Rolling Fenders?? Nope.... Cutting the Nova!!

- Tonight we eliminate the rear tire rubbing problem! I know many of you would say use a roller but I literally smashed the crap out of them with a sledge and they didnt move much so I hit the send button and went for it with a cutting wheel!
My new wheels and tires were just a little too wide on back of my 1971 Monte Carlo. I watched your video and as scared as I was I went for it, I still have the lip. I just took off about 1/4” and my driver side was closer/ tighter. The on,y thing I didn’t do was use the tape which I had forgotten about but I sanded, them primed and painted black on the raw metal. Anyway thanks for this video . It gave me confidence and it worked.
Awesome, I’m glad it helped out! What wheels did you end up going with? Do you have an Instagram where I can check them out?
I went with Cpp Ridler 695 18x8 on front and 20x10 on rear
Oh nice, it’s a bigger car so I’m sure those wheels fit awesome!
StevenWathke in instagram
It’s an a body so it’s no bigger than a chevelle. It’s a 71. Don’t confuse it with the land yachts of 73 -77
I’m glad your impressed by that.
Thanks! Going to do the same to my 86 mustang coupe. Dope nova by the way!
Thank you!
Get a wooden dowl little bigger than the gap between tire and lip. Lodge it in there and bump the car forward to make the dowel be pushed by the wheel. It rounds over that lip nicely.
I’ve done the ole baseball bat trick on a car I didn’t care about! I now have a fender roller :)
Nice vid. I'll be doing this to my '71 Demon in a few days.
Nice! Love those cars!
Demons are BADASS!
Thanks for mod’in one🇺🇸
How are those cuts holding up? Any issues?
Thinking about doing mine soon. I have a 70 with 275 60 15 Nitto 555Rs . They’re pretty chunky.
Cutting that lip helped out big time. It doesn’t rub and I could probably even cut a little more if needed.
Use a little air jig saw I rekon.
I'm curious if you noticed any changes in the paint after the grinder wheel produce a ton of heat?
I really wasn’t watching for that when cutting cause my paint sucks.. but it didn’t get hot towards the outer visible edge of wheel opening.
Looks like a good mod but I’m so afraid of cutting up my body despite the fact that it needs major panel replacements anyways. I just keep replaying scenarios of my hand slipping and cutting into the painted exterior that I want to keep
PMcGuffin I was a little worried I would slip cause that crap happens with me especially with grinders.. but it was such a small amount and it was needed really bad so the excitement of fixing a problem overshadowed the fear :)
I'd like that same wheel setup for mine, but I'm afraid with the disk brake kit adding 1/4 inch or so per side that the tires would rub way too much.. maybe if they made the wheel in a 5.5 backspace..
chevydriver207 what are you putting them on? Is it low like mine?
@@BillyFargon the front will be dropped about 1.5 inches with the control arms I bought, as for the rear i have brand new multi leafs going in with no plans yet to lower it.
chevydriver207 I have 3” drop coils in the front of mine so there is a good chance you would be ok :/
@@BillyFargon Awesome, I have a feeling mine will sit too high.. but then again I live in northern Maine so I cant lower it too much haha
chevydriver207 yours will be way more driver friendly at that height!
How much did you lower your car bro? Mines is lowered 5 inches. I'm running a 275x60/15 tire. I want to get the American racing rally wheel in a 18 inch rim just not sure if it will rub
Rear I am running Hotchkis 3” lowering springs. Front I’m not sure total.. it has drop spindles and qa1 coil overs.
I have seen a lot of novas running 18” rims with no issues. There are some good Nova Facebook groups that you could inquire with and I am sure several running the 18” rims would chime in :)
@@BillyFargon if only I had a Facebook lol thanks. I'm just worried about my car being so low in the rear but I'm sure it will fit.
@@moses_3109 you’re not missing out by not having Facebook :)
I feel my car is pretty low in the back, I can just barely get a low profile jack under the rear dif. So if you run 18’s that will be just a little taller than my 17’s.
@@BillyFargon right on I will let ya know how that goes brotha keep up the good content
Is that paint code 43 lime green metallic?
Roger Watkins yep, it was repainted years ago (factory color though).
Do your tires sit flush with the rims or would you say they protrude or concave?
I would say the protrude out a little past the rim. The don’t really bubble though.
@@BillyFargon awesome Billy! So 245/45/front. and 265/40/ front? Would you say your sidewalls are about even width?
Fronts are 17x8 (4-1/2") back space with 225/45/17, Rears are 17x9 (5") back space with 245/40/17. I would say they match well
Nice job! What size tires are you running? I have 295's on 15" rims and they rub just slightly on my 69
Rears are 17x9 (5") back space with 245/40/17 - I could technically squeeze another inch if it was all back spaced towards the inside of car... If they were a taller tire or bulged more I might rub again on that outer lip :/
How the heck did you fit a 295 on 15s in a 69 nova?
@@209chevymon On 15x10 5.5 backspace Chevy rally rims with a two-inch mini tub, stock 10 bolt rear
@@stanmendoza7871 mini tub... that explains it. I'm on 17x8 rally wheels 4.5" backspacing with 275 40 17s and my passenger side is rubbing despite doing all the fender rolling I can think of. I'm almost half inch further away on the driver's side. I do know my quarters were replaced not too long before I purchased the car, could be sloppy metal work or sloppy work from GM, probably both. Considering trying to hook a winch up to the quarter to see if I can just give it a little 3/8" tug
Yea. That's what inspired me to minitub my A-body.
One day it will happen!
@@BillyFargon I appreciate that. Tons of work though!
I agree! Watched lots of videos on it and know my car will be down a little while for it so I’m in no hurry. Probably switch to 4-link at the same time. So much work and money... ugh!
@@BillyFargon Great!
Merry Christmas
Thanks Sean! Merry Christmas to you as well :)
I was thinking about just using snips when i do mine
Its pretty thick, there are two layers of metal bent over each other. Post back if it works out. It may end up being a safer way to do it!
@@BillyFargon ok. I currently have 22s on the car now. I believe my tires are 265. But im changing the front tires. They came off a truck
@@BillyFargon hey i just checked on the rear in lip and yes the stanley fatmax metal snips works. I dont plan to remove but dice up and roll up. Dont want to separate the metals
Nice, relief cuts would definitely make the lip more manageable to bend up!
Man! You gotta be from Southern Louisiana.
Not even close.. Oregon :)
@@BillyFargon Ha! A Brother from another border!!
Those wheels are hot shit, man
Thank you! They were only supposed to be temporary but they grew on me :)
I used a wood bat pinch it between the tire and roll the bat easy peezy
I didn’t that back in the day on an old Jetta :)
Cleaned up nice. Looks like you should be good. Just stay away from the Detroit style pot holes LoL......or that bugger finger will be pointless
I literally just cringed and got a chill thinking about hitting a nasty pothole.. I'm sure it will happen at some point :(
It's not the lip that is the problem - it's the arch above the lip - you can see the rub mark in your video.
Agree that’s a problem, but... I had sidewall cuts from the lip I cut and I only have rubbing noises when too many people in car. Otherwise I have no rubbing anymore
@@BillyFargon just saying because I have the same problem on my ‘70 with 275/60R15 on 15x8 with 5.5BS
I clear that body line right now but if I wanted to go thicker or wider tire it would have to go inboard
I have 295 Mickey Thompson’s
On my 72’ Elco
Rubs only in corners
Still an issue
Already rolled🤷🏽♂️
Thinking of cutting
AND rolling Again...
