Truthfully, England don't really have a 'massive' footballing rival anymore. Scotland have been poor for too long, and England have been poor enough in major international tournaments that we haven't recorded the big wins required over other big footballing nations (France, Germany, Spain, Brazil etc.) to really develop a rivalry with any of them. If we manage to send an Italy or France packing at Euro 2024 then a rivalry may start to develop, but I can't see us having a Brazil-Argentina or Germany-Netherlands or France-Italy type rivalry for a long time.

    • @ecaeas4439

Rivalries often build in silence tbh. As England, we have focused way too much on how many times Germany has ruined tournament hopes for us, and I think for a lot of people, that fixture takes more meaning on that it really deserves to.
Most of the time historically, Germany has had better national teams. That doesn't always mean they had better quality players (although most of the time they did), but there's nothing you can really do about that. England have let that Rivalry define expectations for tournaments into a really narrow window, and often lost sight of the need to just do well, no matter who we were faced with. Every time you play Germany is a chance to beat them, and it's entirely different each time.

This game means nothing, compared to what it "used" to mean.
I remember the 50's, through to 1984, when the Home Nations Competition was alive and kicking (I still miss it) and we did have some fiery affairs and to beat each other, especially England vs Scotland, meant everything.
But that was back in the day when Scotland actually had a Squad worth talking about, especially in the 70's.
Sorry Scotland, but now there is not one playing that one could describe as "World Class", where as back in the day, the Scottish Squad was littered with them.
Now, for England to beat Scotland, even with the Squad as weak as it is, thanks' to Southgate, is no big deal and to beat England means more to the Scottish Supporters, than it does to most Englishmen.
Ireland and Wales too, had some brilliant Players back in the day, sadly not so much now.

When was the last time England beat France, Belgium, Brazil, Argentina, Croatia, Italy, etc. in a Competition.
