Sad thing is Robert thinks it's okay how he is !!! A Psychiatrist dream no doubt to get into Fripp's head !! Lol 🧐
I’ve been lucky to meet Fripp at a workshop
He is truly genuine and brilliant
Jakko is one of the best right up there w Belew, Lake and Wetton
All are the best in the game by sacrificing to be in crimson
Legendary band!
To be blunt, it's Fripp's band, so it's Fripps rules. I love the band and love most of their output.
Hi Pete, I respect your reply mate.
You can have rules, and be demanding, without being an asshole, right?
I remember buying the first album when it came out just because of the cover (having never heard of them). I saw them only once in 1973 when they toured Lark's Tongue. I've been a fan ever since. Thanks for the review.
You’re welcome 55!
In the Court of the Crimson King (subtitled An Observation by King Crimson) is my all-time favourite album. I think Larks Tongues and The ConstuKction of Light are excellent albums too.
Simply put, no one can touch Crimson.
From humble beginnings to picking top musicians that create a unique sonic experience.
Hello from u.k.
First bought ISLANDS, when I was 14 the back catalogue, and albums
Up to RED added to my collection.
I love the sinfield lyrics on the early material, and I also think
the Palmer James lyrics are brilliant EXILES levels me
Every time I hear it.
STARLESS! You know where I’m coming from.
But in the court, is off the scale!
Consider the time of release, and what other stuff was about!
The age of the musicians, and skill, even the sleeve!
A mate of mine read Fripp was going to change the name
of the band, after RED and I think he should have.
They lost me after RED and believe me I’ve tried.
Just my opinion! Plenty like it, love Fripp early
acoustic tracks as well .
Your comment on the court, and larks, couldn’t
agree more, for me best album of all time
Is Court, someone mentioned playing
Lizard 2 or 3 times continuously blows you away!
It does!
Sorry to rant, but fans of the old crim, are a bit thin
on the ground these days!
@@madcyril4135
Hey,
Islands is good and nestles nicely between Lizard and Larks' Tongues. Mel Collins' playing reminds me of certain tracks by Gong. In fact, the entire album is very Gong-like, but without the "pot-head pixies". 😃
I'm with you on your favorite album, it was KC's best in my opinion, a collection of musical gems. Funny that Fripp wasn't a part of the band yet when it was made.
Adrian was fired, via f&*%ing e-mail. Wrongly, I might add.
It was more about the people who made the music than the music itself, which made it quite a unique documentary. As a life-long fan, I loved it.
This is a slightly shorter version of the original upload and contains less information about Robert Fripp. Here is the link to the slightly extended version. czcams.com/video/oTX2LXKXo60/video.html
Please do
@@TheBardtob Hello again Bard, OK, here is the link for the unlisted (slightly extended) version, which is 2.5 min longer. Let me know if the link doesn't work: czcams.com/video/oTX2LXKXo60/video.html

@@talldarkstrangerpr Hi Joss, here it is: czcams.com/video/oTX2LXKXo60/video.html
I must view this film, thank you again for your “fripp” ethic on content, writing, delivery.
Hi Tim, you're welcome. Hope you enjoy the movie!
Fripp, Zappa, Mark E. Smith. Three musical dictators sure; but also three (a) long, (b) commercially ignorant or ambivalent, (c) mainly critically successful bands/careers. I think therein lies the lesson. You need that intense singular vision to sustain a long career, but inevitably while pissing people off along the way. New viewer, good channel!
Thank you Peter, and welcome!
Brilliant, many thanks!
You're welcome!. Thank you
RED... 'Nuff Said
Happy memories King Crimson playing Goldsmith’s College University London, a long time ago!
I saw them twice in '69, brilliant.
@@henrydarker4314 Happy days
@@henrydarker4314 I think Led Zepplin played Goldsmiths, before the big time. I didn’t see LZ at Goldsmiths, although several times elsewhere in london, halcyon days, tickets cheap and easy to obtain, no outrageous addition fees, just a SAE!
@@jeanjacques9980 I think the Marquee LZ gig was their first there under the LZ name, tho' I think they played there with the 'New Yardbirds' name a couple of times before that. I took a lot photos at that gig, long lost unfortunately.
". . . halcyon days, tickets cheap and easy to obtain, no outrageous addition fees, just a SAE!" Indeed.
Thank you ! friendships !
it's basically 60 min of people talking about how insufferable fripp is, and about 20 min of rieflin's struggle. fantastic film, if a bit of a bummer.
