    Thank you for posting this. I’ve come to very much admire Fred Dibnah after only recently discovering his videos on CZcams. I am an American and his shows were not shown here. He was among the last of the old guard - The hard working fearless people who built the modern world. And are now ignored and belittled by the spoiled entitled young people. It is a shame that Fred’s house was not preserved as a heritage center. But it is somehow not surprising that it was seen only for its real estate value. That seems to be all the modern world cares about. Money. Thank God Fred Dibnah was different. He lived life on his own terms and what a rich life it was. And we are all blessed to have “known” him. Rest In Peace Fred.

    Thank you Urban Legend for uploading these pictures of Freds modest grave,he will never be forgotton ever for the joy he gave to us all over the years,the authorities have failed us in allowing his workshop and home to be allowed to degenerate into the state it is today,he was and still is a National Treasure who had great skills in working with tools and machinery and for that alone his memory lingers on,to have his home and workshop plundered in the way it has been is despicable,it is obvious that the soul has been ripped out of the place and things will never be the same ever again,probably the most unique person ever to appear on television and to appeal to us all because he was truly himself even before the camera,your video of his grave serve as a reminder of how fragile life is and how when we pass on what we leave behind is broken up so easily by those who simply do not understand or see money only as the answer with no respect,Freds memory deserves better and we here will not allow it to ever be forgotton and the joy he gave us all while he was alive.

      Thank you Angel.Whole heartedly agree with your sentiments.With all of the modernising which is vast taking place in Manchester and Greater Manchester including Bolton it is scandalous that Bolton Council could not of purchased Fred's estate for future generations.They considered him a Bolton Son but their effort was to have a bronze statue made up of him instead.
      When Fred's property sold for the first time it was bought for £250,000 a mere drop in the ocean.
      The second time it was sold the then owner whom I shall not name turned Fred's home into a tourist mecca charging £12,00 a head and £100,00 per night to sleep over in Fred's bedroom.No breakfast either.Then he started selling bits off whittling it all down.
      When this person wanted to resale he was asking for £1,000,000.
      It seems some do not respect heritage and are just out to make a quick buck.

    I lived next to the cemetery when Fred died. His house was close enough that I could hear his steam works going on in his back garden and his work yard-style phone bell ringing. The funeral was quite the spectacle. For a while afterwards there were a few occasions where a Fred fan knocked on the door or stopped me in the street to ask if I knew where his grave was and I would point them in the right direction. One chap had come from Germany to see Fred's work and hadn't actually heard that he had died, Fred's wife had given him directions to the cemetery when he turned up at the house.

    Fred Dibnah was the real deal an old fashion steeplejack who did everything by the Victorian book, but he was also about preserving the past of the industrial revolution and steam in general, I only wish I met the man himself I was only 11 years old when he passed away in 2004. I visited his home back in April with my Dad and bought a spanner he use to own and a signed DVD by Alf Molyneux who was best friends with Fred, the headgear that was part of his mineshaft is now owned by the Lancashire Mining Museum and they plan to restore it in honour of his memory. It's a massive shame the heritage centre has closed due to lack of funding and there's been no help from Bolton Council or the National Trust. Everything that was there has been auctioned off and as for the house, I think it will just become a residential dwelling.

    • @Dreamchaser68
      @Dreamchaser68  Před 5 lety +6

      Wulfgar Thankyou very much for your kind reply.I am thrilled Fred's Pit Head Gear is going to a museum.Thankyou for that information.
      Yes it is sad that the estate did not get the funding it needed from Bolton Council,well actually is a blooming crying shame.
      When I visited Freds house for the second time only a couple of days ago (14th August 18) but only to see it from outside as it is stood empty and to see it all stripped the way it has been it just made me feel hurt regards Fred's memory.
      I visited it first back in 2016 and again it was stood empty.This was just prior to Leon Powlskey buying up at auction.
      My journey with Fred was as like for most of us on the 79 chimney fell where he famously says"Did ya like that" covered by News of the North.The rest of course was history as he started to become a household name and then became national treasure with all of his knowledge and other Dibnah episodes of Fred's building of Britain and all the follow ups as to who he was
      Like you I dare say Fred's way of bringing it all to the common layman about how they did fells back in 1899 combined with all the rest of his knowledge was for me crucial in understanding my English (British) urban industrial landscape as I love our history and appreciate the hard work of the Victorians.Fred through the Telly and Dvds and books brought it all into perspective.
      The man was a one off and revisiting the Dibnah house all be it empty but being able to in my own way pay regard and respects for me released some of my grief over a character that has had a huge educational and also emotional impact on my life.
      I'd treasure that spanner my friend as it's story is part of an incredible story about an incredible man who became a much loved personality and teacher to the masses of our rich industrial past and all things steam..

      @wulfgar6749 Před 5 lety +5

      Don't you worry I will certainly cherish this spanner I know for a fact they were one of Fred's favourite tools which explains the gold spanner on the back of his grave. Even though I'll never get the chance to meet him at least I met his sons Jack and Roger Dibnah a few months ago at a steam rally event in Liverpool Albert Dock. On the subject of heritage my great-granddad worked as a railwayman for 50 years or so of his life at Hooton station until his retirement in 1967 at age 70, he received a gold wrist watch by British Railways for his years of services which I now own, never knew him personally since he passed away in 1982 at the age of 85 about 11 years before I was born but it makes me proud to know this because I'm a steam and railway enthusiast, I've always been fascinated by it ever since I watched Thomas the Tank Engine as a child which is based on The Railway Series books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son Christopher.

    I wasn’t even born when Fred Dibnah first appeared on British television, but I’ve watched most of his old stuff on CZcams of him laddering chimneys and bringing them down also. To me he is the epitome of a man, a true working man at that. I work with my hands to earn my money, self employed, served Queen and country, there’s no greater thing in the world for me than to go out every day, regardless of the situation or obstacles in front of me, and earn money for my family. When I watch Fred Dibnah it makes me sad, because I see in him qualities which are fast disappearing in British society - humbleness, work ethic, commitment to his craft, ingenuity and the ability to not take himself to serious. I hate to say it, but Britain is in many ways a much worse country than before. When men like Fred go, there’s nobody to replace them. Rest well Fred ❤️
