Is MBA worth it in 2024? In this video, I try to answer this question along with telling you the reality of MBA from IIM. MBA is popular among people who are looking to get into management roles in premiere organizations after their graduation and some work experience. But should you go for MBA without work experience or not is of little importance when MBA placements are at record low and even IIM Grads are struggling to get placed.
Organizations like IIM Lucknow are using their alumni network strength to place some of the students who could not get placed earlier. This leads to a lot of problems for people who get into MBA because they want to get a good job right after graduating. But the dark reality of mba often remains hidden from the masses. The reality of IIM placements and also the reality of MBA packages is far less shiny than what comes across in the news.
This video will help anyone who is wondering if they should do MBA in 2024 or not. This is not the right time for MBA as far as return on investment is concerned. However, whether MBA is a trap vs not is left to the viewer. MBA can lead to massive education loans which you cannot pay without having a chance at a decent job. If IIMs are struggling to place their graduates, it is obvious that MBA packages or MBA salaries for those who got placed is also going to be lower than others. Hope you find this video valuable, see you in the next one.

I agree what you said, and certainly an MBA makes sense only for people with some prior experience irrespective of his/her field. I know some of my colleagues who did their MBA (even the IIM) ones right after their UG degree ,got a job and than became clueless once the work pressure and unfamiliarity hit hard. Also given the fact recently the number of amateur jobs have gone down, eg. Even entry level SDE positions now require 3+ yrs of exp for some reason.

giving CAT 24 is like 1yr gap .
Should i give cat 24 (without work ex and no internships) or take another gap yr for CAT25 (alongwith some internships)?

@@Oswald07 Maybe yes. But most importantly try to find a strong reason so as to why you want to do an MBA and also the specialization that you would like to target. Many people join IIMs for the sake of placements but later on are fired due to wrong expectations or low performance due to immense work pressure (You can see all of them turned as fulltime youtubers ). So choose a background to specialize in and become the best in that, that way you would be able to justify the high package paid by the company and won't feel insecure.

@@darshantawte7435 how do i know which specialization i want to do without actually experiencing that??
my mba reason is i want to know me i.e "what i want to do" as you know mba from iim is a generalised degree means in 1st yr you are exposed to all domain i.e finance/marketing/hr/consulting etc
so i will be able to find which domain is best for me
as you see i am doing CA (finance domain) and after experiencing i know i didn't find myself perfect fit for finance domain as i didn't like finance domain at all.
Also another reason is that i feel that i want to do a successful business in near future
IS THIS A VALID AND STRONG REASON FOR DOING MBA???
Also can you suggest me whether should i directly appear for cat24 or cat24 as a fresher or should i do job and get work experience of like 1-2 yrs then do mba after that???? i m confused 😕

    1. Top B-schools struggling to place their students: True, the job market is tough right now, but the brand value of IIMs pays off in the long run. Even during COVID, the top IIMs didn't face significant difficulties and are still thriving. Despite lockdowns, SP Jain, IIM l , FMS and many other top B-schools have released placement reports for the current batch, and while there may be a slight decrease in placements, it's still decent enough to kickstart careers, with opportunities for growth in the future.
Also, ISB is the only school charging over 40L in fees, and he only mentions this college as a reference. Mind you, the average fees of any IIM or B-school is around 25L, with an average package of 30L+, so you're still getting better ROI. Plus, you pay fees for 2 years and get a salary for as long as you work, not just for one year, and you also get incremental increases. Furthermore, if you're continuously mentioning the top few colleges of ISB, then mention FMS, which charges only 2L in fees with a 30L+ package. Show both sides of the coin, buddy. This is blatant manipulation.

