Propecia

Propecia contains the same drug used in higher dose to treat older men with benign enlargement of the prostate. At lower doses finasteride assists in treating male pattern hair loss also referred to as androgenic alopecia. Once expensive, the price of this drug fell dramatically once it lost patent protection and became available as a generic formulation.
Propecia counteracts the enzyme that converts testosterone into its active form or dihydrotestosterone. This later hormone is the active compound that causes hair loss typically beginning in late adolescence and the early 20s. Studies demonstrating its value beyond age 41 are lacking.
Propecia both treats hair loss and assists in maintaining hair already present. Only 2 FDA approved drugs are licensed for the purpose: Propecia or the generic finasteride and minoxidil formerly marketed only as Rogaine. Neither are a home run and both only mildly assist in those with the earliest stages of hair loss.
Questions exist about the role of Propecia in potentially causing more aggressive prostate cancers. Follow up of initial studies clearly indicate finasteride reduces the likelihood of prostate cancer overall and does not increase the incidence of more aggressive disease.
Issues surround the role of Propecia in male sexual dysfunction. A small number of men complain of erectile dysfunction, loss of libido and ejaculatory problems temporally related to the drug. On examination the incidence does not appear to differ between men receiving Propecia and those treated with placebo.
Pregnant women and those who may become pregnant should not touch Propecia tablets. The drug causes malformation of male genitalia in unborn fetuses exposed to the compound. Aside from this unique situation, side effects rarely pose an issue.

I have suffered post-finasteride for the last two years following a short usage of finasteride. The condition is horrid and I don't wish it upon anyone. Do not take this drug, you are playing Russian Roulette with your life.

I believe the Effectiveness of Propecia(Finasteride) after 5 years is about 65%, and after 10 years is about 50%.

Dr Landow you said propecia reduces scalp DHT by about 60%. What about the remaining 40% ? Would that not continue to cause hair loss?

when i started i did not notice anything... then, very slowly, i started having anxiety, than depression, then panick attacks, then low tolerance to stress, then suicidal ideation. when i realised it was because of finasteride, after years of use and sufference, i stopped it and when i stopped it, despite suicidal ideation and depression went away, new symptoms came out like facial lipoatrophy, dry sking, chronic fatigue. anxiety and low stress tolerance are still here and are very high. i stopped it in 2018.
