A lot of the viewers to this channel are overseas and I often get asked if foreigners can own narrowboats. The answer is “yes” and in this video I talk to an American couple who’ve done just that and are about to set off on their canal travels. With many thanks to Bob and Jayne Fulton aboard NB Voyageur.

I have to admit, after watching your videos, this American desperately wants to experience "the cut". I like the non touristy way of traveling. This would be an amazing vacation.
Harrison Ford did.
NO !!!
What pleasant people. May they putter about pleasantly and discover much that is fine.
@David of Yorkshire that and this is clearly their retirement. Slow and easy is what they want now after a busy life.
And even the hustle and bustle of daily American life, floating along down your canals does look like a nice little break from all the chaos.
We had the pleasure of meeting Bob and Jayne earlier today on our bit of the “Cut” We walk and run along the canal is just perfect so on our walk with the dog it just so happened Voyageur appeared next to us so we walked and talked. When Bob pulled over, we were invited aboard.
They are lovely folk!
This couple is living my dream.
God bless ‘em.
I really enjoyed this video. I am fascinated with cultural perspectives and realities of mixing cultures. I think in these days, its good for Britain and US to find friendship and understanding.
I think so to good thinking
What a lovely couple. So nice that they feel right at home on our waterways.
As ever, David, another interesting and informative video.
What an interesting interview! Great idea for a vlog. It was amusing to hear him say “advertisements” with the British pronunciation.
This fellow American wishes them all the best in their travels. 🙂
The Fultons are such nice people! Thank you for sharing!
I have lived next to the tennessee river for 47 years. Grew up around the water and have worked on towboates for 23 years. I would love to live over there on a narrow boat. Thanks for all the great videos and hello from the 🇺🇸
Lovely people , I hope you enjoy your adventure , welcome to the UK .
What a delightful couple.
As an American that is totally in love with the British Canal life, vicariously sadly, it is great to see those that can realize the dream of enjoying a narrowboat. I only stumbled upon this life researching American Waterways, for what is called in the US the Great Loop. Maybe someday the wife and I can make our dream come true.
I am from Canada and I love the idea of this! I would love to own a canalboat one day!
The canals of the UK are lovely. It reminds me of a story like Wind in the Willows of some other Edwardian era novel.
What a lovely couple.
This is narrow boating. It's not where your from. It's where your head is at.
People like these and of course the vlogger, makes you want to get into the life
What I like is that you are nosy in just the right way.
Cruising the cut sounds like a nice way to pass the time during hurricane season.
30 year old Aussie here, lovely people and a great lifestyle. As a single bloke I cannot wait to get over there and rent a narrowboat and just relax when I want to and socialise when I can.
Russell Coight did you enter the competition.
If I suddenly became rich I would be hard pressed to not pick up and move over to England and buy a Narrowboat. The slow pace and the sense of adventure is something I long for. And I could also indulge my interest in British Railway history.
Same here.
Yes, Yes you can. We're Americans and my parents live 6 months out of the year on their narrow boat in the UK.
I'm a Texan. I've owned a narrow boat for two years and spent three months each of the last three Summers on it in the UK. I love it.
How do you prep the boat for the "off-season"?
Whereabouts in Texas? I have a sister near Houston.
@@CP140405 Yeah where do you live Michael? Would love to buy you a beer and chat about it.
You still have that touch for doing great interviews!
david's interviews are great, i agree. Totally Non Invasive, more like a normal flow of conversation between two people, which I must say is quite rare these days! Great Interview and a lovely couple....
We are Australians and we cruised the canal for 2 years on our narrowboat, it was a wonderful experience!
How hard or easy was it to organise vias for that length of time?
As a Bostonian with family in Guilford this speaks volumes to me. I always had the dream of retiring to England but after watching this video among others of yours i think retiring on a Narrowboat might take the cake for what i would love to do. Keep up the relaxing informative videos!!
I'm glad you made this video. I am retired military and have become very interested by these VLOG's and the possibilities of purchasing one. Hence my interest in this particular vid.
the audio quality on this video is absolutely fanbloodytastic, well done!
Lovely couple. Enjoy your travels and broader Blighty.
Very nice American couple.
Heart warming story and wish them well on their stay and travels in England.
A very usefull vlog for those that are not based in the UK. Nice one David..
As a former expat from the US who lived in London 2004-2007, I have always had the insatiable desire to move back to the UK. Whenever I can, I make a return visit on average once annually. I don't think I can ever rest easy until I get back there. I have talked to other Americans who have spent a good amount of time (and even short visits) in the UK and almost without exception, they all feel the same insatiable desire to return. I call it the London syndrome. One day, on a future return visit to the UK, I would love to get my first experience on a canal boat and see what it's like for myself. It's no surprise to me that people from overseas can potentially buy a canal boat. Whilst living in London, I attended a church whose congregation were largely foreign expats (many of whom were Americans in fact). One American lady in that church actually lived on a narrowboat. During my frequent walks all over London, I would often see those boats and wondered what they were for and what was inside them. Watching your videos really piques my interest. And yes, I still use British English pronunciations, spellings, expressions, etc. on occasion. Once a Londoner, always a Londoner.
