Horseboating in Stone

  • Ex-FMC horse boat Verbena (originally called Vienna, but renamed in the first world war for obvious reasons) is towed through Stone by Danny the horse - and in the more difficult sections by the 15 horse Bollinder powered Kangaroo. Whats the saying? 1 horse on the bank is worth 10 in the water...

Thanks very much for your very quick and interesting reply to my post yesterday on "Historic Narrowboat Pair on Coventry Canal carrying Coal". As you posted that video 7 years ago, this was a really nice surprise! It also led me to this horseboating video, which I'm hugely enjoying, especially the bit from 4.11. The way they take all way off the boat by putting the warp around the post on the gate, and then using the pull to close the gate behind the boat, is just so incredibly clever. I never cease to be inspired and humbled by "tricks of the trade" like this - so ingenious, so skilled, and passed down the generations by example.

Brilliant! Thanks for the recommendation ... I can skip my day out with the Black County Working Horse crew and the distinct possibility of them trying to dress me up and put me to work!
The folks I know have some sizeable horses who I'd love to see working a loaded boat... bit of a nightmare with all the boats moored up I can only imagine how difficult it would have been back in the day!

+Matt Allen boats were not moored on the towpath in working days, sometimes maybe unloading. Mops sit on cans to stop the line from catching. Smaller horses were the order of the day, to fit under the bridges and I guess having a lower Center of gravity would aide the 'oss too.

Great information thank you... it really is fascinating and little nuggets of detail make all the difference!

@butlersowl Yes, he'd only done wheeled stuff before. Not quite used to starting slowly, and then keeping a steady pace.

Interesting the Vienna / Verbena connection.
I have a picture of the same lady steering Vienna at Braunston HBS 2010 sporting the same hat !

I think I might just ride that horse instead of walking him along, lol. Ho looks like a good horse.

Rather rough putting the poor horse's bridle on!!!! take the headcollar OFF and put it back on OVER the bridle.