That's not true! It's also at least 20 minutes being insufferable :-)
King Crimson is OG ROCK on !!!
I’ve seen Crimson twice in recent years , but do they need 3 drummers, the only time I feel more than one drummer works is the post 78 Genesis era .
You hit the mark.
Hi Lorcazola, thank you. Much appreciated!
So glad to see another face join the ranks of prog related channels! I wish you the best of luck (though you seem to be doing quite fine already).
Of course, you've got a new subscriber!
Cheers,

Hi Naomi, thank you and welcome!!
Fripp hates the term prog or progressive, he considers it a confining "box".
There are no words can truly describe what crimson was!
Not sure if this review makes me want to buy the Blu-Ray more, or less. Sounds kind of depressing to learn that a band you've loved for so long went through torment to do their creating.
Hi Jonathan, there should be a streaming service you can rent the movie from, which is a cheaper option. Let me know your thoughts once viewed (if you decide to view it). Cheers
Which streaming service?
@@manco828 Hi Manco, you could perhaps try: www.imdb.com/title/tt10148150/ although I haven't viewed it on imdb as I saw it in the cinema. I just typed in the movie title + 'rent' and this match came up. I'm located in Australia and here may be a better match where you are located (??)
Haven't we always known this?
Booked for Tuesday night. 👍
Let me know what you think of the movie Peter. I have a slightly extended version also showing more of Fripp if interested. Cheers
@@theyak7912 Will do. First saw them in 1971 in the Manchester Free Trade Hall, then in the mid 70's at The Hard Rock again in Manchester. I was at the bar before the show ordering a pint of Bitter, the chap behind asked for a glass of milk, I turned around to come face to face with Robert Fripp
@@peterhaslam5275 A glass of milk?? Hope you didn't drop your pint of Bitter when you turned around!
Fripp is like Ian Anderson without the self-mockery.
Anderson is a mediocre flute tootler that hasn't managed anything significant since the 70s , and not even in the same universe as Fripp
Have you not seen any of the Sunday kitchen stuff with Toyah??
@@weehudyy Mediocre? Really?
@@ulfingvar1 Yep , really ... Fripp is an actual ' A ' level musician , Anderson's abilities as a flautist wouldn't get him hired in any serious ensemble and he would be the first to admit it .
@@weehudyy Well, if there is one thing Anderson does better than ever TODAY it is playing the flute!

@@robertwcoleman4048 LOL LOL LOL
I always thought Fripp was pretty eccentric before watching this documentary. After watching it, it is obvious that he is WAY beyond eccentric. That would be much too nice of a description. It revealed quite clearly just what an insufferable prick he really is, on top of having some serious mental issues. It was SO creepy when he was asked a question that took him to some memory he did not like. He sat there completely motionless and silent, staring straight into space without even budging his face, FOR A SOLID THREE MINUTES or so, ending with a couple of tears running down his motionless face. It was such a long, uncomfortable, awkward silence. Then suddenly, out of the blue, he answers the question in a clear, completely unemotional and detached tone of voice. CREEPY.
Another answer to a question that revealed his strangeness was when he said, in a VERY angry tone of voice, that a bandmate making a mistake was akin to his mother dying, and explaining how angry it made him. Frighteningly creepy. He also goes on long, rambling, cosmic, psycho-babble speeches that don't particularly make much sense, sort of a stream-of-consciousness word salad.
Then there is bandmate after bandmate, including current members as well as past members, relating experiences where Fripp treated them horribly, and confessing that they really don't like him and are uncomfortable around him. There are sections where bandmates are answering a question when Robert is within earshot, and it is very obvious that he is intently listening in, and that the bandmate is visibly unnerved and intimidated by it. Where there's smoke there's fire.
Wrap all of that up with the fact that FRIPP HIMSELF REQUESTED that this documentary be made, yet spends the entire documentary bitching about being asked questions and ignoring, avoiding, resenting, ridiculing, and insulting both the interviewer and the questions. OK, so the guy created some really cool music and is a great guitar player, but as a human, he seems to be a complete and utter dumpster fire. He needs help. (Ask me how I REALLY feel about it! LOL)
The one redeeming (although heart-breaking) aspect of the film is the sections chronicling Bill Rieflin's terminal illness, and how it has affected him physically, emotionally, and philosophically. He remains upbeat through it all, even while coming to terms with and accepting the realities of his illness and impending death. It is uplifting and yet excruciatingly heart-breaking, all at the same time. He passed away very shortly after the scenes were filmed. Bill's sections, ironically, were the sole rays of sunshine and positivity in an otherwise dark and hard-to-watch film.
