Im an american and have never heard of fred until about an hour ago and ive been binge watching videos about him since. You tube knows how to suck me in. That dude was rad.
Yes, he was, I live not far from where Fred lived, I shared his enthusiasm for our industrial heritage ,I never met Fred but I actually knew men like him from working in cotton mills, that's how men in the North used to be before being gelded by political correctness and a nanny state, our government now hates people like Fred, non pc, plain speaking MEN who would, these days, cause the establishments panties to bunch their bums and cause all kinds of offence. And, as a ps, Fred's house and all his stuff was bought by a sleezy bastard from Poland who then auctioned off all his hard work, including his traction engines,all gone now, house is now left to the vandals, that is what our country has come to, regards, a proud Brit.
The question is if fred got his pipe out would you smoke it

i used to watch him back when I lived in England in the 70s as a young lad. I just caught up with these videos again and realise he was a terrific man and to climb those towrs he must have had balls of steel!!
I watched some Fred Dibnah episodes when I was in the UK in 1987-88 and I was fascinated. Now more than 30 years later I discovered these episodes on CZcams. Again I reallly enjoyed them.
I was very sorry to hear that he died of cancer in 2004, the year my daughter was born.

When I was eight years old I saw Fred and it changed my life,I had/have a deep respect for his ability.I was surrounded by men like Fred they where warm and kind and funny It felt safe and fascinating around them I thought it would last forever as we all know now it faded with every passing year.When Fred died I was polishing brass on an old army billet stove in the workshop I just sat there and was lost in thought for a while,I'm fighting back tears as I write and think of the magical times I had growing up.Fred and I would have almost met a few times but I never did meet him he came to the next village fairly regularly I guess I did not make enough effort to find out when ,the sad thing is not only have we lost Fred but as time goes by I find I am looked upon with strange looks if I mention him in conversation now few seem to remember him and some that do seem to remember him as the guy who blew up chimneys and I despair,but even though he disliked modern ways we have youtube and I sit in the kitchen and watch him for hours.
Met him at his house in Bolton, through a mutual friend took my son Daniel with me aged 10 at the time amazed how many drive belts were in place over his workshops , and all his friends were helping out working on his traction engine , at the time he wasn't a well man but had time to crack a joke with us and a chat ......genuine down to earth bloke full of life even though he had terminal cancer ......should make a feature film of his life

I grew up in Northern Ireland and also with Fred when he was on tv I was glued to the box, such enspireing man R.I.P.
Loved Fred all my life from late teens to adulthood now. There is not a day that goes by where I dont think of him. I will have to visit his grave 1 day. The times we live in when we dont have Fred Dibnar in this world. Let's keep his memory alive. God bless you Fred and your kids.
Even today their is a great feeling of sadness since Fred passed. He is so loved and missed, wish he was still around, ☘️🇮🇪😢
Fred dibnah, was a man who lived a life that was true to his own passions and interest's. This is really the life we should all be in pursuit of. He respected everyone but didn't live an 'approval seeking life. There are too few people now that are brave enough to be themselves in this rapidly changing world of ours. Lets hope he will be remembered for many years to come. RIP Fred Dibnah.

It's really nice to read all the comments about Fred. He was a truly great man, and has left us with an indelible impression on our memories. I wonder if he ever realised growing up, that one day he would be lauded as a national treasure. It's a remarkable story.

I followed this man in OLD GLORY for several years (a heritage magazine from the UK, that I wish I could find again.) He imbodied a English renascence man, a bit rough around the gils, but someone I would’ve loved meeting. Would still love to meet his sons & wife & friends. He did much for steam hobbies & heritage, both here & the UK. You’ll be missed Fred Dibnah.......

He was a real Englishman as they were in those days. Honest, fun, funny, no airs and graces or envy for people better off and someone who was so comfortable in his own skin. Wonderful !

One of the greatest legends to ever live totally unique.
Fred continues to touch the heart of us all even after his passing,he left his mark in the world of steam forever ,for those who met him in person they are so fortunate but for the rest of us thanfully there is still a lot of material here to cherish in his memory,he was and still is a National treasure.
That statue needs to be pulled down like one of Freds chimneys. What a disgrace to the great man.
Salt of the earth was never more applicable than to Fred. It's ironic that his fame initially came from destroying the last remaining monoliths of Victorian industry that he loved, but his real legacy is creation. I was never really interested in engineering until I started watching Fred, so inspiring was his enthusiasm. A great man.

This should be used as a motivational video at the job centre and at the school for school leavers and at the colleges and university what an amazing man wish he was around when I was leaving school and when I was unemployed he was a real man

What got me about Fred was he could hammer bricks off a chimney all day and then climb down that tall ladder. I have split wood with a sledge hammer for my fireplace and I would drop things later as my hands were weak for quite a while. Fred was tough !!
Fred says in one of his audiobooks about the blisters he'd get from the really thick chimneys once they thickened out halfway down.

I don't know why the council or national trust couldn't of invested a million or two (small change in the grand scheme of things) brought his land and fulfill his dream of making it a showcase museum mine with steam exhibits. Would of benefitted the local area/schools and paid itself back in time with a museum shop and tours etc.

Fred Dibnah As i prefer to call him as ; FearLess Fred because he had the nerves of steel and to see him 200= foot up a chimney standing on loose boards and no railings around for protection makes him above anyone more to do what he did and he deserved a better statue than he got and maybe blackpool waxworks would have made a better job of him and not any back=street ones that tried to do of him as Fred was a first class man on all he did in his time of life ;

Hes a reflection of many characters that helped make Britain great...not frightened to have a go with an intelligence that will be rarely matched in his field....

I met the great man at Pickering Steam rally a good few years ago.
I regretted not having paper & pen to get his autograph.
Fred was a man born a century too late. It must have seemed like a desecration to fell those chimneys as he had such respect for the original builders

Fred will go down in history for the benefit of our future generations look back at their forgathers and know society is developing toward to multicultural nations and a better life for everyone as poverty is removed and antisocial behavior will have progressively reduced.

Fred Dibnah should have been knighted and his House turned into a Museum, He will be remembered as a Great Englishman.
He got an MBE from the Queen, his house was made into a museum untill last year when it was mostly sold off I think. Also many times people would pinch things out the garden.
The statue is awful, nothing like him. Needs replaced and the artist needs to change profession.

Let's face it, Fred was one slate short of a roof, but we're all glad he never repaired that one, because that's what made him special. I remember going to a steam fair many years ago and I popped into the beer tent for a liquid dinner and there was Fred, sat with his steam mates getting steamed. I was close by him when suddenly, up walks this old dolly and proceeds to bend his ear with horrific tales of her rheumatism and piles. Poor Fred, all he wanted to do was yap about steam but he stopped what he was doing and politely listened to her waffle on. I watched him and thought.... you'll do me Fred lad.

This world is poorer for not having Fred in it. Wonder tho how he would have got on in this health n safety mad world granted he would have been pushing 80 now so probably would not still be steeplejacking .
If children were told they could reach top management or even to chairman level and they had a keel interest in the apprenticeship on offer, they would be more inclined to take more interest in their future potential.
Joseph Landrut. All I wanted to do wAs get mucky fixing things with engines so went into an apprenticeship as a mechanic, still doing that 21 years later but I was only one of two that went into "mucky jobs", everyone else then and now just wanted to get rich, wear posh clothes and drive posh cars

Fred is ,not was a genuine bloke with so many skills the real shame is no one will ever take his place his garden looks so miserable with out him working happily on different jobs. If there is an after life I put money on him working and sayin did ya like that...