London and the rest of the UK are two entirely different experiences. This has always been the case but more so now than ever before.
Done one trip in 2016 and had a blast, always looking to afford another trip to the UK and the cut.
Great interview David! Nice to see people from around the world who share the passion for narrow boats. :)
Another Aussie who thanks you and your very enthusiastic guests. I found your channel via a random CZcams recommendation, watched a few, and then went back and am currently watching them from number one. I never believed I could be so entranced by someone going around at three miles an hour.
This particular "VLOG" gives me hope that one day I may be able to give you a wave as we pass.
Glad you like them
I would love to move to the UK but it is so hard if you don't have a huge amount of money to back you up. My son lives there and visiting is just never enough. The Broads are close by and I have seen so many beautiful boats on our travels. To live on a narrow boat is on the top of my bucket list. Love these videos as get a real feel for how it could be. Thanks so much.
I live on one of the oldest and still working industrial canals in the United States. Look up Bellows Falls, Vermont. Fascinating history and a very small village. Most houses are Victorians. Unfortunately, the taxes are killing everything that was good. But most of us at the historical society work very hard to keep stuff up to snuff.
Too Bob and Jayne , who both fell in love with the narrowboat lifestyle and loving it!
What lovely people.
These are the kind of normal decent Americans that do their country credit - sadly not shown on news casts of late
As someone who's been in America his whole life, and quite frankly never left his time zone (-6 GMT... although I have been all over this time zone) don't believe everything you see on TV. Yeah, we're dealing with a lot of issues right now, but from what my British friends tell me, not anymore than you guys are. I would say that these guys are representative of most Americans when it comes right down to it.
I’m a “Yank” and am currently looking at used boats- I don’t know how I’m going to live in the UK, but I’m getting ready 😅 Great channel ❤️👏
Thank you
Truly enjoyed this VLOG.....I am a South African and have done 2 trips on a hire boat from Oxford and it is on my bucketlist to still do a trip in winter on the cut! Thanks for your VLOG....I've seen them all. Regards from Cape Town!
It sounded like he liked the boat and loved the people and culture. Pretty high praise indeed. Thanks for the video.
This needs to be said. you are amazing at naming these videos
Thank you
very nice people. I hope they enjoy it.
Lovely couple, interesting conversation...and I really liked the flowers, so bright and cheerful.
Not because they and myself are American, but this has been a nice departure from the norm of vlogging....almost roaming reporter (which of course you are well suited for). Not to be taken that I do not enjoy your vlogs, but another point of view is always enjoyable. Thanks so very much....now go work on the van!
Welcome to our canals Bob and Jayne. I'm a year-round liveaboard based on the Kennet and Avon. Hope to see you sometime.
What a nice couple.
Great video, nice people. Excellent presentation, Thank you
Very nice video although I thought you let him get away a bit with his "can't get a bank account" answer. I would have liked a bit, just a bit, more detail there as to the specific hurdles they needed to cross. However, having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed the interview. Well done you. Good idea.
It is very simple. You need a bona fide UK address where you can evidence that you pay utility bills and have a track record of living there and paying bills. This is both an anti fraud and money laundering measure imposed on banks by the regulators. It is tough on the ordinary joe.
Excellent video bro and what a lovely couple too. All the best from a frosty morning in NZ
I hope they have a lovely time.
Well, I was jealous at the start and then he said, "We're home.", and that just makes it all the more endearing. Glad you met up with them and shared.
I missed if they said what part of the US they're from, may need to review.
Very heartwarming. David if you are still in contact with this couple it would be lovely to see a follow-up, now that they have had their boat for almost 4 years, to see how they have been getting on.
They’ve since sold the boat after two years when they couldn’t get here due to covid travel restrictions
What a shame that they had to sell. Hope you are both happy and well, Bob and Jane.
The States had hundreds of canals. It's to bad they were all covered up and placed in huge pipes. Well for the most part any way. Canals in the States were the biggest transport system before the railroad. There were canals in Boston, Baltimore, DC, PA, Va, And the list goes on.
Oh I am so happy I found your blog, and am enjoying seeing your trips through the cuts.
Ah, yet again the importance of homework! Thanks for another insightful Vlog. It seems you can take the Reporter out of the Newsroom... but he's still sniffing around getting a story for us 🎥 🙂 👍
Lovely couple. Great interview CC...Thank you.
Hi David, I'm as Aussie who has always hankered for pottering about on the canals. I'm planning a holiday! These folk have answered a lot of questions for me. I thoroughly enjoy your vlog. All the best cobber. Rob 😎
I recently watched your videos on vintage and old engines in canal boats and I must have watched each 5 or 6 times in the last 2 days. I love them. If you have the opportunity to make more videos on engines or working boats please do. Love every video. Keep up the good work
There will be more of those but not immediately - the last mini-series only just finished! Sometime though :-)
CruisingTheCut That is quite alright. I’m not bothered exactly what type of narrow boating content you produce whatever it is I’m sure that I will enjoy it. Thanks :-)
What an absolutely lovely couple. It was so interesting to hear their story and I hope they have a fantastic time in their travels. Thank you for sharing their story with us.
