Devin Hester the NFL’s most prolific return specialist, historical Super Bowl kick return, journey to a gold jacket, Miami’s top 5 hurricanes & reveals a life-long lie he was embarrassed to share.
Most well known for his opening kick off touchdown return in Super Bowl XLI, Devin Hester carved a unique niche in football as a specialist who flew his way to the top of the history books. Hester played eight of his 11 NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears and is known as the most prolific return specialist in league history, he holds NFL records with 19 kick-return touchdowns, 14 punt-return TDs and 20 return touchdowns, which includes punts, kickoffs, missed field goals, fumbles and interceptions.
Growing up with turmoil and heartache as his father, who he never met until later in his childhood, battled an illness after being released from prison. In a difficult moment, Devin opens up sharing what the true cause of death was for his father after spending his life telling the world his dad passed away from cancer when in fact it wasn’t. The release of burden is heavy and the guys offer a sounding board.
One of the University of Miami’s standout players during his collegiate days, Devin talks about his choice of going to school there and the controversy surrounding his attendance and how his playing days shaped his career. Talking with Ryan, Channing and Fred, Devin names his top 5 NFL players with Hurricane roots.

I love how comfortable the guest are with Fred, Channing and Ryan. I've seen several interviews where the guest say they are sharing something for the first time.

Yeah I’d say Fred much moreso than Clark and a very distant 3rd on Channing. Channing is goofy and lucky to be on the show. He’s always saying a lot of dumb shit. It gets annoying listening to his antics, very predictable.

I thought Devin was a cool dude but this interview really solidified it for me. It hit hard when he said I had so much left in the tank, and how he wasn’t used properly. I hope he makes the HOF soon. He deserves it! He’s really an iconic player there’s no if’s and’s or butt’s about it.
So much of the NFL is about timing. Guys like Devin Hester, Michael Vick, Reggie Bush, etc would've been so much more prolific in today's game. They were dominant back in the day, largely on pure skill/God given athleticism. They didn't have a lot of scheme/design to fully take advantage of their gifts in the NFL. Imagine Devin Hester used the way Deebo Samuel/McCaffery are in San Francisco with Shanahan. Scheme is such a bigger part of football across the board, and can really maximize individual skillsets (Ex: Lamar's MVP season in first full year as a starter in offense tailored to him).
Why did he retire?? I wish they would have asked him that.

I feel you Devin. I found out that my father died of AIDS (IV drug user) when I received his death certificate. I was initially told he had cancer. I hid his cause of death for YEARS. I was set free when I finally shared it and I pray that is what you experienced.

Pivot did it again! Great interview. You actually made the young man so comfortable that he revealed a truth about his dad. And then to hear the sad story about what those college recruiters would do to try and end a career of a young man because he didn't commit to their school😮.
The Pivot has taken podcasting to another level. They allow their guest to share their stories without feeling like their being harassed ,pressured or interviewed. But more of a barbershop type conversation or safe space as you will. As Fred Taylor says everyone can podcast but not everyone can Pivot. Amazing episode fellas
He was definitely feared in the return game. I'm a chiefs fan. As much as I loved watching Hall return the ball, Hester had me on a different level when he returned the ball. All I remember in that super bowl opening kickoff was all the flashing lights.
I don’t know whether young folks today watching football understand how truly otherworldly DH was.
In terms of impact on the game, if DH doesn’t get into the HOF, honestly, the HOF loses all credibility in my opinion.

This interview was so good, that time went by so fast. I can relate my son was treated that way in high school. The Varsity coach wanted my son to move up. A coach at the time told him to stay down one more game and then he could move up. Sad to say he broke his hip bone during PRACTICE (dirty hit) and he was out! They withheld info and had us believing it was a hippointer Needless to say my son began suffering with arthritis symptoms early on. But God he play in college as long as he could til he needed another surgery. Happy for this young man. Nothing could break him. 🙏🏿

Hester is a legend. I remember vividly at the start of the Bears/Colts Super Bowl and how he got a Kick Return for TD off the first kick-off.

Devin big ups on that in our community we understood what aids was especially if a black man had it and was locked up. We were ignorant on it. Big ups in your clearing it up and explaining the best you could, being a kid during that time.

It's impossible to describe the feelings and emotions i would get when the defense forced a 4th down punt. Watching you walk on the field for a return was the greatest thing I've ever watched on TV. The amount of Joy, Happiness, and Excitement i would get when you took it to the house! I would literally be running around the house screaming! There will never be another player like you! Oh, what I would do to watch you field just one more kick, i miss you so much. 😭🧡💙
