Back in the mid 90’s, my Guard unit was involved in removing equipment & goods from Panama before the Canal handover; so our two week Annual Training tours were spent there. One tour myself & a few others were invited to go observe some Navy training in the Canal Zone, involving a Blackhawk ride from Howard AFB.
We were halfway there when one of those ‘important lights’ came on. We sat down next to the Canal & got out while the Flight Engineer & Pilot put their heads together trying to diagnose the issue. After abt an hour, we all piled back in after the engine was run up for five to ten minutes. We then made a very fast & low flight back to Howard.

The helo they replaced had only one engine. I flew on them as a passenger. I had my fingers crossed for the whole trip.

Wonder if the average American knows that Congress only approved the coast guard’s purchase of the AS365 if they re engined it with American made lycoming 650 hp engines to replace the 850 hp Ariel’s that it came with, which were already underpowered for that aircraft. Cusco’s the the coasties who operated that horribly underpowered and grossly unreliable lycoming engined helicopter. Was even more of a boat anchor than most Bell products…which is saying a lot.

Interesting. A running landing due to inability to hover on one engine. Training is so paramount!

Why risk over torque? Running landing above ETL was the safest and best choice.

@@kevinmcteigue6022 Absolutely. Also, on one engine while at low altitude when landing, the risk for a power-off situation increases. Keep some forward speed.

CG helos often do running take off and landings. They are very heavily loaded in rescue configuration
