  • Let's try an Auto in the Bell 407! This is honestly my first try with assists off. Gotta thank Thrustmaster for the awesome controls tho.

I nearly had a midair a few feet over the runway when I was doing my PPL/H. But ON the runway is a new one by me 😂

best explanation about autorotation i heard is was physical law about that. any autorotation things from maple seed to flat spin aircraft have the air drag same as disk with radius equivalent of blade longitude, i don't sure abut radius, may be diameter:) in any way, there potential kinetic energy is good, but not exactly what's going on. because this is not about energy, but about aerodynamic stuff:) so as long we allow to autorotate the rotor, so long we have analog of fixed wing with same square as disk of we see when this thing auto rotating. or half of that, as i said i don't remember there radius or diameter in the formula. we can make experiment found some maple seed create disk with same mass and drop it down, and then watch how slow they will... in msfs different models have a different physic:) if you land heli and close fuel, and then pull the collective up fast enough, some models will jump up, and rotor will slow down slowly, other models - however fast you pull the collective up, you just slow down rotor fast, but choppa still on the ground.... and second type of models hell hard to make autorotation, but first is too easy:) interesting how that stuff works in real. or probably in second type i have to disable governor lol... but not in all of them it's can make difference, because b-47 flyinside have no governor for default, and same - if throttle at idle no way to get heli up from the ground i mean after landing and when we still have good rotor rpm

Get the auto right in Jet Ranger and you can pick it up again and turn it around and put it down.
Get it right in a Robinson and you only spend a night or two in hospital. 😮😂

@Snak Pak I fly helos like a madman in DCS with my collective set up identical to yours. I bound the throttle to the slider right next to the big levers. Not especially realistic, but it works!

i guess best way is found throttle with rotary, that can be throttle for heli and throttle itself - collective. i use x65f is so convenient. but today i guess many analogues, even next degraded generation x56 lol:)

The secret is: you've got to yell "WHIRLYBIRD, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING? STOP ACTING LIKE YOUR MAMA" and about 98 percent of the time, your problems disappear, because it feels embarrassed. No whirlybird wants to be embarrassed.

This Snak Pak video helped me appreciate that the heli throttle is separate to the collective. With this I just did my first 100% engine out, very cool, skiddy runway landing! Hard settings. Here is my specialty czcams.com/video/jUStt6-ZBRw/video.html enjoy guys

Autorotation, so instead of using the engine to spin the blades through the air to create life, the air moving through the blades is creating lift. That statement makes more sense in my head, just can't articulate it properly lol.
    And
Didn't notice it in the video, and hopefully this doesn't sound stupid, but you turned the engine off, simulating engine failure, but do you put the gearbox in neutral, or disconnect the rotor from the gearbox/engine so that the rotor spins freely, without the drag on the system caused by a dead engine. Again makes more sense in my head.

That's a good question, helicopters have a device called a sprag clutch. It's just like the rear hub of a bicycle or the mechanism in a ratchet. Like on a bicycle if you put power into the pedals it'll drive the rear wheel but as soon as you stop pedaling the sprag clutch will allow the rear wheel to spin freely, It's also the device that makes that high speed clicking noise/zipping noise when coasting on a bicycle.

Good analogy from ISTJon. The blackhawk calls it the “freewheeling unit” but same thing