Hi Pavan, I cannot completely agree with one of your points that if the placment situation in Tier I B schools is grave now, the situation in Tier 2 and Tier 3 will be even worse. I would say the supply demand chemistry of Tier 1 colleges are fairly different from that of Tier 2, Tier 3 colleges. The profiles that the company come for in Tier 2 and Tier 3 colleges are different. A few examples can be IT Business Analyst, Sales profile in BFSI or Operations job in BFSI. Basically a role far away from the word "strategy", "M & A" bluh bluh. Such roles cost less and hence company will be able to offer. Also such roles are available due to organic businss growth of the companies even if there is no major expansion happening in the companies. But once kick started with such role and profile, the individual from Tier 2 and Tier 3 college has all possibilities and resources available in the universe to help him throttle through professional career. In a era of information, an individual from Tier 2 and Tier 3 college can avail all kind of certifications, short term courses to enrich and equip himself along with his ongoing job role. Career is a long journey and the storm of Tier 2 and Tier 3 event in a candidate's life may not work act as an eclipse all throughout his life. Obviously hard work and availing the right opportunties can wipe out the eclipse of having a degree from Tier 2 or Tier 3. I have many many examples is what I can say.
I am just sharing my experience as one the perspectives. But many thanks for our informative video.

all points are very trivial, its still worth it to do MBA considering your college is well known and reputed!
You go to any other country and do MBA, you'll face the same issue, yes, regarding the expereince req I can agree but it doesnt matter in the long run!

I have completed by B tech from India and MBA from Philippines. By virtue of my journey I can say that what ultimately matters in the long run is the "skills" that you develop.
Hence think about how MBA would help you gain those skills and be where you want to be in life. Don't just blindly get into an MBA degree (especially for highly sucessfull engineers).

@@penumarthikasi2387 it is highly contexual and depends on which path that you take after MBA. If you are building a job/ career you need the hard and soft skills in that area (e.g. Analytical skills, Market and competition analysis, Customer interviews and insights). Similarly if you are taking a entrepreneur route you would need to understand/ craft how to create value proposition, manage money and team (basically business and product building skills)

Great Research! Work ex is indeed an overlooked aspect when it comes to Indian b schools and it will definitely have an impact during recruitment(for someone who's trying to make a pivot) especially during the downtimes which is clearly highlighted in the video.
One more important point mentioned is the increase in class size. One may look at this as a positive aspect thinking that now we have a lot of people to network with. That is true to an extent, but recruiters can't give a job to everyone

  • @behen_code5674

Okay .. My counter argument is , although the immediate situation is bad.. after couple of years you can easily reach to high end of 6 figures to even 7 figures if you have an MBA esp from schools like ISB & IIM ABC. You'll get access to opportunities which is not available to just about anyone. So in the long run your ROI is going to be good.

Hi Pavan, thanks a lot for the content, appreciate your efforts on the same.
I hold the perspective that two years duration is too high for an MBA and that an MBA without workex is significantly less advantageous for a student.
Also, recession goes quite hand in hand with the growth of the education sector, which may be related to the fee increase combined with reduction in annual CTC. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
As per Financial times global report on value of money for B-schools, the ISB reported the highest jump in salary post graduation and IIMA offered the best career progression, ahead of Stanford. (The methodologies are debatable, that's a different story). The batch strength of ISB as you mentioned is quite scary.
Requesting to make a video on doctorate in management, considering duration, corporate opportunities (vs academic) at global level. Thanks, this is great!

See, it's totally based on your perspective... If you want to bet then you can and if you want to drop 1 or 2 year its totally upon you... No one know what will be the situation after 1 or 2 years... Maybe we can see a huge spike or maybe more decline it's your choice... The people entering 2022-24 doesn't know these going to happen because at that time situation was different things were good... So what if entering in 2024 or 2025 will end good ??? It's on you... And one more thing i want to highlight... If you come under top 25% students in the class you are still getting around 25-30lpa which is not bad... Once the situation make u-turn you'll get back on track asap... It's totally your choice... I am going inside in 2025 no matter what... I will work my ass off i will get myself in top 25% i will do whatever i can to get highest possible opportunity ❤

Agree with you but what i am seeing in the market is fresher from good b school in India earns more than 3,4 year experienced professional who has more skills and have more impact on project. I personally observed in my team that IIM guy who makes same ppt and doing same work gets paid 2X more than my other team mate but in actual that experienced team mate (not from IIM) gets lot of appreciation for his good work and more project value addition. Brand Matters !!!

It's about adding value. I have around 5.5 yoe and work at a US based software company, make about 50 per annum, and I feel Software Engineers directly add value to the product. On the other hand, a lot of PMs and PGMs in my team can't even write the stories properly because of lack of in depth understanding of the product. If a few PMs and PGMs are let go, it won't have much impact. However, if ANY software developer leaves our team, it would seriously affect the project
