    Great video! Only you must be careful with cyclic dive for 2 bladed rotors - mast bumping risk - my friend told me that! I saw on the pictures that Bell 407 is 4 bladed, so no problem there. Nice dive!

    I've been practicing and practicing the hardest thing for me is when you're coming into land and slow flight. Try and to keep the helicopter moving forward slowly to your landing spot. I have a hard time with that

    May I ask; do you think MSFS is a reasonably accurate approximation of real rotorcraft? I would like to hear your opinion in detail. Especially on the standard G2, 407 and the CowanSim MD500.

      This is a great question and I think the best way to answer is with a video. I'll try to have something out soon on this topic.

      That video is a great idea. I haven’t got the MD500 yet but it’s on my list. My worry with direct linkage controlled helicopters is that the lack of control feel will be a realism killer for me.

      @@SnakPakFlight I am an SEL pilot with no real life rotor experience. I was previously using MSFS to practice IFR and to learn how to setup and program airliners from Cold & Dark through VATSIM flights.... technical stuff. Once the helicopter update dropped late last year however, I became a lot more engaged in the sim and almost doubled my hours by flying helicopters. On full realism there was a steep learning curve and it took almost 20 hours for me to get competent with hovering, taxi, quick stops, landing and well controlled box-pattern practice. It was more fun than real life fixed wing stick and rudder learning because it was so challenging, and because it allows so much more freedom in the sim.
      The odd thing is that I was always disappointed in MSFS fixed wing "stick and rudder" handling because it didn't feel very realistic, but now I love to fly helicopters working on maneuvers all the time. Without actual flight time in a helicopter it is impossible to say how much of that is because I have no experience/frame of reference, or how much is due to helicopters just being a more inherently engaging and rewarding experience.
      I am always looking for the opinions of high hour, multiple certification helicopter pilots but have yet to see one give an honest in depth assessment. I see a lot of people weighing in or asking about flight dynamic realism, but most are sim-only pilots and a handful come from the R22 only and those Robinson pilots don't seem to agree. Their opinions are oddly either too dismissive or too glowing, and I get the sense that comes down to either the horrible bugs from the initial release, or guys who are scared to say something negative lest it harm the community and send us back to the post-FSX dark ages.
      A big question I have is whether I am better off going to DCS just to practice maneuvers and learn helicopter flight dynamics, with no interest in combat. Knowing how the different options compare, either sim to sim or model to model, will probably help a lot of people who are also new to helicopter simming.
      I scoured CZcams when learning to fly helicopters in MSFS and honestly your videos helped me understand helicopter dynamics in the most "dense" style of communication. People are drawn to flight simming for different reasons and have different attitudes, so seeing a real pilot who wasn't a gear hound and explaining the way an instructor would but not taking the sim TOO seriously was perfect. A few months in now, I would value your opinion the most.

      That said. First time hovered without drama in a flight sim was in a VR motion rig with proper cyclic and collective. Something about muscle memory that can stick with you even decades after flying the real thing.

    "... Uppy Downy stick... ", my level of piloting knowledge
    This makes sense in my head what I'm trying to ask, so, when you are at low level, like where you have the ground effect, does the helicopter get buffeted around at all by the downdraft from the rotor.
    I tried looking at the green coloured lines when you have the airflow dynamic turned on, but couldn't work out if it would affect the aircraft

    • @SnakPakFlight
      @SnakPakFlight  Před rokem +1

      No. The induced flow of air hits the ground and jets out the side. It almost acts as a "cushion" so to speak, but aerospace engineers tend to shy away from that word.