This film is like the proverbial train wreck - it's horrifying, but you can't look away.
He really is creepy, Ozzy just fakes creepiness. Or is there more to that?
@@oupahens9219 My guess: RF is very eccentric, but not evil, so no creep. He is very intelligent, and has been fighting record lables for decades. That can make you livid. It has been speculated that he has some traits of Aspergers, not sure about that, but I can see why people might get the idea.
But that does not matter. What matters to me is that he is the ONLY rock guitarist and one of the few musicians in any genre that never stayed in his comfort zone stylistically, commercially or technically. He thrives to challenge himself, his band and his audience since 1969. I find that very impressing!
I actually thought the scene you're referring to was quite moving. Fripp is certainly a deep well of emotion that he keeps very well under control. That long, long silence was included by the editor/producer. Viewers will make of it what they will. I didn't think it was "creepy" at all.
@@jlkoenig4377 I agree. It was interesting for me that many people in the audience were uncomfortable with that silence and started lo laugh. There is an intensity to him that many people are not ready to deal with.
RED 🌴🌴
Bruford’s favourite album!
where can we actually see it ?
If it's not showing in local cinemas you should be able to rent it using a streaming service
KC Is Not a band! KC is a PROJECKT!!
The ProjeKcts era was my favourite era. Not strictly Crimson, but still..
No clips of the film?
Hi Julian - unfortunately the film had just been released, so I had no clips to include. Tom
I would imagine leaving King Crimson was like a breath of fresh air for Greg Lake. Or should I say getting away from Robert Fripp.
Didn’t Greg have a problem waiting for Fripp during a reunion meeting , it really seemed to piss Greg off and I don’t blame him !
@@mikewest1542 from what I hear Robert Fripp was kind of a Evil Genius. Also a perfectionist ass wipe. He is also overrated as a guitarist when you compare him to people like Jeff b e c k Steve Howe Jan akkerman or Joe Satriani.
Where is this movie?
Hi Peter, it's no longer showing at cinemas where I live, but can now be be streamed at the following site, for example: www.imdb.com/title/tt10148150/
IMO none of KC's albums were as amazing as the original album, In The Court Of The Crimson King. Newsflash: Fripp wasn't involved in its creation.
You know you look like you could be Fripp's Brother right !! 😆
But I'm sure not a "Jack Ass" like Robert !! 🤣
I have been following this band since 1970' and have read everything about the band, in short he is and Odd fellow with many bad issues for others that he thinks are just fine !! He nearly destroyed Mel Collins soul years ago in the 70s and I was amazed Mel came back to KC in 2014' about. Only a few like Bill Bruford and John Wetton didn't let all of Fripp's crap bother them to much as they knew about Robert but they were blindsided when Fripp end the KC band of that era when they were ready to make it very big and Robert couldn't handle it and needed to get away !! Fripp always an Ass with little feelings for band mates but a Great musician and writer !! 🎶🎼
Hi Ronnie ... well, I'm not Fripp's brother, but that's an interesting comment (I guess!). Like you, I have been also following the band from the 70's. I have my 'Crimson Top 10' here also which you may wish to view. Thank you for dropping by. Tom
@@theyak7912 Yes, I will do that 👍
Tonight I'll write about seeing the band in Boston 1973' and 1974' I was lucky to grow up just outside of Boston and all the Top band played there and my older brother of 6 yrs was in the Music scene then working at a major music instrument store and we had access to great tickets to most shows so I'll tell you about that later ✌

@@ronniefarnsworth6465 Hey Ronnie, I have no problems with that at all !!!
For the amount of music King Crimson has made, they've produced only a handful of memorable tunes.
The majority of the music is redundant and boring.
I wish King Crimson were good enough musicians to get in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
You're joking, right? My guess is they are TOO good musicians/composers, and too independent, to even be interested in being a member of that ridiculous club.
The hall of Fame is a joke but for them not to be acknowledged by their peers and the music press who vote is rediculous
😂😂
Most droll.
I think one of the reasons King Crimson did not get into the Rock and Roll hall of fame is because the band changed members every few albums.
one of the greatest albums, one of the worst album covers.
REAL RUBBISH hard to find these days
