Mbappe may have scored a hat-trick, but Messi and the Argentines were the ones to lift the 2022 World Cup after a thrilling 3-3 Final with penalties.
But how did Lionel Scaloni do it? Where did France falter?

I thought the point of Argentina's lop-sided shape was they could always play out left to di Maria and so they were never launching attacks down the right side, meaning they never turned the ball over on that side of the pitch, allowing Mbappe to counter.
By only advancing possession down their left, they could not be countered quickly down the right.
And Kounde staying tight and not being a threat going forward made this possible. Dembele had to get back to defend because Kounde couldn't get out there.
    Scaloni gave Deschamps a masterclass

Further, given the French team's lack of creative midfield- they weren't technically adept enough to switch passes into an already crowded French left wing.

@@jayavardhanjosyula6509 It's more about the difference in intensity in midfield. France midfield three could not compete with the speed and pressing of Argentina midfield at all. De paul and Enzo work rate were unreal. Fast press, precise tackles, quick ball lay off and transitions.

I would say that there was a lot of attacking traffic orchestrated by Messi down Argentina's right, but these attacks were feints not intended to be completed but intended to suppress the attacking threat of Mbappe and Hernandez. Ultimately in these play sequences, Argentina would switch play from right to the left for Di Maria to exploit the space created by drawing the french to the right.

    • @moooos2836
      @moooos2836 Pƙed rokem +33

@@JA-pn4ji Agreed, Messi was never the main outlet in the match. He was crucial in attracting pressures and unlocking the press, creating spaces on Di Maria then switch plays. Can also be seen in Molina rarely storming upfield to the byline. The key is Alvarez's movement attracting France defensive line.

In the last minutes of the game when it was 3-3 and about to go for a tie breaker shootout, Argentina was bringing in Dybala, Paredes and L. Martinez meanwhile France had taken out all of their experienced penalty takers from the game leaving behind the young players. France was trying to end the game with the strength from the young players while Argentina brought in experienced penalty takes anticipating a penalty shootout. It was a big brain move by Argentina.

We saw with the England subs in the Euro 2021 final how tricky it is to bring in subs just for penalties. But as you said, this is exactly where the experience comes in. Dybala just shooting it central shows how pragmatic football can be. Paredes also smashed his penalty in, while Coman and Tchouameni overthought and shot terrible penalties. Players like Giroud and Griezmann would have made the difference. Huge credit to Scaloni for his initial setup. Totally outmanoeuvred France. Very brave too, it sometimes looked like a 2-2-6. As predicted, Di Maria was key.
France's depth is what saved them from getting shut out. As the ARG players grew tired towards the 70th min, FRA's top tier bench started taking over the match.
Tired legs, tired minds, mistakes started to happen, leading to the PK and France's second goal as well. Argentina doesn't have the bench to counter that, and Scaloni refrained from making substitutions until extra time, other than the (likely planned) Di Maria sub for Acuna.

Even the penalties were damn interesting. Messi's ballsy slow rolling shot into the goal. That felt like immediate mind games from the start...unless it was just a really bad penalty that luckily still went in.

    Interesting analysis.
Great job from Scaloni for setting the team right and having the right tactics, almost.
Having almost played a perfect game, Scaloni didn't make his subs early enough. By the 80th minute, Argentina was almost spent, u can see obviously Alvarez pressing drop significantly, De Paul was running on empty and by taking off Di Maria, the out ball for Argentina and the counter to Mbappe was off (I can understand that, Di Maria couldn't last the 90). This let France the space and chance.
The energy Argentina had just gone, with it maybe some of the concentration. France had waited for it to pounce.
After replacing fresh legs, Argentina regained some of its dominance. But too late, France had also regained their confidence and momentum.
At that point, I had really thought Lautaro Martinez is Higuain 2.0. Luckily it didn't.
Overall, I think this game was "exhilarating" is because Argentina let the game drift away. It was not the first time. Scalonetta has always start games brilliantly then suffered at the end. This is something Scaloni had to address I think. Had Scaloni refresh with subs earlier we might have a more straight forward final.

It was the fact that Scaloni (who deserves amazing praise and credit) didn't make any midfield substitutions when his players were clearly exhausted. De Paul started looking like he couldn't run after 65 minutes and he wasn't subbed off until what, 100+? Mac Allister was fantastic too, but was also clearly tiring out. It made France be able to bypass the midfield far too many times. The only thing I questioned was whether he should have made some subs earlier, Argentina were starting to look quite tired after the 70th minute and were really struggling to hold on to the ball and lost control of the midfield. After that, France was able to get past the midfield quite easily and the Argentina backline was in trouble. Maybe someone like Paredes could have helped a bit earlier -- he came on and started winning duels, which helped Argentina gain some control again.

I think also the difference in player quality between the 2 squads made it harder to see out the game for Argentina. I mean, when Alvarez was a press monster for 80 minutes, and now he cannot run anymore, you kept him on the pitch being quite unproductive until you put lautaro on who is completely different. Plus, Messi doesnt contribute that much defensively. Plus, Acuña has a great work rate but does not offer the attacking or counterattacking threat that Di Maria offers. So you end up losing everything that you needed to stay "in the game". Still, france had like 2 shots on goal until the ET.

Analyze the Penalty Kicks also, what goes into penalty kicks, stats and strategy.

Scaloni was magnificent. I think few expected Di Maria to play LW and cause confusion in the French backline.
Scaloni was tactically impeccable... until he subbed Di Maria and retained the shape vs France 424. Should have brought Lisandro for Di Maria and replace Tagliafico for Acuna. Play 532 with Lisandro being a pseudo sweeper. The 6 men in the middle would have cut the serpent's head as France had zero midfield.
But it wouldn't have made for a thrilling finale. So.. there's that. haha

Any idea where you get the prints in the back from? Would love to have a few at my place

To my amateur eyes, the game turned against Argentina as soon as Di Maria came off
