  • This video shows how to install an 18 inch and 24 inch stainless steel grab bar in tile. The fasteners that were used are Wing-Its that are available at home improvement stores. These grab bars are also available at your local hardware store- they have one with or without end caps that conceal the screws available depending on the finished look that you want. Wingits sells a special self centering carbide bit for installing in tile and other wall coverings. Much better than that hole saw you are using.

Good video, some more tips. Tape the escutcheons to the bar so they wont rattle around. If you have the templates just measure from the inside of one flange to the outside of the other than transfer the measurement with a level to the wall and center the template centers over the marks. No need to try to mark all the holes while trying hold a bar in place. If drilling with an arrowhead bit the holes are undersized and it can be a real bear to get the anchors through the holes. Don’t try to pound the anchor in, will crack the tile. May need to enlarge the holes so the anchors don’t get stuck. Be sure to buy the wing-its that are made for the wing-it bars. The standard stand alone wing-its anchors plastic “covers” don’t have off center holes and the escutcheons wont cover the anchors. You’ll have to trim the plastic to fit under the escutcheons. Not easy to do.