Interesting couple, came over to help their friend research her heritage, what a sweet gesture! Jane mentions Zelanders Aussies and South Africans! Ahh the lovely Anglosphere!
Thanks for this one, David, from one of your U.S. fans. I will continue to dream of an idyllic UK vacation, puttering along the cut in a beautiful, cozy, spider-free hire boat....
Loved this interview thanks so much David.
What a lovely couple - great interview, thanks
Glad I found this channel,Ive seen these type boats a few weeks ago in the river Shannon here in Ireland as I was passing by.
What lovely people. Thanks for sharing their story!
Thanks for watching!
wonder whare they are now?
How lovely to meet more boaters and from the USA. As always the content and quality of your videos is fantastic. Thanks.
A very good interview without the hesitation between words and sentences that some interviewees suffer from.
WOW so glad to hear they are enjoying it so much! Great video David :-)
This is Brilliant! Such an interesting couple well filmed and relaxed.
Great video, i love your style, what lovely people, you are speaking to, I wish them every happiness here in their new narrowboat adventures.
Lovely couple, enjoy your times here.
Great interview & answers for them & your viewers. I learn something new on your videos everytime I watch them. Just all around a great video. You do a wonderful job. You have the touch in about away that others try to get it & they never do.
Keep it up. And thank you for sharing your videos.
Chris
Lovely video, lovely couple, thanks Dave for telling their story.
Nice to see and hear about people from different countries joining the community and having a go at the locks
Hope they both enjoy exploring
I love hearing peoples stories! and adventures!
A really enjoyable interview David, thanks for that. It's always a pleasure to see people enjoying themselves and having their dreams come true after putting the effort into doing their homework.
Very interesting! Nice to hear a new topic.
Im from Texas and recently came across your channel and absolutely love the narrow boating lifestyle. Thank you for these videos
Somehow this one slipped past us but we are so glad to have found it! We are Americans as well and have almost the exact same dream with the exception of traveling in an RV here in the US and possibly, HOPEFULLY, we can do both and realize our dream of living on a narrowboat! This video was very inspiring! Might I add, what a fantastic job of interviewing from you! We so love this channel and I'm sure you've noticed many comments from me as of late. We've been getting a lot of rain here which has allowed me the time to be indoors and to comment. Hope I'm not pestering! Hope this comment finds you well. Btw, my wife immediately recognized the tune Bob was playing on his guitar...Joni Mitchell, Paved Paradise put up a parking lot. Loved this video!!!!
Not pestering at all!!! :-)
What a nice couple. A very enjoyable video thanks.
What a lovely couple David and your expertise produced a very informative beautifully edited interview. Congratulations again.
Another great vid, you never disappoint..
I learned such a lot from that video David, many thanks.
Brilliant interview. Bob and Jane looked so comfortable chatting with you, and have added to my confidence that I'll be bale to do exactly what they are doing...soon. Well done.
One of our best holidays was a hire boat for a week on the Trent. Absolutely memorable! Your vlog lets us relive it and maybe inspire us to do it again. (from Melbourne, Florida)
I became fascinated by the British canals on my visits from the US to see members of my mom’s family. When dining at a pub at Barnwell, we watched someone going through the locks and I couldn’t look away. The daughter of Mom’s cousin lives with her son in a narrowboat on the Fens of East Midlands. I follow her posts all the time. Then I found your vlog and want to watch every post. Thanks and Happy New Year!
Very good topic. I'm from the new world colones and for a little over a year I have been slowly making moves as to allow me to head over in 2021 for a few years running up and down the canals.
This answers a lot of questions I have had for a long time. Moving to the UK and narrowboating is little more than a dream at this point in my life, but there is hope! Ta!
How interesting! Thank you for sharing 😊
That was really interesting and thanks for taking me along
What a lovely couple the interview technique was excellent , good luck to our American friends living their dream 6 months of the year on the cut in their narrowboat .
Lovely couple,i hope their troubles are small and the adventure continues for many years. People like this make the world a better place.
Great video David. As a person approaching my retirement, a few years yet but ya gotta have plans, it is great to see a couple enjoying their life and doing the things that make them happy.
Hats off to two very lovely people. They are living my dream and best of luck to them, thanks David for sharing this. Regards, Geoff.
What lovely people!
They are indeed
Hi David,
I asked you about Honda outboards vs. diesel inboards. You made very valid points. Thanks.
Ed
Lovely interview David of two lovely people. I've watched this episode before don't think I left a comment, I'm doing catch up, trying to find where I got to before I got distracted and watched your other amazing Camper Van build adventure channel but I'm in no hurry and every chance of catching up through your impressive array of travelogues now we are in shut down. Shut down is a bit ridiculous to me but moving swiftly on. I am resisting the temptation to skip forward though preferring to follow the stories but I did see you successful bread baking which was very entertaining. Hope you are keeping yourself occupied and I am sure you will emerge with your sanity in tact.
Excellent interview packed with information. Thank you.
Great video David "Its always nice to meet nice people"
awesome, i'm us citizen, and this is exactly what i was hoping to learn
